Google Home Live Search lets Gemini answer questions about what a compatible home camera is seeing now. It requires Google Home Premium Advanced and is best understood as an on-demand way to check a camera view—not an AI guard continuously monitoring your home or a replacement for professional security monitoring.
What Google Home Live Search does
Live Search is a Gemini for Home feature in the Google Home ecosystem. Instead of opening several feeds or scrubbing through recorded events, you can ask a natural-language question about the current view. Google’s example is asking whether the garbage cans are out front. Similar practical questions might be whether a package is on the porch, whether a car is in the driveway, or whether a pet is in a visible room. These are examples, not guaranteed commands or results for every camera.
Google describes this as a way to search camera streams to understand the current state of the home. It extends camera-history search, which is for finding things that happened earlier. Google’s Live Search notes describe the live feature and its distinction from searching past events.

The phrase “AI watching your home” can suggest that Gemini independently observes every camera, notices threats, and takes action. Google’s documented Live Search behavior is narrower: a user asks a question about a supported camera view, and Gemini responds. The documentation does not establish that Gemini continuously supervises every feed or autonomously responds to emergencies.

“Now” also has practical limits: the scene can change between image capture, AI processing, and the answer. For an immediate decision, check the live feed directly rather than treating a text response as a guaranteed, instantaneous account of events.
What can you ask?
Try clear questions about visible, concrete things, such as:
- “Are the garbage cans out front?”
- “Is there a package at the door?”
- “Is the driveway empty?”
- “Is the dog in the living room?”
- “What is on the porch?”
These are representative questions, not a published exhaustive command list. A useful answer depends on the camera being online, the object being in frame and visible, and the image being clear enough to interpret. Placement, field of view, distance, lighting, glare, rain, motion blur, and obstructions all matter. If a home has several cameras, name the room or camera clearly in the question and use distinct camera names.

Who can use it, and what does it cost?
Google says Live Search requires Google Home Premium Advanced. On Google’s U.S. store page, checked September 24, 2026, the plan is listed at $20 per month or $200 per year; annual billing is $40 less than paying monthly for 12 months. Prices and plan availability can differ by country. Check Google’s U.S. plan page for current pricing and terms.

Google describes Home Premium as a whole-home subscription rather than a separate subscription for every Nest camera. Eligible newer Nest cameras or doorbells may include a one-month trial, but eligibility varies; Google says there is a limit of one $0 trial per home. Which cameras are supported?
Google’s release notes name Nest cameras and select “Gemini Built-in” cameras, including the onn Outdoor Camera Plug-In. That does not mean every camera that can appear in Google Home supports Live Search. Confirm the exact model, account, country, and feature availability with Google before buying hardware or upgrading for this feature.

Do not confuse Live Search with 24/7 recording. Google says 24/7 video history is limited to eligible wired Nest cameras and doorbells; battery Nest Doorbells do not get 24/7 history even when wired. See Google’s camera and history limitations.
How to get started
- Set up a compatible camera or doorbell in the Google Home app and confirm its live stream works.
- Check that Google Home Premium Advanced is active, or that a trial is available for your home.
- Enable Gemini for Home if it is available and offered for your home. Google’s setup and availability guidance notes that eligibility varies by device, plan, and country.
- Ask Gemini for Home a specific question about the current camera view using the supported Google Home interface. If there are multiple cameras, identify the camera or room by its name.
- If Live Search is missing, check the camera model, plan, app update, Gemini for Home eligibility, and whether the feature has reached your account and market.
Google says rollouts can take time even when the latest app is installed. The feature’s availability and interface may vary by country, language, account, device, and rollout status, so a fixed menu path for launching a query may not apply to everyone. To manage a subscription, Google documents this path: Google Home app → profile picture or initial → Home settings → Subscriptions → Google Home Premium. That path manages the plan; it is not necessarily the launch path for every Live Search query.

How reliable is an answer?
Read Gemini’s response as an interpretation of an image, not ground truth. It might miss an object in darkness, mistake a shadow for an animal, confuse a package with another object, or describe a scene that has already changed. It could also refer to the wrong camera or misread a partly blocked view. A confident answer does not prove that the system saw the scene correctly.
For a low-stakes check, ask about a large, stationary object in good light, then compare the response with the camera’s live image. If the answer is unclear, specify the camera and ask a simpler follow-up. Do not rely on Live Search alone to verify a break-in, protect a child, assess a medical emergency, or decide whether it is safe to enter a property. Use appropriate emergency services or security equipment for urgent situations.

A camera view can reveal far more than a package or driveway: household members, visitors, children, documents, routines, and private spaces. Live Search adds AI interpretation of camera imagery to the experience. Before enabling it, consider whether the convenience is worth that processing for each camera and who in the household is comfortable with it.
- Keep cameras out of bathrooms and, where possible, bedrooms and other sensitive spaces.
- Tell household members and regular visitors where cameras are placed and what features they can use.
- Review who has access to the Google Home household and the camera feeds.
- Secure the Google Account with strong authentication and review available privacy, sharing, and deletion controls.
- Consult Google’s current privacy terms and controls for details on processing, retention, and data choices. The Live Search release notes alone do not specify every backend retention or review practice.
Google’s documentation also says users can choose to share video clips with Google. That statement should not be read as proof that all Live Search footage is retained or used to train models; the release notes do not settle those separate questions.

Live Search is not Search Live
Google uses similar names for different camera features:

When the feature is missing or gives a poor answer
- Live Search does not appear: Check that Advanced is active, Gemini for Home is available and enabled, the camera is eligible, and the app is current. The feature may not have rolled out to your account or market yet. Google notes that some accounts, including Google Workspace and Family Link child accounts, may not support Gemini for Home early access.
- It uses the wrong camera: Give each camera a distinct name and refer to that room or camera explicitly. Check household access and camera setup.
- It cannot see the object: Verify that the camera is online and the object is in frame; consider distance, lighting, weather, glare, motion blur, or an obstruction.
- It reports something that is no longer there: The analyzed view may have changed before the reply arrived. Open the live feed to check the current scene.
- You expected continuous recording: Live Search is not recording. Check whether the specific camera qualifies for 24/7 history; battery Nest Doorbells are not eligible for that history, even when wired.
Is Advanced worth it for Live Search?
It is most appealing if you already own supported Nest or Gemini Built-in cameras and will also use Advanced’s longer event history, eligible 24/7 history, and camera-history search. If all you want is an occasional way to look at a camera, the recurring $20 monthly U.S. price may be hard to justify: Google says live streaming itself is available without a subscription. It is a poor fit if you require local-only video processing, universal camera compatibility, guaranteed threat detection, or professional monitoring.
Bottom line: Live Search is a convenience layer for asking about a supported camera’s current view. It is not evidence that Gemini continuously watches every camera, and it should not be treated as a security guard. Check device and regional eligibility before paying for Advanced, and verify important situations by viewing the camera or using an appropriate security service.
