Google’s 2026 Gemini-for-Home hardware arrived in two stages: the company announced three wired 2K Nest security devices on April 29, then unveiled its $99.99 Google Home Speaker on June 17. The speaker reached stores June 25. The products are now part of Google’s current smart-home lineup, but the headline AI features—especially detailed camera descriptions, searchable history and Gemini Live—depend on device compatibility, region and, in many cases, a paid Google Home Premium plan.
Four devices, announced on two dates
The April announcement covered two cameras and a doorbell: Nest Cam Outdoor (wired, 2nd gen), Nest Cam Indoor (wired, 3rd gen), and Nest Doorbell (wired, 3rd gen). Google positioned all three around 2K video and Gemini for Home.
The separate Google Home Speaker announcement followed on June 17. Google listed its US price at $99.99, with store availability beginning June 25. Google calls it the first audio device built for Gemini for Home.

Those camera models are wired, not battery-powered replacements for every earlier Nest camera. That makes power access a practical buying constraint: the outdoor camera needs a suitable permanent power location, and the doorbell assumes compatible wiring. Google’s lineup includes other camera products, so check the specific model rather than assuming the new devices suit a wire-free installation.

What Gemini for Home is meant to add
Traditional camera alerts often say that motion occurred. Google says its new cameras can use Gemini for Home to describe events in greater detail, with basic event identification for people, animals and vehicles. With eligible features, users can search camera history and ask questions about what a camera captured. A compatible speaker can also answer questions about current or recent camera activity—for example, whether a gate appears open.
The speaker is intended to make voice interaction more conversational. Google highlights Gemini Live for natural back-and-forth conversation, help and brainstorming, along with requests that control multiple smart-home devices. It is not simply a renamed camera monitor, and Google says Gemini for Home operates independently of the Gemini mobile apps.

These are Google’s stated capabilities, not a guarantee that every description or answer will be correct. Treat AI-generated event summaries as a convenience, not definitive evidence of what happened; Google advises users to check responses for accuracy. Resolution alone also does not establish real-world image quality.

Which features cost extra?
Basic product functions and advanced Gemini features are not the same thing. Google’s current US store terms associate Google Home Premium with features including Gemini Live, complex automation creation, detailed camera-event descriptions and searchable video history. The applicable camera plan can also provide up to 10 days of 24/7 video history. Exact availability depends on the plan, device, country and language.

These are US prices reflected in Google Store terms in August 2026, not universal pricing or a promise that plan names and benefits will remain unchanged. A new speaker purchase may include six months of Standard for eligible new users when purchased through September 30, 2026. The offer excludes current subscribers and current free-trial users, requires device activation, and renews at the standard price unless canceled. Eligible new wired camera or doorbell purchases may include a one-month Premium trial; eligibility varies. Review the offer terms before purchase.
After a speaker trial ends, retaining Premium features requires a paid plan. Google says that without renewal the speaker’s assistant reverts to a more basic Gemini experience. That makes the ongoing plan cost part of the purchase decision, particularly if searchable footage or richer camera descriptions are the main reason to buy.

Do you need the new speaker if you already own Nest hardware?
Not necessarily. Google lists Gemini for Home support on the 2026 Google Home Speaker, Nest Hub (1st and 2nd gen), Nest Audio, Nest Mini (2nd gen), Nest Hub Max and first-generation Google Home Mini. Google says older supported devices receive most Gemini for Home features but not Gemini Live. Its documentation also places the Nest Wifi point, Google Home Max, original Google Home and third-party speakers in a more limited-support group.

Google’s stated minimums are Cast firmware 3.76 or later for speakers and Fuchsia firmware 28 or later for displays. Check Google’s compatibility documentation for the current device list and feature distinctions. If you already have a Nest Audio or supported Nest Hub, the new speaker is less compelling as a basic assistant upgrade; Gemini Live and the new hardware experience are its clearer differentiators.

The speaker can be useful without Google cameras: it is a smart speaker for voice interactions and home control in its own right. Camera integration is an additional reason to choose it, not a requirement for using it. Google also says up to two Google Home Speakers can pair with a Google TV Streamer for home-theater audio; see its speaker and display support page.
Who is this lineup for?
- Existing Google Home households: Consider the cameras if you want wired 2K devices and centralized Google Home control. First check whether your existing speakers already support the Gemini features you want.
- People who want richer camera search: Budget for Premium if searchable history and enhanced descriptions are central to the decision. Compare recurring plan costs with the value of those features.
- Renters or anyone without accessible power: The announced cameras and doorbell are wired. Look at other installation options rather than assuming these fit a battery-powered setup.
- Buyers who want an audio speaker: The $99.99 speaker may make sense for Gemini Live or conversational control. It is a less obvious upgrade if your current compatible Nest speaker already meets your needs.
- People avoiding subscriptions or cloud-dependent features: Do not buy on the assumption that every advanced AI or recording feature is included indefinitely with the hardware. Review current plan terms and service requirements first.
Availability and practical limits
Google’s terms require the Google Home app, Wi-Fi, internet access and a Google Account for relevant services. Gemini features are offered only in select countries and languages, and capabilities can vary by device and plan or change over time. The listed subscription prices and promotions above are US-specific; do not assume the same availability or terms elsewhere. The camera and speaker announcement establishes Google’s product positioning, not independent testing of image quality, microphone performance, response speed or AI accuracy.
