Henkel’s Smartwash concept aims to add sensing and automatic detergent dosing to existing washing machines and dishwashers, using accessories rather than replacing the appliance. That could make laundry and dish care easier, but it is not the same as giving every older machine Wi-Fi, remote controls, diagnostics, or new cycle options. Henkel has described the technology and its intended capabilities; broad availability, pricing, compatibility, and independently verified performance remain unclear.
What Henkel means by “smart”
Smartwash is best understood as a proposed smart dosing and consumables platform. Its hardware and software are intended to help assess washing conditions and dispense detergent—and, for dishwashers, potentially other products—at suitable times and quantities. Optional app features may add controls or notifications, but the public descriptions do not establish that the accessories can take over the electronics of any conventional appliance.
Henkel has described Smartwash as an AI-driven, cartridge-based system for new and existing washing machines and dishwashers. In a March 2025 earnings-call transcript, the company said it was targeting Europe from 2025. That was a target, not proof of a broad retail launch or universal compatibility. Henkel’s FY2024 earnings-call transcript outlines the broader concept.

Persil Smartwash: a wash-ball concept
CES 2025 coverage described a reusable ball that goes inside the washing-machine drum. It is intended to assess factors such as load soiling and water hardness, then help determine how much detergent to use. The early description focused on universal detergent, with additional detergent types planned later. The idea is to put the sensing and dosing layer in an accessory rather than require sensors or a detergent reservoir built into the washer. CES reporting on the concepts describes the wash ball and its proposed function.

That description is not evidence of independently tested cleaning results or a confirmed fit for every drum and laundry load. Delicate items, specialty detergents, mixed loads, and unusual machine designs are all compatibility questions that require product-specific guidance.
Somat Smartwash: a dishwasher dosing device
The dishwasher concept was described as a flat, plate-like device placed in the lower rack area. It is intended to manage detergent, dishwasher salt, and rinse aid, dispensing products during a cycle rather than relying only on a tablet placed in the normal detergent compartment.
That form factor raises practical questions: will it fit without obstructing dishes, spray arms, or filters? Which dishwasher models and cycle types can it support? Can it dose products other than Somat? Henkel previously described a related Somat smart-dosing idea with a plate-sized device and three compartments, app controls, personalized modes, and refill notifications. Henkel’s broader Smartwash proposal uses detergent cartridges in a dedicated compartment. The company has described a system able to use up to three detergents and select dosing based on conditions such as soiling and water hardness. It may also select or recommend an appropriate wash program. The cartridge platform is related to, but should not be casually conflated with, the specific wash-ball and dishwasher-device concepts shown in CES coverage: public descriptions do not establish that every feature belongs to one finished consumer product.

Does it truly upgrade an old appliance?
Henkel says the system is intended for existing as well as new machines. “Existing” does not mean every old model will work, or that an accessory will control all of its functions. Compatibility has several distinct parts:
- Physical fit: A wash ball must be suitable for the drum and load; a dishwasher device must fit without interfering with loading or water circulation.
- Product compatibility: The supported detergent formulations and cartridge types need to match what the system can dispense. Specialty laundry products may not be supported.
- Cycle interaction: It is not clear from public descriptions whether the system merely doses products, recommends a program, or can communicate with and change appliance settings.
- Connectivity: App functions may depend on a phone, account, network, or specific machine setup. The available material does not fully explain what works offline.
- Regional support: Appliance models, detergent formulations, refills, and availability can vary by country.
CES reporting said the concept was intended to work through an app or in an analog manner, so phone operation would not necessarily be mandatory. But the division between app-free basic dosing and app-dependent setup, calibration, notifications, or advanced features has not been fully established.
There is no verified basis in the cited descriptions to promise universal remote start, pause, cycle monitoring, temperature or spin changes, machine-health diagnostics, leak detection, or firmware updates. Until Henkel publishes supported models and detailed operating instructions, Smartwash is more accurately described as a dosing accessory than a universal retrofit computer.

Henkel calls Smartwash AI-driven. The public information does not disclose enough to assess the technical implementation: it does not specify the complete sensor suite, models, training data, or how much of the decision-making is machine learning versus programmed dosing logic. The grounded claim is that Henkel proposes using sensed or supplied information and detergent know-how to guide dosing and possibly program choice—not that the device has been shown to recognize fabric types or make decisions like a human.

Could it reduce waste?
More appropriate dosing could plausibly avoid detergent overdosing, and automated handling of dishwasher products could be convenient. Henkel presents Smartwash as a way to improve resource efficiency. But a sustainability benefit is not established simply by adding automation: it depends on dosing accuracy, the device’s useful life, cartridge packaging and transport, electronics and battery disposal, refill availability, and how people use the recommended cycles.
Henkel also points to dishwasher program selection and low-temperature eco cycles as relevant to environmental impact, but that broader context does not demonstrate a specific Smartwash saving. No verified percentage reduction in detergent, water, or energy use is established by the cited material. A meaningful comparison would need independent testing and a life-cycle view of both the accessory and its consumables. Henkel’s March 2025 earnings discussion identified Europe as an initial target from 2025, but that statement does not establish a current product launch, widespread stock, or availability in the United States. - Which washer and dishwasher models and configurations are supported?
- What are the device price, refill price, and cost per cycle?
- Are cartridges proprietary, and are generic detergents supported?
- Does basic dosing work without an account, phone, or internet connection?
- Can a user override a recommendation, and what happens if the accessory or network fails?
- What are the warranty, cleaning, replacement, privacy, and end-of-life arrangements?
- Has independent testing measured dosing accuracy, cleaning performance, or resource savings?
Who might find the idea useful?
If it reaches market with clear compatibility and reasonable refill costs, Smartwash could interest households that frequently over- or under-dose detergent, want help managing several dishwasher products, or prefer an accessory to replacing an appliance. It may be less appealing to people who already measure carefully, rely on specialty detergents, avoid connected products, or prioritize generic consumables and repairability.
Compared with pods or manual measuring, the proposed advantage is adaptive dosing rather than a fixed dose. Compared with a washer or dishwasher that has built-in automatic dispensing and connected controls, the potential advantage is adding a dosing layer without buying a new appliance. The trade-off is that a retrofit accessory may offer much less direct control of the machine itself—and may introduce proprietary refills, electronics, and another component to maintain.
Bottom line
Henkel’s idea is plausible and potentially useful, but “makes dumb machines smart” is broader than the evidence supports. Smartwash is a proposed way to add sensing and automated dosing to ordinary appliances, with optional connectivity. Whether it is a worthwhile retrofit depends on model compatibility, actual retail availability, refill economics, offline operation, and independent performance results—details that the cited public material does not settle.
