There is no full native Google Home app for Windows 11. The official desktop option is Google Home for web, which lets you view and control certain devices from a compatible browser. You must still use the Google Home mobile app for initial setup, many account changes, Matter commissioning, and controls that are not available on the web.
Does Google Home work on Windows 11?
Yes, but through a browser rather than a complete Windows application. Google says the Google Home app requires an Android or iOS device and cannot be used on a computer for device setup or normal mobile-app functionality. The supported Windows route is Google Home for web.
Do not confuse it with the separate Google app for desktop. That Windows application provides Search, Lens, AI features, screen sharing, and file-finding tools; it is not a Google Home smart-home controller.

Set up the devices first with the Google Home app on a supported phone or tablet. Google currently lists Android 9.0 or later and iOS/iPadOS 17.0 or later.

- Install Google Home on an Android or Apple mobile device.
- Sign in with your Google Account and connect the device to your home Wi-Fi.
- Add each Google, Nest, Matter, or compatible third-party device.
- Assign devices to the correct home and room.
- On Windows 11, open a browser that supports WebRTC and Media Source Extensions.
- Go to home.google.com and choose Go to Google Home if prompted.
- Sign in with the same Google Account used in the mobile app.
- Select Devices, choose a room, and open a device tile.
The controls shown on the tile are the controls available for that device on the web. Internet Explorer is not supported.
What can you control from Google Home for web?
Google deliberately describes the web experience as supporting certain devices. Availability and control depth vary by product, integration, account, and rollout status. A device appearing in the mobile app does not guarantee that every mobile control will appear in the browser.

Cameras and doorbells
Google Home for web can display supported Nest camera and doorbell feeds, show multiple cameras, open an individual feed, and use picture-in-picture in supported browsers. You can also save camera clips to the computer; Google’s documentation lists downloads of up to five minutes per clip.
Camera availability is not universal. A camera originally configured through the Nest app may remain tied to the Nest ecosystem. Battery-powered cameras and doorbells can also stop streaming automatically to preserve battery life.
Automations
The web interface can check and run most supported automations. With the appropriate access, advanced scripted automations can be edited at home.google.com/automations:

- Open the automation and edit its script.
- Select Validate.
- Correct any reported errors.
- Select Save.
- Leave Activate enabled if it should run immediately.
Google warns that automations are for convenience, not safety- or security-critical tasks. Do not rely on one to protect a lock, respond to an emergency, manage medical equipment, or prevent dangerous heating conditions.
What still requires the Google Home mobile app?
- Initial setup and onboarding of Google Home devices.
- Many account, household, room, and permission changes.
- Adding some third-party services.
- Matter commissioning and related device setup.
- Device-specific controls unavailable in the browser.
- Some troubleshooting and recovery steps.

Google Home for web versus the Nest web app
home.nest.com is not the same service as Google Home for web. It remains relevant for some older Nest products and devices originally configured through the Nest app.
If a camera or other Nest product is missing from Google Home for web, check whether it was set up in the Nest app, whether an account migration is required, and whether the product is supported in the current Google Home experience. Use Google Home for web for devices that appear there, and the Nest web app for products or functions that remain tied to the older Nest system.
Third-party devices and Matter
Works with Google Home
Many third-party products are first configured in the manufacturer’s app and then linked to Google Home. In the mobile app, the usual path is Add → Device → Link app or service. Select the manufacturer and authorize the connection.

Compatibility does not guarantee identical controls on Windows. A light, plug, thermostat, lock, or camera may appear in Google Home while exposing only a subset of the manufacturer’s features.

Matter is a compatibility standard, not a promise that any Windows PC can commission a device. Google says Matter devices require a compatible Matter hub for setup, control, and away-from-home operation. Products using Thread may also require suitable Thread-capable hardware.
Google’s compatibility directory includes categories such as lights, plugs, switches, thermostats, locks, garage-door controllers, sensors, blinds, televisions, streaming devices, and bridges. Exact features depend on the product and integration. See Google’s Matter setup guidance before buying.
Why a device may be missing or unavailable
The site opens, but devices are missing
- Confirm that Windows and the mobile app are using the same Google Account.
- Check that you selected the correct Google Home household.
- Confirm that the device appears in the mobile app and is online.
- Check whether it is linked only to the manufacturer’s app.
- Reconnect the manufacturer service under Google Home’s linked services.
- If it was originally configured in Nest, try home.nest.com.
For a linked third-party device, Google also documents the voice command “Hey Google, sync my devices.” You can request a category, such as “Hey Google, sync my lights.”
The device is visible but has few controls
This can be normal. Google Home for web has limited, device-dependent controls. Use the mobile Google Home app or the manufacturer’s app when you need advanced settings, special modes, firmware options, or controls that are not displayed in the browser.

Camera video does not appear
Check that the camera is visible and online in the mobile app, verify whether it was originally configured through Google Home or Nest, confirm account migration where required, and use a browser supporting WebRTC and Media Source Extensions. Battery-saving behavior can also stop a battery-powered camera stream.
A third-party device stopped working
Cloud integrations can be discontinued by manufacturers. For example, Google’s support documentation says Belkin ended Wemo cloud service on January 31, 2026, affecting Wemo features that depended on that service. This does not mean every piece of Wemo hardware became universally unusable; the impact concerns functions relying on the discontinued cloud connection.

No. The Windows dashboard is a cloud-connected control interface, not a local smart-home controller. Remote operation can fail when your home internet is down, a device is offline, Google’s service is unavailable, a manufacturer’s cloud service is unavailable, or an integration has expired.
That limitation also applies to many automations. Google notes that automations depend on working internet, Wi-Fi, and Google or third-party services. For important devices, retain a physical control method and do not make cloud automation your only safety measure.

The main documented voice-control experience is speaking to a supported Google Nest speaker, display, or other compatible device, rather than using a Windows-native Google Home voice panel. Examples include:

- “Hey Google, turn on the living room light.”
- “Hey Google, turn off the desk plug.”
- “Hey Google, set the thermostat to 72.”
- “Hey Google, show the front-door camera.”
These commands are directed at Google Assistant or supported Gemini for Home experiences on compatible household devices. Speaking into a Windows microphone through an unofficial workaround is not the same as having an official Windows Home controller.
Alternatives to Google Home for web
Manufacturer dashboards
Some brands provide web dashboards or desktop software with deeper controls. They are useful when you need advanced features, but each normally covers only one manufacturer’s ecosystem.
Home Assistant
Home Assistant is a broader platform for local-first control, complex automations, and cross-brand integrations. It can provide a stronger Windows-accessible dashboard, but usually requires dedicated hardware, configuration, updates, and ongoing maintenance.

Android emulators
An Android emulator may theoretically run the mobile Google Home app on Windows, but it is not Google’s documented desktop solution. Bluetooth and local-network discovery, Matter commissioning, camera and microphone permissions, Google Play Services, notifications, performance, and account security may all be problematic. Treat an emulator as an experimental workaround, not an equivalent Windows app.
Before buying hardware or installing an emulator, try the free official route at home.google.com.
Security checklist for browser control
- Use a strong, unique Google password and enable two-step verification.
- Lock the Windows PC whenever you leave it unattended.
- Avoid using a shared browser profile for a household control account.
- Review household members and permissions periodically.
- Do not rely solely on browser automations for locks, alarms, heating safety, or emergencies.
- Keep physical or manufacturer-app controls available for critical devices.
Verdict
Google Home is practical on Windows 11 when you want a larger dashboard, supported device toggles, camera monitoring, saved clips, or automation access. It is not a full Windows replacement for the mobile app. Use the phone or tablet for setup and Matter onboarding, expect device-by-device differences, and keep the Nest web app or manufacturer app in mind for older or specialized products.
