Google’s “No Device Left Behind” Gemini Promise: Which Older Nest Devices Get It?

Yes—many older Google Home and Nest speakers and displays are eligible for Gemini for Home, but “no device left behind” does not mean every device gets every feature. As of August 16, 2026, Google’s compatibility list includes products dating back to the original Google Home and first-generation Google Home Mini. Basic voice-assistant features are free, while Gemini Live and advanced camera features have additional device, plan, region, language, and rollout requirements. Most importantly, Google says a household cannot switch back to Google Assistant after upgrading.

What Google promised—and what it means

On October 1, 2025, Google announced that Gemini for Home would reach every Google speaker, smart display, camera, and doorbell it had made during the previous decade. The announcement describes a broader platform change, not just a new wake-word response: Google is updating the voice assistant, Google Home app, camera features, and ways to create automations.

The practical promise is that many existing devices can gain a meaningful Gemini-era experience without being replaced. It is not a promise of equal performance or identical features on every model. Google’s compatibility table distinguishes devices that support the full voice-assistant experience from older products that support “most” features but not Gemini Live. Camera features have their own eligibility rules.

Google’s announcement is therefore good news for owners of working older hardware—but it should not be read as “every Gemini feature works on every Google Home device.”

Which older Google speakers and displays are compatible?

Google’s current compatibility documentation, checked August 16, 2026, lists the following devices. Firmware, rollout, subscription, region, and language can still affect what appears on a particular device or account.

Google’s official list is for speakers and displays. Its wider 2025 announcement also referred to cameras and doorbells, but camera eligibility is separate: owning a compatible speaker does not make every Nest camera eligible for every Gemini camera feature.

What can you do without a subscription?

Google says the basic Gemini for Home voice assistant is available at no cost on compatible devices. Its included functions cover smart-home controls, media search and playback, alarms and timers, calendars, notes, lists, reminders, general questions and answers, and Continued Conversation.

That can make requests less dependent on exact command wording. For example, you might ask, “Turn off all the lights except the kitchen,” “Add laundry detergent to my shopping list,” or “Play something calm for dinner.” Google says Gemini is intended to handle more natural and nuanced device-control requests than the former Assistant. For important actions, however, check the device state rather than treating a spoken response as proof that the action succeeded.

There are also Gemini features in the Google Home app. Ask Home can help control devices, check home status, search home activity where supported, and create automations. Google describes basic quick searches and simple device queries as available without a subscription; some more advanced Ask Home capabilities require Google Home Premium.

What requires Google Home Premium?

Google Home Premium is the name Google gave to the second-generation Nest Aware subscription on October 1, 2025. Depending on plan, device, country, and feature availability, it can add longer event-video history, continuous video history, familiar-face detection, Gemini Live, camera-history search, AI notifications, Home Brief, and automation or home-insight features such as Help me create.

Google’s launch announcement said Premium plans would start at $10 per month. That was the launch pricing statement, not a guarantee that every current plan or country has the same price. Check the plan and price shown in your Google Home account before subscribing. Google also says Google AI Pro includes Home Premium Standard and Google AI Ultra includes Home Premium Advanced, subject to account and availability requirements; those bundles are most relevant if you already want their other benefits.

Basic Gemini for Home voice-assistant features are not the same as paid camera intelligence or Live conversations. If you cancel Premium, Google says you retain basic Gemini for Home features but lose the subscription-dependent capabilities.

Gemini Live on older devices: check before assuming

There is a mismatch in current information about Gemini Live on some first-generation devices. Google’s official compatibility table says several older products—including the original Google Home, Home Max, Nest Wifi points, and third-party speakers—support most Gemini for Home features but not Gemini Live. A July 2026 report said Live had begun rolling out to the first-generation Google Home Mini and first-generation Nest Hub.

Treat that report as a possible newer, gradual early-access rollout, not proof that Live is available on every first-generation unit. Check the current Google Home app and Google’s device-specific support entry for your account and model. A missing Live option does not by itself mean that the device cannot receive basic Gemini for Home features.

Cameras and doorbells have stricter requirements

Gemini camera features include AI-generated descriptions and notifications, Home Brief summaries, and natural-language searches through camera history. These are not simply part of the free speaker upgrade. Google says they require Google Home Premium Advanced and a supported camera. Eligible setups include supported Nest cameras set up in the Google Home app and legacy Nest cameras transferred to that app.

Availability also depends on country and language, and some features require the user to be an adult household administrator. If a camera feature is missing, check the model, app setup or migration status, plan, account role, and regional availability before replacing hardware.

Firmware, rollout, and household requirements

• Speakers: Google lists Cast firmware version 3.76 or higher as the minimum.
• Displays: Google lists Fuchsia firmware version 28 or higher as the minimum.
• App: Keep Google Home updated through your app store. Google’s launch instructions cited version 4.0 or later for early-access enrollment, and Live instructions cited 4.1 or later; these version numbers can change.
• Rollout: A supported model may still be waiting for an account invitation, regional availability, language support, or a staged rollout. Eligibility does not guarantee immediate access.
• Household: Once the home is upgraded, Google says Gemini for Home becomes available to everyone in that Google Home household. Compatible devices added later use Gemini for Home automatically.
• Connection: This is an account- and service-based experience, not an offline assistant running locally on old hardware. It depends on Google services, an internet connection, and supported account and country conditions.

Important: the switch may be one-way

Do not treat the migration as a harmless toggle. Google’s current documentation says that after a household switches from Google Assistant to Gemini for Home, it cannot switch back to Google Assistant. Review the setup disclosures and consider whether your household is comfortable with the new assistant before accepting the upgrade.

That matters most if you depend on predictable behavior, a feature not yet documented for your device, or routines that are important for security or comfort. Gemini may understand flexible requests better, but natural-language systems can respond less deterministically than fixed commands. Test routines after the change, and verify locks, alarms, security systems, heating and cooling, and safety-related actions in the Google Home app.

How to join early access and set up Gemini

1. Update the Google Home app.
2. Open Google Home, tap your profile picture or initials in the upper-right corner, then go to Home settings → Early access.
3. Join the program and wait for Google’s notification. Google advises checking that your Google Groups setting allows you to be added to groups.
4. When the “Introducing Gemini for Home” notification appears, open it and tap Get started.
5. Review the disclosures, configure assistant and response-filtering settings, and complete setup. If you dismissed the notification, look for a setup banner in Home settings.

On Android, Google says you may also need to update Speech Recognition and Synthesis. For a supported Live conversation, Google’s documented prompt is “Hey Google, let’s chat.” Live supports follow-up questions, interruptions, topic changes, and pauses. Actions are not supported inside the Live conversation; say “Hey Google” again to issue a smart-home command.

If Gemini does not appear

Check the likely causes in this order:

1. Confirm the exact device model against Google’s compatibility list.
2. Check that a speaker has Cast firmware 3.76 or later, or a display has Fuchsia firmware 28 or later.
3. Update the Google Home app.
4. Check country, language, and any feature-specific plan requirement.
5. Confirm the device belongs to the intended Google Home household and that the household has received or joined the relevant rollout.
6. If you are seeking camera intelligence, verify that the camera is supported and configured in Google Home; transfer an eligible legacy camera if required.

Google describes access as a gradual rollout, so not seeing Gemini immediately is not proof that a listed device is incompatible. If a third-party product is involved, also confirm that it is linked as a supported Google Home service: in the app, check Add → Link apps or services → Works with Google.

Should you opt in—or buy new hardware?

• Consider opting in if you want more flexible voice requests, already use Google Home, and accept the cloud-based service and one-way migration.
• Wait if your household depends on exact Assistant behavior, needs an undocumented feature, or is not comfortable losing the option to switch back.
• Camera owners: confirm the camera, app migration, Premium tier, administrator status, country, and language before subscribing or buying a replacement.
• Owners of working older speakers: do not replace them just to get basic Gemini voice controls; Google’s compatibility promise includes many older first-party devices.
• Consider newer hardware if you want the clearest support path or better microphones, display capability, processing, or audio. The 2026 Google Home Speaker is built specifically for Gemini, but new hardware does not remove plan or regional restrictions on advanced features.

For readers who prioritize local control and vendor independence, Home Assistant is a separate platform worth considering, but it is not a drop-in Gemini equivalent: setup and ongoing maintenance are more involved, and its hardware support and experience differ from Google’s integrated speakers, displays, media, and camera services.
