Grow a spider plant (Chlorophytum comosum) in medium to bright indirect light, in a pot with drainage, and water when its potting mix has dried somewhat. That flexible routine suits this adaptable indoor perennial better than a fixed weekly schedule. Brown tips can have several causes, while trailing plantlets make propagation straightforward.
What a spider plant needs
Spider plant, Chlorophytum comosum, is an herbaceous perennial in the Asparagaceae family. It is widely grown indoors and produces trailing stems bearing small plantlets. For a healthy plant, focus on light, drainage, and soil moisture rather than a rigid calendar.
- Light: Medium to bright indirect light is a reliable target. The plant can adapt to lower light, but that is tolerance, not its preferred growing condition. Wisconsin Horticulture describes medium to bright light as suitable; Illinois Extension says bright light is preferred and medium light tolerated. NC State Extension notes it can tolerate deep shade.
- Pot and mix: Use a pot with drainage holes and a well-drained indoor potting medium. Do not let the roots sit in standing water.
- Water: Allow the potting mix to dry somewhat between waterings. Then water thoroughly and let excess drain away. The plant prefers moist soil but can tolerate some dryness, so check the mix instead of relying on a universal number of days.
How to water a spider plant
- Check the potting mix before watering. If it is still damp, wait; if it has dried somewhat, water.
- Water the mix thoroughly rather than giving the plant only a small splash.
- Let excess water escape through the drainage holes, and empty any water left in the saucer or outer pot.
How quickly the mix dries varies with the indoor conditions and container, which is why a set weekly interval is not a dependable rule. Illinois Extension specifically advises letting soil dry between waterings; NC State describes spider plant as preferring moist soil while tolerating drought and dry soil.
Why spider plant leaves get brown tips
Brown tips are a symptom with multiple possible causes, not proof of one particular problem. Extension sources identify low humidity, excessively dry soil, accumulated soluble salts or excess fertilizer, and chemicals such as fluoride or chlorine in tap water as possibilities. Check recent care before changing several things at once.

- Review moisture: If the potting mix is staying very dry, adjust your watering routine so you water thoroughly after it has dried somewhat.
- Review fertilizer and salts: Excess fertilizer or soluble salts can contribute to tip browning. Consider whether fertilizer has been applied heavily or frequently.
- Consider the water source: Fluoride or chlorine in tap water is among the causes listed by Wisconsin Extension. If you suspect your water, compare the plant’s response when using a different suitable water source.
- Consider humidity: Low humidity is another possible factor, though it is not the only explanation.
Wisconsin Extension and Clemson Cooperative Extension both identify dry soil, low humidity, and salt-related causes; Wisconsin also lists fluoride or chlorine in tap water. How to propagate spider plant plantlets
Spider plants form small plantlets along trailing stems. Once a plantlet has begun developing roots, it can be separated from the parent and planted in suitable, well-drained potting medium.

- Choose a plantlet on a trailing stem that has started to develop roots.
- Separate it from the parent plantlet-bearing stem.
- Plant it in a pot with drainage and suitable potting medium.
- Water the medium and continue the same basic care: indirect light and watering when the mix has dried somewhat.

Are spider plants safe for cats and dogs?
The ASPCA’s current spider plant listing identifies Chlorophytum comosum as non-toxic to cats and dogs. ASPCA also included spider plant in a non-toxic plant list published April 30, 2026, in its plant-safety article.

That classification is not a promise that chewing any plant will leave an animal symptom-free. An ASPCA article dated February 27, 2019, said small ingestions of spider plant may cause mild gastrointestinal irritation.
