If a Nest camera records an event but your phone stays silent, start with Google Home or Nest notification settings and your phone’s permissions. If live view or the event itself is missing, check the device’s power and Wi-Fi first. A silent speaker announcement and a silent mechanical chime are separate problems, so test each output independently before resetting or replacing anything.
Identify which alert is missing

Camera detection, push delivery, speaker announcements, and a wired chime are different steps in the chain. Google notes that notification options vary by model and subscription, and each device has its own alert configuration. Household members can also have different preferences. Google’s camera and doorbell notification settings explain the available controls.
Check whether the camera is online and recording
Open the app used to set up the device and check its status and live view. Look at recent activity history as well. If live view fails or the camera is offline, changing phone alerts will not fix the underlying problem. An offline Nest camera or doorbell cannot stream live video or save video to the cloud. Weak Wi-Fi, interference, router settings, outdated apps, and low battery can all contribute to connection trouble. Google’s connectivity troubleshooting covers these causes.
- For a battery model, check its charge. If practical, temporarily connect it to power while troubleshooting.
- Check whether the router’s Wi-Fi name, password, band, security mode, or access-control settings recently changed.
- Move a battery camera closer to the router temporarily, or test from a location with a stronger signal.
- Restart the camera or doorbell and router before considering a factory reset.
Wiring does not always mean a battery-powered model behaves like a fully wired model. Identify the exact product and installation type before drawing conclusions about its power source. Google’s Nest Doorbell product information also notes that the battery model requires Google Home rather than the Nest app or home.nest.com.

Check notifications in the app used for setup
Product generation and setup history matter: some devices are managed in Google Home, while older or migrated products may expose controls in the Nest app. Use the app where the device appears rather than assuming all Nest products have identical menus. Labels can vary by app version and phone.
Google Home-managed cameras and doorbells
- Open Google Home, tap your profile picture or initial, then tap Home settings → Notifications. Enable the relevant home-activity notifications.
- Return to the home screen, tap All devices, then touch and hold the camera or doorbell tile.
- Tap More → Settings → Notifications. Turn on Push notifications and enable the event types you want, such as motion, people, animals, packages, or vehicles where offered.
- Check whether notifications are restricted to Away-only. Open Settings → Events → Seen events and check that the desired categories are enabled.
Google Home app notifications are off by default during initial setup unless enabled. Configure each camera and doorbell separately. See Google’s Home app notification guidance and device-specific alert instructions.
Nest-app-managed cameras and doorbells
- Open the Nest app and tap Settings → Notifications.
- Select the camera, then check When to send. For a temporary test, choose Always rather than No one’s home.
- Under Activity, enable the event categories you want notified about.
The Nest app can offer email notifications; that control is not a universal Google Home feature. Google’s notification troubleshooting describes the distinction.

Check occupancy rules and event filters
A working camera may withhold alerts because the home is treated as occupied or because a particular event type is filtered out. For a controlled test, temporarily set alerts to Always, create one motion event, then restore your preferred privacy and occupancy behavior.
- Review Away-only or No one’s home alert settings.
- Check Home/Away Assist in the Nest app and presence-based automations in Google Home.
- Confirm household presence is accurate; a phone left at home or another member’s presence can keep the home marked occupied.
- Check that the activity is inside any configured activity zone and that its event category is enabled.
- Remember that repeated movement during a continuing flurry of activity may not generate a separate alert for every motion.
Google documents presence-related behavior in its camera alert troubleshooting and general notification guidance.
Make sure the phone can deliver the alert
App settings can be correct while the operating system blocks delivery or sound. Check the notification permissions for Google Home and/or Nest, including banners, lock-screen notifications, sound, and vibration. A common Android path is Settings → Apps → Google Home or Nest → Notifications; menu names vary by phone manufacturer.
- Check Focus, Do Not Disturb, Sleep, Driving, or other scheduled notification modes. Their behavior may differ by phone and alert type.
- On Android, check battery optimization or background restrictions for the app. On iPhone, review Focus settings and any scheduled notification modes or filters.
- If alerts fail only away from home, confirm the phone has working cellular data. Weak Wi-Fi or mobile service can delay notifications.
- Check whether notification previews are hidden if alerts appear to arrive without useful details.
- Test from another authorized phone. If it receives alerts, focus on the first phone’s settings; if no phone receives them while events appear in history, investigate shared app or home settings.
Google recommends checking Android or iOS notification settings and phone connectivity when app settings look correct. Google’s notification troubleshooting steps also suggest restarting the phone to refresh cellular and Wi-Fi connections.

Separate a doorbell press from motion alerts
A doorbell press is not the same event as motion or person detection. If motion alerts work but pressing the button produces no phone alert, check that the doorbell’s visitor or press notifications are enabled for that device, then confirm the receiving account has access to the home. Test another authorized phone to see whether the issue follows one user or the doorbell. Available controls vary by model; Google lists them in its camera and doorbell notification instructions.
Google speaker or display does not announce a visitor
Test phone notifications independently. Then check whether visitor announcements are enabled, whether the intended speaker or display is online and assigned to the same home, and whether its volume is audible. Check Do Not Disturb or night-mode behavior on that device. Controls and availability can differ by model and account configuration.
Mechanical indoor chime does not ring
First see whether the app registers the press. If it does, but the physical chime stays silent, investigate the chime setting and physical circuit rather than phone notification permissions. Check whether the doorbell is battery-powered, wired, or battery-powered while connected to existing wiring. For a wired installation, transformer specifications, chime compatibility, and any model-specific wiring accessory can matter. If the app does not register the press either, return to device power, connectivity, and button operation.

There is no safe universal wiring instruction for every model, country, transformer, and existing chime. Use the installation guide for the exact product, and contact a qualified electrician or installer for transformer or mains-voltage work.
Run a controlled test before changing more settings
- Confirm live view works and note whether the device is online.
- Walk once through the camera’s detection area, then wait for the event to appear in history.
- Compare the history entry with the phone notification. If history updates but the phone does not alert, the camera detected the event; check app and phone delivery settings.
- Press the doorbell once and separately check for a press event, phone alert, speaker or display announcement, and mechanical chime.
- If another authorized phone is available, repeat the test there. A difference between phones narrows the fault to user-specific settings or phone delivery.
This test also distinguishes a missing alert from a missing detection. A history event without a push notification does not prove that notifications are enabled or delivered; Google notes that repeated activity may also be grouped or suppressed. See Google’s alert troubleshooting guidance.
Restart before considering a factory reset
Update the Google Home or Nest app, restart the phone, restart the camera or doorbell, and restart the router. Then repeat the controlled test. A restart preserves device configuration; a factory reset removes the device from its current setup and requires reconfiguration.

Do not factory-reset as a first step. Consider it only if the device remains offline after power and Wi-Fi checks, the app shows an unresolved setup error, or Google Support recommends it. Before resetting, confirm you can access the account and know the Wi-Fi credentials. Google’s setup troubleshooting guidance distinguishes restart and reset steps.
When a subscription matters—and when it does not
Do not buy a subscription just to repair a blocked push notification, offline camera, depleted battery, weak Wi-Fi, or silent mechanical chime. A plan may add event categories, longer history, or richer alert descriptions on supported devices; feature availability depends on the device and plan. As of October 1, 2025, Google calls second-generation Nest Aware Google Home Premium; existing Nest Aware subscribers may retain their benefits under the new name. When to contact support or get installation help
- The device repeatedly goes offline after app, power, router, and Wi-Fi checks.
- Multiple authorized phones miss alerts even though the event appears in history and app settings are enabled.
- The app does not register a doorbell press after connectivity and power checks.
- A mechanical chime remains silent and the diagnosis points to wiring, transformer capacity, or compatibility.
- Several household devices stop working at once, suggesting a wider network or service issue.
For electrical or transformer work, use a qualified installer or electrician rather than relying on software troubleshooting.
