Google Home Got Smarter: What Gemini Changes, What Costs Extra, and Which Devices Work

Google Home’s biggest upgrade is Gemini for Home: a new voice-assistant experience plus changes to cameras, automations, and the Home app. Some features work on supported existing Nest speakers and displays; others require a newer device, an eligible rollout, or Google Home Premium. You do not need to buy the new speaker simply to try the software upgrade.

What changed in Google Home?

Google describes this as an ecosystem update, not just an app redesign. It brings together four related pieces: the Google Home app, Gemini for Home voice assistance, AI features for cameras and automations, and a new speaker designed for Gemini. Which parts you can use depends on device, country, language, firmware, account, rollout status, and sometimes subscription.

• The app: Updated device controls, camera tools, automation options, and a path for bringing some older Nest products into Home.
• The voice assistant: Gemini for Home is the newer assistant experience on supported Home speakers and displays; it should not be taken to mean every Google Assistant device or surface changes in the same way.
• AI features: Ask Home, Home Brief, Help me create, and camera intelligence add ways to ask about or manage the home.
• Google Home Premium: Paid Standard and Advanced plans add features including longer camera history and, depending on tier, Gemini Live and enhanced camera tools.
• New hardware: The 2026 Google Home Speaker is an audio speaker built specifically for Gemini, not a smart display.

What can Gemini for Home do?

Handle more natural, multi-step requests

Rather than requiring short, rigid commands, Gemini is designed to interpret conversational requests, corrections, and multiple actions. Google’s examples include “Dim the kitchen lights, play some relaxing music and set a timer for 20 minutes” and “Turn off all the lights except for my bedside lamp.” You can also correct yourself mid-request, such as changing an instruction about a coffee maker from off to on. The result still depends on compatible devices, clear device names, and the commands supported by their integrations.

Hold an open-ended conversation with Gemini Live

Gemini Live supports a more open-ended conversation on compatible speakers and displays. It is not available on every older device: Google says older products may support most Gemini for Home features without supporting Live. Google Home Premium Standard and Advanced include Gemini Live, according to the U.S. plan comparison.

Find music and podcasts by describing them

You can try requests such as “Play that song that goes [lyrics],” “Play the song from [movie] where [scene],” or “Play a podcast episode about [topic].” Gemini can also respond to a request for an acoustic version or a short list of an artist’s best-known songs. Playback depends on your connected media services, account permissions, content availability, and the device; a descriptive request does not guarantee that every track or episode can be found.

Control more devices with everyday language

Google’s 2026 updates describe improved targeting across homes and rooms, including devices with unusual names, and more flexible lighting and appliance commands. You might ask for lights in “the color of the ocean,” set a specific humidity level, or ask a compatible smart oven to preheat to 350 degrees. Google reported that common smart-home commands could be up to 40% faster in its March 17, 2026 update; that is Google’s reported improvement, not an independent benchmark. Ask about activity and create automations

Ask Home is a natural-language layer for interacting with devices and understanding what is happening at home. Home Brief can summarize activity from cameras and doorbells, which is useful for triage but is not a complete security record. With Help me create, you can describe a routine—for example, “I want to create a relaxing evening routine”—and receive a suggested automation such as dimming lights, playing music, or sending an alert. Inspect the proposed triggers, conditions, actions, schedules, and permissions before saving; generated steps can misunderstand what you meant.

What’s new for cameras, doorbells, and automations?

Camera and doorbell intelligence

Gemini features can explain recorded activity in more descriptive terms, such as a landscaper pruning roses or a rabbit eating vegetables. Depending on device and plan, Google also lists event explanations, daily summaries, natural-language video-history search, zoomed alert previews, and tools for navigating or cropping camera views. These features can make footage easier to review, but descriptions, object detection, familiar-face features, and summaries can be incomplete or wrong. Treat them as prompts to check the recording—not as guaranteed identification, proof of an event, or a substitute for security monitoring.

More automation starters, conditions, and actions

The Home app’s automation editor has gained additional options. Examples of starters or conditions include an oven running, stopping, pausing, or reporting an error; a security system being armed; and a device being plugged in or docked. Actions include announcing tomorrow’s weather, starting wake-light effects, pulsing a smart bulb for a specified time, and starting sleep-light effects.

A useful example is: if a compatible oven reports an error, announce it on a kitchen speaker and send a notification. The exact trigger and action choices depend on the appliance and its integration. Some options appear in the app’s automation editor but may not yet be supported by Ask Home or Help me create; check the editor rather than assuming natural-language generation can configure every option.

A more unified app, with a preview caveat for older Nest products

Google is bringing newer and older Nest cameras, doorbells, thermostats, and locks into a more unified Home experience. A one-click transfer from Nest to Home for older thermostats, cameras, locks, and smoke alarms is described in the 2026 release notes as Public Preview. Public Preview is a testing channel, not general availability. Transferring a device into the Home app is also distinct from migrating a legacy Nest Account to a Google Account; account migration may matter for full Home Premium benefits.

Which devices support Gemini for Home?

Google lists the following first-party speakers and displays for the Gemini for Home voice assistant. Gemini Live support is narrower: older devices in the table are among those Google says can use most Gemini features but not Live.

Google’s compatibility and setup guidance is at Gemini for Home requirements and setup. A compatible model does not guarantee identical features: country, language, account, rollout, and product differences still apply.

What does Google Home Premium cost, and is it worth it?

These are Google’s U.S. prices as of August 18, 2026. Annual billing costs less than twelve monthly payments, but Google says availability and features vary by country and product.

Advanced is a harder sell if you have no Nest cameras or doorbells: its main additions are camera history and analysis. Speaker-only households should compare what they actually want with Standard rather than paying for the larger camera feature set. Some Gemini capabilities are available without Home Premium, so “Gemini for Home” does not automatically mean a subscription is required. Google also says Home Premium is included with Google AI Pro and Ultra; check current bundle terms before buying a separate plan if you already subscribe.

Premium requires a Google Account, supported country, internet connection, and the Google Home app; some benefits may require migration from a legacy Nest Account. See Google’s current U.S. plan page for eligibility and feature terms.

Should you buy the 2026 Google Home Speaker?

Google announced the audio-only Google Home Speaker at $99.99, with units scheduled to reach stores on June 25, 2026. It is designed for Gemini’s natural conversation, context retention, expressive voices, and mid-sentence corrections, and it can pair with a Google TV Streamer for enhanced audio. It is not required for every Gemini feature: several existing Nest speakers and displays are on Google’s compatibility list.

• Try your existing hardware first if you have a supported Nest speaker or display and mainly want conversational commands.
• Consider the new speaker if you want fresh audio hardware designed for Gemini, your current speaker is unreliable, or you want to use a compatible Gemini Live setup.
• Do not buy it solely for paid camera features. The speaker does not unlock every Home Premium benefit; plan eligibility still applies.

How to request access and set up Gemini

Request Gemini for Home early access

1. Sign in to Google Groups and open Settings → Global settings.
2. Confirm Add me to their groups is enabled, then save.
3. Update the Google Home app.
4. In Google Home, tap your profile picture or initial, then Home settings → Early Access.
5. Request access and wait for Google’s invitation or rollout notification.

Complete setup after access arrives

1. Open Google Home and tap the “Introducing Gemini for Home” notification, then Get started.
2. Follow the prompts, review the disclosures, and configure the voice assistant and response filtering.
3. If you dismissed the notification, go to Profile picture or initial → Home settings, find the “Set up Gemini for Home for more natural conversations” banner, and tap Get started.

Android users should update Speech Recognition and Synthesis before setup. Early access to the voice assistant is separate from the Home app’s Public Preview program.

Turn on Continued Conversation or change the voice

To enable Continued Conversation, open Google Home app → Profile picture or initial → Home settings → Gemini for Home voice assistant → Continued Conversation, then turn it on. Google announced in April 2026 that the upgraded feature was available globally across supported languages and regions, but rollout and device eligibility can affect what appears.

To choose a voice, go to Google Home app → Profile picture or initial → Home settings → Gemini for Home voice assistant → Voice selection. Google says the new Home Speaker ships with 10 new voices; the app’s selected voice applies to speakers and displays in that home for everyone.

What to check if a feature is missing or behaves unexpectedly

• Gemini option missing: Update the Home app, confirm the Google Account and supported country, check device firmware, and verify any required Groups setting. Google stages rollouts, so the latest app version alone does not guarantee immediate access.
• Assistant works but Live does not: Check whether the specific speaker or display supports Live; older and third-party devices may support other Gemini features without it.
• The wrong device responds: Use explicit room and device names, especially in homes with multiple rooms or similarly named devices.
• An automation looks wrong: Check every starter, condition, action, schedule, and permission before saving; try the app editor if the generated option is unavailable.
• A camera summary seems wrong or incomplete: Open the footage and verify it yourself. AI-generated descriptions are not definitive identification or a complete record.
• A plan benefit is unavailable: Verify country, product, account, subscription, and whether legacy Nest Account migration is relevant.
• Internet is down: Cloud-based assistant and camera features may be unavailable or degraded.
• Children use the home: Review supervised-account settings, centralized parental controls, content filters, and response settings.

If those checks do not explain the problem, use Google’s Gemini for Home help page rather than repeatedly resetting hardware.

Privacy and reliability trade-offs

Camera summaries, searchable history, familiar-face alerts, and daily recaps mean household recordings and activity are being analyzed and retained under plan-specific limits. Before enabling them, decide which household members can access recordings, what supervised children can ask, and whether the convenience is worth the added data processing and retention. Configure parental controls and response filtering for the household rather than assuming one setting fits every person.

For security decisions, treat Gemini’s camera output as an aid to review footage, not a replacement for checking it. A descriptive alert can help you decide what to inspect; it cannot guarantee that a person, animal, or event has been identified correctly.

Which choice makes sense for your home?

• Existing Nest speaker owner: Check compatibility and try the software experience before replacing working hardware.
• Camera-heavy household: Compare the retention and search features in Advanced with your actual footage-review habits; Standard may be enough if you mainly want alerts or Gemini Live.
• New speaker buyer: Consider the $99.99 Home Speaker if you want Gemini-focused hardware, but do not confuse it with a display or assume it includes every paid feature.
• Privacy-conscious or rollout-averse household: Wait until the features you need are broadly available and you are comfortable with the camera-analysis and retention trade-offs.
