Google Home’s Gemini-powered Live Search lets eligible users ask what a supported Nest camera or doorbell sees at the moment. It requires Google Home Premium Advanced; it is different from asking Gemini to find an event in recorded footage, and it is not a security-monitoring service.
What Google Home Live Search does
Live Search uses Gemini to interpret a compatible camera’s current view in response to a natural-language question. Google’s example is asking whether the garbage cans are out front. Rather than simply reporting that motion was detected, Gemini attempts to describe visible content in the scene.
For example, if you are away from home, you might ask whether a package is outside and get a spoken description of what the doorbell camera currently shows. Other questions—such as whether a car is in the driveway or a dog is in the living room—are illustrative, not guaranteed commands. Results depend on what the camera can see and what the feature can interpret.
Google introduced Live Search in its March 31, 2026 release notes and described broader availability on June 2. It is now part of a wider Gemini for Home rollout, not a feature every Google Home user automatically has. Google’s release notes describe the capability and rollout.

Live Search versus camera history
The key distinction is whether you are asking about the present or the past. A question about a package could mean “Is one there now?” or “Was one delivered earlier?” Those require different features.

What you need to use it
- Google Home Premium Advanced. Google identifies Advanced as the required tier for Live Search and its advanced Gemini camera features.
- An eligible camera in Google Home. Google lists supported Nest cameras set up in Google Home and legacy Nest cameras transferred into the Home app. Its eligibility guidance describes Nest cameras launched in 2021 or later, with some supported legacy models. Certain Gemini Built-in partner cameras are also mentioned in Google’s release notes. Basic Google Home compatibility alone does not establish Live Search support; check Google’s camera-feature eligibility page for the current list.
- A qualifying account and home. Gemini camera features are limited to adult Home Admins. Google also requires users to review and acknowledge Gemini for Home disclosures.
- Gemini for Home access, in a supported market and language. The feature has been rolling out gradually, and availability varies by country, language, device, and account. Google’s availability information and camera-feature page list supported combinations; having the latest app does not guarantee access.
- A working camera and connection. Gemini cannot interpret a feed that is offline or not refreshing reliably.
Google’s listed markets include the United States, Canada, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. Language support varies by country, so being in a listed country does not by itself guarantee access in every language.

How to ask a question
Google documents voice use through Gemini for Home and compatible Google Home speakers, displays, or supported Home interfaces. On speakers, users can receive an audio description; supported smart displays can show video clips alongside audio. There is no single universal app tap path established in Google’s published instructions.

- Confirm that the camera is set up in Google Home and that your home has Gemini for Home access.
- Confirm that your account is an adult Home Admin and that the home has Google Home Premium Advanced.
- Ask a specific question about the current view. Google’s documented example is: “Are the garbage cans out front?”
- If Gemini cannot answer, check camera status, account eligibility, subscription, language, region, and rollout access before assuming the camera itself is incompatible.
Specific prompts about a location or visible object are more useful than vague questions such as “What’s going on?” The feature describes what Gemini can interpret at the time it processes the view; it does not promise to watch continuously or keep tracking a scene after replying.
What it costs in the U.S.
As listed on Google’s U.S. Store on August 18, 2026, Premium Standard costs $10 per month or $100 per year, while Advanced costs $20 per month or $200 per year. Live Search is associated with Advanced, not Standard. Prices and plan inclusions can change, and prices outside the U.S. may differ.

Google says some Google AI Pro subscribers receive Standard benefits and can upgrade to Advanced for an additional fee, while Google AI Ultra includes Advanced. Check your current Google One benefits and the Google Home Premium bundle announcement before subscribing; entitlements and offers may change.
Accuracy and privacy limits
Live Search is a generated interpretation, not a verified security fact. A dark scene, obstruction, distant object, unusual camera angle, or weak connection can make an answer incomplete or wrong. The scene can also change after Gemini has analyzed it. Google advises users to check Gemini responses for accuracy; do not treat a confident-sounding answer as proof that a door is secure, a person has left, or a hazard is absent.

Consider what the camera can capture before enabling AI features: household members, children, visitors, workers, and neighbors may appear in view. Review the Gemini for Home disclosures, household permissions, camera placement, and relevant microphone controls. Camera streaming or recording, AI descriptions, historical searches, and voice-assistant activity are distinct activities; the subscription listing alone does not answer every question about retention or model training. Do not infer a training policy from general privacy language.
A speaker’s microphone-off control affects that speaker’s microphone, not camera recording or every account-based process. Google describes a physical microphone control on the Google Home Speaker; check the controls on your own devices and settings.
When Advanced may be worth it
Advanced is easier to justify if you already own several eligible Nest cameras, often check them remotely, and would use searchable history, descriptive alerts, or daily summaries as well as Live Search. It may also make sense if you already receive a qualifying plan benefit through Google AI.

Opening the camera feed manually is a straightforward alternative when you want to inspect the image yourself. Other camera ecosystems and local-recording systems may suit different needs, but their features, subscriptions, and Google Home compatibility must be checked separately.

Troubleshooting missing or unhelpful answers
- “I don’t see Live Search.” Check Advanced eligibility and whether Gemini for Home has reached your home or account; rollout is not universal.
- “Gemini can’t find my camera.” Verify that the model is eligible and set up in Google Home. A camera appearing in the app does not necessarily qualify for Gemini camera features.
- The camera works, but Gemini cannot answer. Check that it is online and refreshing, then ask a more specific question about a visible object or location. Poor lighting or an obstructed view may prevent interpretation.
- The camera is still managed in the Nest app. Google says eligible legacy cameras need to be transferred into Google Home for these features.
- The feature is unavailable in my language or location. Consult Google’s supported-market and language information; availability can differ by both.
- The answer sounds certain but the scene is ambiguous. Open the live feed or recorded footage and verify visually rather than relying on the generated description.
