Google has rebuilt its smart-home experience around Gemini for Home, but this is a staged migration rather than a universal switch. On a home that is upgraded, compatible Nest speakers and displays use Gemini for Home instead of Google Assistant. The redesigned app adds natural-language controls, AI camera tools and assisted automation creation. Availability still depends on country, language, account, device, firmware, subscription and Google’s rollout status. Most importantly, Google says a home cannot currently be switched back to Google Assistant after the upgrade.
What Google actually changed
Google announced Gemini for Home on October 1, 2025, as a platform change spanning the Google Home app, voice assistant, cameras, doorbells and automations. The mobile app is not merely receiving a new chatbot screen.
- App redesign: Google says the unified home view loads camera tiles faster, makes camera-history scrolling smoother, broadens Nest Protect support and brings device controls and activity into a more consistent layout. Google claims camera-history scrolling can reach a frame rate more than six times higher than before; that is Google’s product claim, not an independent test. See Google’s app announcement.
- New home assistant: Gemini for Home voice assistant takes over from Google Assistant on compatible devices after a home is upgraded.
- AI around cameras: Supported Nest cameras and doorbells can add generated event descriptions, smarter notifications, activity summaries and natural-language video search.
- Assisted automations: Help me create can turn a plain-language request into an editable automation rather than requiring every field to be configured manually.

What Gemini for Home can do
Core voice features without a subscription
Google lists natural-language smart-home control, media search and playback, alarms and timers, calendars, notes, lists, reminders, general questions, Continued Conversation and more flexible device targeting among the basic voice-assistant functions. Availability varies by device, country and language; consult Google’s live feature table at Google Home Help.

Ask Home and Home Brief
Ask Home provides conversational access to information such as home status, activity and automations. Home Brief summarizes relevant activity. Their exact behavior and plan requirements vary, so they should be treated as account-level features rather than guaranteed capabilities on every installation.
Help me create
Describe the result you want—such as turning lights on at sunset when someone is home—and Gemini can generate a draft automation. You must inspect the proposed starters, conditions and actions and then save it. Unsupported device types or automation components can prevent generation or saving.
Gemini Live
Gemini Live enables a back-and-forth conversation. It is not available on every supported speaker and display and may depend on the Google Home Premium plan.
Camera intelligence
On eligible cameras with the required plan, Gemini can describe events, send AI-generated notifications, summarize activity and search recorded video using natural language. These are interpretations of recorded footage, not security-grade evidence; descriptions can be incomplete or wrong.

Google Home Premium is the successor to the Nest Aware branding for these whole-home features. Google says Google AI Pro and Google AI Ultra memberships can include Home Premium benefits, with AI Ultra including Advanced benefits where available. Benefit availability varies by market; Google’s explanation is at Google Home Premium benefits. Current standalone dollar pricing is not stated here because it changes by market and was not verified from an official checkout page.

“Supports Gemini for Home” therefore does not mean that every device supports every Gemini feature. Google’s compatibility details are in the voice-assistant requirements guide.
Minimum software versions
- Google Home app 4.1 or newer for the voice-assistant upgrade
- Cast speaker firmware 3.76 or newer
- Fuchsia display firmware 28 or newer
Later features can require newer app releases; Google’s 2026 notes mention versions 4.12 and 4.18 for particular expansions. Check the release notes instead of treating 4.1 as a universal requirement.
Cameras and doorbells
Google says camera features are rolling out to Google Home Premium Advanced subscribers and are restricted to adult home administrators. Eligible categories include Nest cameras set up in the Google Home app from 2021 onward and legacy Nest cameras transferred into that app. This does not mean every third-party “Works with Google Home” camera receives Gemini camera intelligence; older partner integrations may offer little more than live view. How to request and complete the upgrade
Request early access
- Update the Google Home app.
- Open Google Home and tap your profile picture or initial in the upper-right corner.
- Choose Home settings.
- Tap Early Access.
- Confirm Google Groups settings if Google asks for them.
- Wait for an in-app invitation or upgrade prompt.
Finish the upgrade after an invitation
- Open the notification or banner such as Introducing Gemini for Home.
- Tap Get started.
- Read and acknowledge Google’s disclosures.
- Set voice-assistant and response-filter options.
- Install any requested device or Android speech-service updates.
Early Access is separate from the Google Home app Public Preview. Joining one does not automatically enroll you in the other.
The irreversible-switch warning
After a home is upgraded, Google’s current help documentation says it cannot be switched back to Google Assistant. The change applies to everyone in that home and to compatible devices added later. Before accepting, check assistant settings to see whether the home identifies its assistant as Google Assistant or Gemini for Home voice assistant. Availability is not uniform
As of the August 16, 2026 availability snapshot, Google listed early-access markets including Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and the United States. Features and languages differ within those markets, and Google continues to expand the rollout. The live country and feature list is at Google Home Help.

Gemini may process information about devices, home status, camera events, routines and requests to provide these functions. Google says it does not use users’ personal data from Google Home to train generative AI models outside Google Home. That is Google’s stated policy, not a guarantee that the system will never make a privacy or interpretation mistake.
- Review every generated automation before saving it, especially one involving locks, alarms, heating or other safety-relevant equipment.
- Treat camera descriptions, notifications and searches as convenience features. They depend on recorded footage, camera setup, subscription, region, language and AI interpretation.
- Expect behavior differences when older speakers or third-party devices lack support for a particular feature.
Should you opt in now?
Opt in if
- You want conversational control instead of rigid commands.
- You have supported Nest cameras and specifically want searchable history or richer event descriptions.
- You already pay for Google Home Premium or Google AI Pro/Ultra.
- You want to draft routines in natural language and are willing to review them.
- You own compatible older Google speakers and do not need Gemini Live on every device.
Wait if
- You rely on a particular Google Assistant behavior or complex routine.
- You are not comfortable with an effectively irreversible home-level switch.
- Your household depends on unsupported third-party hardware or restricted accounts.
- You do not want the Advanced plan required for camera AI.
- You need consistently predictable automation behavior while supported starters, conditions and actions continue to change.
Common problems and practical checks
No Early Access option
Check the latest app version, country and Google Groups enrollment. The account or home may not qualify, and Workspace restrictions can apply.
The app is current but Gemini is missing
Installation is not the same as activation. Google is rolling out features separately and may not have enabled your home yet.

Only some devices respond to Gemini features
Compare each device with Google’s compatibility list. Older and third-party speakers may omit Gemini Live, while camera tools have a narrower supported list.
An automation cannot be generated or saved
The requested starter, condition, action or device type may not be supported. Simplify the request, then edit and test the resulting draft manually.
Camera search misses an event
Verify that footage was recorded and that the camera, subscription, language and region qualify. An AI summary should not be treated as complete evidence.
Do you need new hardware?
Usually not for the basic voice assistant. Compatible existing speakers and displays can receive the software upgrade when Google enables the home. A new Google Home Speaker (2026) may make sense if you specifically want a newer first-party device, but buying hardware does not guarantee immediate invitation or regional availability. New cameras are relevant only when their setup, region and Google Home Premium Advanced eligibility match your goal.
