As of August 18, 2026, the Google Store lists the Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen) for $239.99, down from $279.99—a $40 discount, or about 14%. It may help reduce heating and cooling use through schedules, occupancy-based settings and room-temperature sensing, but it cannot guarantee a particular bill reduction. For a construction-minded buyer, the key checks are HVAC compatibility, wiring and installation cost, plus any local utility rebate.
The deal: $239.99, with a room sensor included
The U.S. Google Store price checked on August 18, 2026, is $239.99 instead of $279.99. That is $40 off, roughly 14%. Google’s page also shows financing of $20 per month for 12 months. Taxes and any installation charges can change the final cost; check the checkout page for shipping, return terms and the offer applicable to your chosen finish. The listed price is a dated snapshot, not a promise that the promotion will continue.
The box includes the thermostat display and base, trim and steel plates, mounting screws, wiring labels and one Nest Temperature Sensor (2nd gen). That sensor can help prioritize a bedroom, office or other room that runs warmer or cooler than the hallway where the thermostat is mounted. One thermostat can support up to six additional Nest Temperature Sensors, according to Google’s product information.

A smart thermostat saves energy only when its controls change how the HVAC system runs. It does not make a furnace, heat pump, air conditioner, ducts, windows or insulation more efficient. The 4th-gen Nest offers several ways to adjust operation:

- Smart Schedule: Learns temperature preferences and routine changes, then suggests or applies schedule adjustments. The value is greatest if it replaces a manual setting or a schedule that is rarely used consistently.
- Adaptive Eco and presence-based adjustments: Can move to energy-saving temperatures when the home is empty and aim to restore comfort before people return. Larger temperature setbacks may save more, but are not right for every household.
- Natural heating and cooling: Can use outdoor conditions to avoid unnecessary HVAC operation when conditions can help maintain comfort.
- Seasonal Savings: Can make temporary adjustments during periods of high heating or cooling demand. Google says users can review and accept or reject suggested adjustments.
- Energy feedback and Nest Renew: The Google Home app can provide energy information and suggestions. Nest Renew is a free service intended to help shift energy use toward cleaner or cheaper periods where available; availability and local utility arrangements matter.
These features work best when occupants let the schedule and setbacks operate. Frequent manual overrides, a continuously occupied home, or a preference for a tightly fixed temperature can limit the energy benefit.
What the savings claims do—and do not—tell you
Google markets the thermostat as capable of saving up to 31% on heating and cooling bills. Treat that as a maximum company claim, not a forecast for your house. Google’s energy-savings guidance says results depend on use and factors such as weather, insulation, pets, occupancy and chosen Eco temperatures. The support page also cites an average 10% winter heating-bill reduction in a U.K. study of Seasonal Savings. That result is not a universal U.S. estimate, and it should not be applied directly to an individual home.
Your starting point matters. Someone replacing a manual thermostat and adopting sensible setbacks may have more opportunity to reduce runtime than someone upgrading from a well-programmed smart thermostat. Climate, HVAC efficiency, air leakage, energy prices, household routines and occupants’ willingness to accept schedule changes all affect the outcome. If water heating, appliances or other loads account for much of a bill, a thermostat will have a smaller effect on the total.

Use a conservative payback calculation rather than the 31% figure: net cost ÷ realistic annual savings = approximate years to pay back. For illustration only, a $239.99 purchase with $50 in annual savings takes about 4.8 years to recover its price; at $100 a year, about 2.4 years. Subtract only a rebate you have confirmed, and add any wiring, accessory or professional labor cost. These examples are arithmetic, not measured predictions of Nest performance.
Check your HVAC system before buying
Google says this model works with most 24-volt systems, including many gas, electric and oil systems; forced-air, heat-pump and radiant systems; and multistage heating or cooling. Certain humidifier, dehumidifier and ventilation configurations may also be supported. “Most” is not “all”: use Google’s compatibility checker with your actual system and wiring before ordering.
Take a clear photo of the existing thermostat terminals and labels before disconnecting anything. Pay particular attention to heat-pump auxiliary or emergency heat, multiple zones, accessory wiring, proprietary controls and communicating HVAC equipment. A standard-looking wall thermostat does not prove that the equipment behind it is compatible.

Does it need a C wire?
The 4th-gen model uses Google’s Power Sharing approach and is designed to work without a common wire in most homes. Google lists a C wire or Nest Power Connector as necessary in limited cases—less than 1% on its specifications page. That is not a guarantee that every no-C-wire installation will work reliably. Heat pumps, zones and connected accessories can make power requirements more complicated. Consult the Google C-wire guidance and compatibility checker; symptoms such as power warnings, disconnections or cycling call for troubleshooting rather than assuming the setup is fine.
Installation, app and ownership costs
Google provides setup steps through the Google Home app and describes the thermostat as self-installable. Setup requires Google Home. The thermostat is Matter-certified, which can enable control from compatible Matter smart-home platforms, but Matter does not guarantee that every Google-specific feature will appear in every third-party app. Buyers should not assume that every legacy Nest feature is available in the old Nest app.
DIY installation is most reasonable when the system passes the compatibility check, wiring is clearly labeled and the installer is comfortable shutting off HVAC power and handling low-voltage wiring. Consider a qualified HVAC professional if you have a multi-zone system, heat pump with auxiliary or emergency heat, humidifier/dehumidifier/ventilation connections, unusual boiler or radiant controls, unclear wiring, or recurring power problems. A C-wire run or other wiring work can erase the $40 discount; Google offers an installation route through its product page, but local labor pricing varies.

Google lists a two-year retail warranty and a five-year standard warranty for HVAC professionals on the specifications page. Confirm the warranty terms that apply to your purchase and installation.

Eligibility and amounts can depend on ZIP code, utility, income, equipment and remaining program funds. Some offers require preapproval or purchase from an approved retailer, and a rebate may not combine with a store promotion. Verify the rules before buying, rather than subtracting a possible rebate from your budget as if it were guaranteed.

Who should buy it at this price?
- Good candidate: You have a compatible system and a manual or inconsistently programmed thermostat; your schedule varies or the home is regularly empty; or a room sensor could address a real comfort imbalance.
- More compelling with a rebate: Your utility confirms an eligible rebate and the purchase, retailer and timing meet its requirements.
- Compare first: You already own a well-configured smart thermostat, seldom change temperatures, or mainly want the cheapest way to control a straightforward HVAC system. A premium learning model may add little value for you.
- Pause for an installation quote: Your system needs wiring work, has zones or accessories, or is a heat pump with complex controls. The thermostat may still fit, but labor and power requirements belong in the total cost.
- Check permission: Renters should get approval before replacing a thermostat and confirm who is responsible for restoring the original device.
If you are comparing ecosystems, the ecobee Smart Thermostat Premium is a credible alternative to evaluate for its own room-sensor and platform priorities; Resideo’s Honeywell Home thermostat range offers models for different system needs. Compare compatibility, included sensors, app features and verified total price rather than assuming one brand suits every HVAC installation.
Bottom line: At the dated Google Store price of $239.99, the 4th-gen Nest is a more attractive purchase for a compatible home that can use its automation and included room sensor. Check system compatibility, rebate rules and installation cost first. Buy for the combination of control, comfort and possible energy savings—not on the expectation that a thermostat alone will deliver Google’s maximum 31% claim.
