Google Home now lets a home’s administrators invite people as either Admins or Members, with optional Settings and Activity permissions for Members. The change began appearing in Public Preview in December 2024; Google’s current Help Center documents it as an active sharing workflow, not just a new rollout. For most people who need everyday control, start with Member access and add only the permissions they need.
What the access levels mean
These roles govern access to one shared Google Home. They are not Google Workspace administrator accounts. A household Admin can manage the home and its members; a Member gets more limited access, with optional permissions for home settings or activity history. A Workspace administrator, by contrast, can control whether people in an organization may use Google Home at all.
Google first reported the Member role as a Public Preview rollout in December 2024. Google’s current invitation instructions and access-permission documentation now describe the roles as part of the standard sharing workflow. The original “rolling out” headline is historical; the useful question today is which access to grant.

Admin: full control of the home
An Admin can add, manage, and remove people; add or remove devices; delete the home; share devices and data with partner services; link subscriptions; manage presence sensing; change device and home settings; and access devices through the Nest app where supported. Admins can view and delete home history, manage camera clip lending, manage the home address, and set up features such as Voice Match and Gemini for Home where available.

Choose Admin only for someone who genuinely co-manages the household, such as a trusted partner. It is not merely a convenient way to let someone operate lights or a thermostat: an Admin can change the home for everyone, remove people and devices, and access sensitive history.
Member: basic use, with optional permissions
A basic Member can use supported device controls and may have basic camera live-view access. Members can manage personal settings such as Voice Match, Face Match, linked media services, and personal presence, and can see the names, email addresses, and access levels of people in the home. Device capabilities vary, so Member status does not promise access to every control on every device.
By default, Members do not get broad home-configuration privileges or home-wide activity history. An Admin can grant two additional permissions independently:

It can also include supported Nest Wifi features and applicable subscription settings, and lets the Member access devices added to the home later. It does not make that person an Admin: Members still cannot manage people, delete the home, or add and remove devices.
- Activity: Allows a Member to view supported device and home-wide history, which may include camera, lock, Nest Wifi, presence, and automation activity. Depending on the compatible devices and services, that history can include video or audio data.
Settings is a substantial level of control; Activity is a meaningful privacy grant. Neither should be enabled just because someone needs basic household controls.

This is a summary of Google’s documented role model, not a guarantee that every listed control appears for every household. Device, integration, account, country, app state, and legacy Nest setup can affect availability.
How to invite someone
- Open the Google Home app.
- Tap your profile picture or initial at the top right.
- Tap Switch home and select the home you want to share.
- Tap Add, then Home member.
- Enter the person’s name or email address and tap Next.
- Choose Admin or Member. If you choose Member, switch on Settings and/or Activity only if needed.
- Tap Next, review the choice, and tap Invite.
The invitee receives an email with instructions. Google may also offer to add them to the Google Family Group if there is room and they are not already in one. App labels can vary: older instructions described a route through Settings > Household & access, while Google’s current documented route begins at Profile > Switch home. Confirm the selected home before sending an invitation; invitations apply to a particular home.
Which access should you choose?
- Spouse or long-term co-owner: Admin if both of you should be able to manage the entire home. Otherwise, Member with only the extra permissions needed.
- Trusted roommate: Begin with Member. Add Settings if they need to manage devices or automations; add Activity only if they need to inspect household history.
- Adult family member: Basic Member is a sensible starting point for ordinary device use. Add Settings or Activity for a specific need.
- Child: Invite the child through the appropriate supervised account setup, but do not treat Member as a complete parental-control system. Google applies additional restrictions.
- Babysitter, cleaner, contractor, or short-term guest: Avoid Admin, Settings, and Activity. If an invitation is necessary, basic Member access is the least-privileged option, but it may still be broader or more persistent than the task requires. Consider device-specific sharing instead.
- Property manager or service provider: Avoid Admin unless full home management is genuinely required. If they need access to only one device, check whether that device’s own sharing or guest controls are a better fit.
- Someone who needs camera or lock history: Activity may provide relevant history, but discuss what it can reveal before enabling it. Actual lock controls and history depend on the device and integration.
The guiding rule is least privilege: grant the smallest permission set that accomplishes the task. Google’s roles are home-wide, so they may not suit households needing temporary invitations, detailed audit logs, local recording, or finely tuned permissions for a single device. Check device-native sharing or a dedicated service for those needs rather than assuming Google Home offers equivalent controls.

Device control and access to a device’s history are different things. A basic Member may be able to use a supported camera’s live view, while Activity can expose camera events and other household history. Settings can enable broader configuration changes. Admin access is wider still, including history management and camera clip lending.

Do not assume every Member can unlock every smart lock, or that all cameras and locks expose the same controls. Capabilities depend on the specific device, integration, account, and app support. If access to a security device is the reason for an invitation, verify the actual controls shown for that device and choose history access separately from basic operation.

Google says children under 13—or under the applicable age of digital consent in their country—join as Members by default, with Settings and Activity disabled. Only someone with Parent permission in the relevant Family Link group can invite a child account. Child accounts also face restrictions that can include creating a home, managing some Digital Wellbeing controls, changing certain YouTube settings for Assistant devices, managing the Familiar Face library, and managing Sleep Sensing.
These limits are not a complete parental-control system. Google notes that some Family Link supervision tools do not work within the home context. Check Google’s current child-account guidance for the account and country involved.
Google Home Premium is separate from sharing
You do not need a paid subscription just to use the Admin and Member sharing model. Subscription-related home features may be available to Admins and appropriately permissioned Members, but sharing a home does not mean every Member can manage every subscription feature. Camera history, detection, and Gemini-related services also depend on the relevant product, plan, account, and availability. Check Google’s Google Home Premium page for current US plan details; prices and offerings can differ by region and change over time.
If you cannot find the invitation or permission controls
- Confirm the selected home and your role. The invitation starts by switching to a home; only an Admin can manage home members.
- Update Google Home and finish initial setup. App labels and available controls can vary, and an unfinished home setup may limit what you can do.
- Check whether you use a legacy Nest account. People who have not migrated to a Google Account may have a different sharing process. Google Home and Nest app workflows are not identical for every older setup. See Google’s Nest sharing guidance.
- Ask the invitee to check their access level. If they cannot manage settings, an Admin may need to enable Settings. If they cannot see home history, Activity may be off. A basic Member is not expected to have either automatically.
- Check account or organization restrictions. A Google Workspace administrator can turn Google Home on or off for an organization, organizational unit, or access group. This is separate from the household role and a home Admin cannot override it. The Workspace console path is Menu > Apps > Additional Google services > Google Home > Service status; changes can take up to 24 hours. See Google’s Workspace instructions.
- Allow for device and regional differences. Some features depend on device support, account type, country, or integration. A permission may exist even when a particular device does not expose the corresponding control.
Bottom line
Google Home’s Member role makes sharing more flexible than giving every invited person full control. Use Admin for true co-managers, basic Member for ordinary use, and grant Settings or Activity separately when there is a clear need. Treat home history as sensitive information, and remember that legacy Nest accounts and Workspace restrictions can change what a user sees.
