Google Home’s “smarter routines” and cleaner interface are the result of several 2026 updates, not one release with that exact name. The latest documented automation change is Google Home app version 4.20, announced July 8, 2026: Suggested automations began rolling out to Android and iOS, offering templates for home security, morning routines and energy savings. Earlier releases introduced a new household automation editor, additional triggers and actions, and a refreshed camera experience.
The practical change is that household routines are increasingly organized as Automations built from starters, conditions and actions. Personal Routines remain a separate feature, and staged rollout, device compatibility, region and language can affect what appears in your app.
What changed, and when?
Google’s current release history shows a sequence of improvements rather than a single “routine update.”

Google’s release notes are generated with Gemini and may require correction, so treat the dates and availability as Google’s published information rather than a guarantee that every account has the same feature at once. See the release notes at Google Home’s official update page.

Are Google Home Routines now called Automations?
Household routines are increasingly managed as Automations, but Google has not universally renamed every routine. The newer household editor separates each setup into three parts:
- Starters: the event that begins the automation, such as a time, voice command, device state, presence event or security event.
- Conditions: optional requirements that must be true before actions run, such as someone being home.
- Actions: what Google Home does, such as switching lights, changing a thermostat or making an announcement.
Google still documents Personal Routines separately. The new editor is specifically for household automations, so a missing “Routine” label does not necessarily mean your old personal setup was migrated. A Google Home community response also describes users seeing the older Routines presentation replaced by Automations during the 2026 transition, but that is user-observed behavior rather than a universal migration policy. How the new automation editor works
Think of an automation as a simple chain:
Starter → optional condition → action
For example:
- Starter: 7:00 a.m. on weekdays
- Condition: someone is home
- Actions: turn on the kitchen lights, announce today’s weather and play a news briefing
A scheduled starter runs at the specified time. Other starters can respond to a device state, a voice command, presence, an armed security system or another supported event. Conditions narrow when the action is allowed; they do not replace the starter.

How to create a household automation
Labels can differ during staged rollouts, but Google’s documented flow is:

- Open the Google Home app.
- Open the Automations tab.
- Choose the option to create a household automation, or select a Suggested automation template.
- Add at least one starter.
- Add any required conditions.
- Choose one or more actions.
- Give the automation a name.
- Save it and check that it is active.
An automation with no starter will not run automatically. Google says it can still be started manually when it also has no conditions. Device support differs by starter, condition and action, so an option appearing in the editor does not mean every device can use it.
Where to find active and scheduled automations
The Automations tab can show an automation’s name, optional description and active or inactive status. It also displays the next five scheduled automations. That upcoming list excludes Personal Routines and automations created with the script editor.
Suggested automation cards are intended to reduce the blank-page problem for common jobs. You can start with a security, morning or energy-saving template and adjust its starters, conditions and actions instead of building from nothing.

What the cleaner interface changes
Automation organization
The separation of starters, conditions and actions makes complex household logic easier to inspect. Active/inactive status and upcoming schedule visibility also help identify what is enabled before troubleshooting.

Camera navigation
Google’s spring 2026 announcement describes a refreshed camera interface, performance improvements, improved event-history navigation and a more modern presentation. The exact appearance and available controls can vary by camera generation, platform and account; Google has not published a universal speed guarantee.
More ready-made actions
Predefined assistant actions reduce the need to type custom commands. Supported choices include announcing the current time or weather, asking what time to set an alarm, playing a chime, music, news, a podcast, radio or sleep sounds, and telling a joke. Google said these actions were not yet supported by Ask Home or Help me create when announced.
Rollout, compatibility and prerequisites
- Platforms: Suggested automations in version 4.20 are rolling out to Android and iOS.
- Staged availability: Google says the rollout began globally over several weeks. Installing the latest app does not guarantee immediate access.
- Region and language: Google lists availability restrictions for the automation editor and individual features.
- Device support: Starters, conditions and actions vary by device and model.
- Matter: Adding Matter devices to automations requires a Google Home hub, according to Google’s Matter automation guidance.
- Firmware: App updates and device firmware updates are separate. Speakers and displays receive firmware in stages; see Google’s speaker and display update information and firmware guidance.
How to update Google Home
On Android:
- Open the Google Play Store.
- Tap Search and search for Google Home.
- Tap Update if the button appears.
On iPhone or iPad, use the Apple App Store and update Google Home from your account’s app-update list. Updating is worthwhile for new features and setup improvements, but staged server-side availability can still delay a feature. Android instructions are also listed at Google’s update help page.

Troubleshooting missing or unreliable automations
The feature is missing
- Update Google Home from the appropriate app store.
- Confirm the phone or tablet runs a supported Android or iOS version.
- Allow time for the feature’s staged rollout.
- Check the Google account’s home, region and language settings.
- Verify that the device supports the selected starter, condition or action.
- Force-close and reopen Google Home, then reboot the affected smart-home device.
The automation never runs
- Confirm that it is active.
- Check that it has a valid starter.
- Review conditions that may be false.
- Make sure the device belongs to the correct home.
- Check whether a Matter hub is required.
- Confirm regional, language and device support.
The automation runs unexpectedly
Review the Activity feed for “Routine started” events, then inspect the starter and actions. Overlapping or conflicting automations can produce surprising results. Google’s troubleshooting guidance is available at this support page.

You switched back to the old editor
Google allows users to revert to the previous household routine editor, but the trade-off is significant: existing automations created with the new editor can still be checked and started, yet they cannot be edited in the old editor. Changes made in the current automation may also be lost when loading the previous editor. Avoid switching back unless you accept that limitation.

No subscription is required simply to use the basic household automation editor. Standard lights, plugs, speakers and schedules generally depend on compatible devices, the Google Home app, Wi-Fi and supported availability rather than a Premium plan.
Premium matters for particular camera and AI features. Google lists U.S. prices observed in August 2026 as $10 per month or $100 per year for Standard, and $20 per month or $200 per year for Advanced. Prices and features can vary by country and account. Standard includes features such as event video history, intelligent alerts, Gemini for Home and Help me create; Advanced adds longer history, 24/7 video history, descriptive notifications, video-history search, event descriptions and daily summaries. Homes with many devices or complicated logic benefit most from the new model: templates reduce setup time, conditions add precision, and status and schedule views make auditing easier. Casual users may mainly notice the new terminology and may need a short adjustment period.

The key point is to look for Automations rather than assume every Personal Routine was renamed. Update the app, allow for staged delivery, and verify device and regional support before concluding that a feature is broken.
