Google Nest’s Home/Away Assist (in the Nest app) and Presence sensing (in Google Home) are not instant GPS exit detectors. They combine phone location with activity from supported Nest and Google Home devices, and Google may wait around an hour after the last detected activity before switching to Away. Start by checking the recorded event; it will show whether the decision came from a phone, a device, or another household member.
1. Check the event Google actually recorded
Do this before changing settings or resetting devices.
Google Home
- Open Google Home.
- Tap Activity, then History.
- Filter for Presence sensing.
- Open the event that matches the incorrect Home or Away change.
The event can identify a phone-location change or activity from a specific Nest product. See Google’s troubleshooting guidance at Google Home Help.
Nest app
- Open Nest.
- Tap Settings → Home/Away Assist.
- Scroll to Activity history.
- Review the relevant event. Nest displays the last 10 days.
Interpret the result this way:
- No event: investigate app permissions, connectivity, account ownership, or the home address.
- Phone event: investigate location permission, geofence distance, signal, and expected delay.
- Device-activity event: investigate pets, heaters, cameras, Protect, thermostats, speakers, or displays.
- Home/Away changed correctly but an appliance did not: troubleshoot that appliance’s own automation setting.
2. If your phone never changes between Home and Away
Check the phone supplying location, not Google Account Location History. Google explicitly treats Location History and Home presence sensing as separate features.

- Turn on the phone’s system Location service.
- Give Google Home or Nest background location access—typically Always or Allow all the time, where your phone offers that option.
- Enable Wi-Fi and mobile data; turn off Airplane mode.
- Check that the phone has a usable cellular signal and is not in an extreme battery-saving mode that suspends background activity.
- After an operating-system or app update, recheck the permission because it may have changed.
Only one app can share a phone’s location for this purpose at a time. Enabling phone location in Google Home automatically stops location sharing from Nest, and vice versa. Make sure the app that manages your affected devices is the one receiving location.
3. Verify the home address and test the geofence properly
Check the home’s saved location in Google Home or Nest. A wrong address, duplicate household, or old home can leave a phone permanently Home or Away.
Do not test by walking to the next house. Google says a phone generally needs to be a meaningful distance from the home before the geofence changes. Weak Wi-Fi or cellular service can delay departure recognition, and Home can sometimes switch before you reach the door as Google prepares for arrival. This is geofencing behavior, not continuous GPS tracking; Google says it generally relies on geofencing and Wi-Fi rather than constantly following your exact position.
4. Check every resident and every participating phone
Presence sensing is household-wide. A routine that requires “everyone is away” can remain Home because another resident’s phone is still present—or because that person’s phone is not configured correctly.

- Invite each resident to the correct Google Home household with their own Google account.
- Have each person enable their own phone in Home settings → Presence sensing.
- Remove old phones, tablets, and duplicate household memberships that may still report location.
- Do not share one Google account’s credentials; Google recommends separate invited accounts.
Also check whether someone is physically home with a phone Google does not know about. That can make an “everyone away” condition unreliable.
5. Find device-based false positives
A phone can correctly report Away while a Nest device reports activity and keeps the home in Home mode. Pets and moving warm objects can trigger activity. A heater in a thermostat’s view is a known example.
Review the devices selected to help with Presence sensing. Temporarily use phone location only, or remove one suspected device at a time, then repeat the test. If a thermostat is reacting to a heater, move the heater out of its view or remove that thermostat from presence sensing. Do the same isolation test for cameras, doorbells, Nest Protect, speakers, and displays where those products are configured to contribute activity.

6. Match the symptom to the fix
Home switches to Home too early
This can be expected when Google detects an approaching phone connection. It can also be caused by a pet, warm moving object, or another device reporting activity. Confirm the source in Activity history.

Home does not switch to Away immediately
Google may wait around an hour after the last detected activity, and leaving through the front door alone does not guarantee an immediate change. Test from farther away and allow time for the event to appear.
Home never switches to Away
Check other residents and old phones first, then pets and device activity. Next check background location permission, Wi-Fi/mobile data, signal strength, home address, app ownership, and whether you are testing too close to the geofence.
Home changes correctly but the thermostat does not enter Eco
Presence sensing may be working. Check the thermostat’s own automatic Eco or Home/Away setting and its schedule. A correct household state does not force every thermostat configuration to change.

Camera behavior has a separate automatic on/off control. In Google Home, the camera must be configured to use Presence sensing; in Nest, it must use Home/Away Assist. Check the camera’s automatic switching setting using Google’s camera-specific instructions.

A routine starts but one action fails
That is a routine, integration, or target-device problem—not necessarily a presence problem. Test the failed action manually, confirm the device is online, and inspect the routine’s conditions and permissions.
7. Know which app and terminology apply

Menu labels vary by app version, phone operating system, country, product generation, and whether your Nest account was migrated to Google. Google documents the terminology differences at Home/Away Assist and Presence sensing help. Do not configure phone location in both apps expecting both to operate simultaneously.

- Force-close and reopen Google Home or Nest.
- Restart the phone.
- Update the relevant app from the official app store.
- Recheck location and background-data permissions.
- Review Activity history again after one controlled test.
- Reconfigure or recreate a routine only after Presence sensing events are being recorded correctly.
Community posts sometimes report clearing the Google Home cache or reinstalling the app, but those are anecdotal workarounds, not guaranteed fixes. Avoid deleting the home or factory-resetting Nest products as an early step; Google’s documented path starts with history, permissions, connectivity, home location, and participating devices.

You can manually set the home to Home or Away in Google Home or Nest. Google notes that activity or an arriving participating phone can change it back. Use manual control only while diagnosing the underlying signal, and do not rely on presence sensing alone for safety-critical decisions.

When hardware replacement makes sense
Buying another Nest device will not fix a permission, geofence, household-account, or routine problem. If you are replacing a thermostat anyway, compare current options on the official Nest Learning Thermostat, Nest Thermostat, or ecobee Smart Thermostat Premium pages. Advanced users who want more explicit presence rules can investigate Home Assistant Green or Hubitat Elevation, but both require more setup and maintenance.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Google Nest use GPS continuously for Home/Away Assist?
No. Google says presence sensing generally uses geofencing and Wi-Fi rather than continuously tracking a phone’s exact location.
Why does my phone show Away while my Nest home remains Home?
A Nest or Google Home device may have detected activity, or another household member’s phone may still be Home. Check Activity history to identify the recorded signal.
How long should Away take?
Google says the home may wait around an hour after the last detected activity. It is a general behavior, not a guaranteed timer.
