Google Home can now use a compatible smart button or switch press to start an automation. The feature arrived in the app’s automation editor on February 2, 2026, and Google later added ways to configure button actions on supported Matter switches from their device tiles. It is a useful new control option—but it does not make every physical button work with Google Home.
What Google Home’s button support means
The new automation starter is called “Switch or button is pressed.” Depending on what a device and its Google Home integration expose, you may be able to use a single press, a multi-press such as a double press, a long press, or the release after a long press. Google’s release notes introduced the events in February 2026.
A press is the starter—the event that begins an automation. The automation can then run available actions, such as switching lights, setting a supported light to a particular color or color temperature, or controlling another compatible device. The actions offered depend on the devices and integrations in your home; not every button can trigger every action.

This fills a gap in Google Home’s own automation editor. Before the update, people could use voice commands, the app, schedules, sensors, or manufacturer-specific controls, among other options. That does not mean button workflows were impossible elsewhere; the change is that Google Home added button presses as a native automation starter in its editor.

How to create a button automation
- Open the Google Home app and go to Automations.
- Create an automation or edit one you already have.
- In the starter or event section, choose the compatible button or switch and select the press event you want, if it is offered.
- Add any conditions you need, then choose the available devices and actions.
- Save the automation and test each press pattern separately.
Google initially said the new starter was available through the automation editor, not through Ask Home or Help me create. Google’s release notes have since described additional Matter-switch controls. App labels and screens can vary by phone and change over time, so use the dedicated Automations editor if a voice- or AI-assisted creation path does not offer the event.
Buttons, switches and ordinary wall controls are not the same
- Smart button: A wireless control designed to send press events. It may use Matter or connect through a vendor’s hub or service.
- Smart switch: An installed switch or dimmer that may expose extra press gestures as well as its normal switching function.
- Matter switch or controller: A device using Matter; Google Home support still depends on which events and controls its integration makes available.
- Ordinary switch: A conventional, non-smart switch does not send Google Home an automation event by itself.
Google’s July 8, 2026 release notes say users can configure button actions on supported Matter switches from the device tile, and that multi-button switches can appear in a unified tile. That is a later convenience alongside automation-editor starters—not proof that every Matter button, switch or gesture works. Matter can help devices work across ecosystems, but it does not guarantee that every device-specific event appears in Google Home.

Useful ways to put a physical button to work
- Bedside: A single press could turn off bedroom lights; another supported gesture could start a bedtime scene.
- Entryway: A press could turn on entry lights or a group of lights when you come home.
- Renting: A battery-powered button can add a physical control without replacing a wired wall switch. If you use smart bulbs, avoid cutting their power with a conventional switch: an unpowered bulb may become unreachable.
- Hands-free is not always hands-free: A button can be quicker than opening a phone and more discreet than speaking aloud. It can also give guests a control they can understand without learning a voice command.
These are examples, not guaranteed presets. Your device must expose the required gesture, and Google Home must offer the action you want for the target device.
What can go wrong
Google says features can take time to reach everyone, even with the latest app installed. Compatibility also depends on the button’s connection and integration, whether a hub or bridge is required, and the events the device actually reports. An early report on IKEA BILRESA buttons described a tester’s setup not working when the feature launched; that is a time-specific report, not proof that the buttons are permanently unsupported. If the button does not appear as a starter, first confirm it is set up and working in its manufacturer’s app, assigned to the correct Google Home, and connected through any required hub or bridge. Update Google Home and try creating the automation in the dedicated Automations editor. If the button appears but a gesture is missing, its integration may expose only some of the gestures the hardware supports.
If an automation saves but does not run, check that it is enabled, that no condition blocks it, that the button event is detected, and that the target device is online. Test a simple action—such as turning on one light—before building a more complicated routine. A successful button event cannot make an offline target device respond, and Google’s release notes do not establish that every button automation runs locally or works without an internet connection.

Should you buy a smart button?
A button is a good fit when you want tactile control for a repeated scene, cannot or do not want to install a wall switch, or would rather not rely on voice or a phone in a particular room. A smart wall switch may be a better choice for a main light that needs dependable conventional control, provided the wiring, installation and device are appropriate. More advanced platforms may suit users who need complex event logic or deeper troubleshooting.
Before buying, verify the exact model and connection path—not just a Matter or Google Home compatibility badge. Check whether Google Home recognizes it as a button or switch starter, which gestures are exposed, whether it needs a hub or vendor account, and whether the desired action is available. A double-press or long-press event can also add a delay while the system distinguishes gestures. Wireless buttons need battery maintenance, and an automation may not make the resulting device state obvious.

Use extra care with actions involving locks, garage doors or security systems. A button placed where visitors or children can reach it may trigger an action unintentionally; conditions and careful placement can reduce that risk. The feature itself is described in Google’s February release notes without a stated Google Home Premium requirement, but that should not be taken to mean every related device feature or AI tool is free of other requirements.
