Google began rolling out Gemini for Home in the United States on October 28, 2025, replacing Google Assistant on compatible Google Home and Nest speakers and displays. The rollout has since expanded to additional countries, but access remains staged and varies by account, language, device, and feature. Basic voice-assistant functions are included; some advanced features require Google Home Premium. Before opting in, note one important limitation: Google says a home that switches to Gemini for Home cannot switch back to Google Assistant.
What Gemini for Home changes
Gemini for Home is Google’s home-focused successor to Google Assistant, not simply the Gemini phone app running on a speaker. It brings more conversational voice assistance to compatible speakers and displays, alongside Gemini features in the Google Home app and, on supported cameras and doorbells, AI-assisted alerts and video tools. Ordinary requests still use “Hey Google”; Gemini Live can be started with “Hey Google, let’s chat.” Availability is not uniform across devices or markets. More flexible requests, with the usual AI caveat
Google presents Gemini as better suited to follow-up questions and less rigid requests: you might ask for meal-planning ideas, help troubleshooting a dishwasher, or an explanation of how to improve shower pressure. Those examples illustrate the intended conversational style; they are not guarantees of correct advice. Google advises users to check Gemini’s responses. Don’t treat generated repair guidance as a substitute for qualified help where electrical, gas, structural, or other safety risks are involved.
Smart-home commands and automations
Gemini is designed to interpret natural-language requests such as, “Create an automation to turn on the porch lights and lock the front door at sunset.” It still needs compatible devices, appropriate account permissions, internet connectivity, and supported actions. Check any automation it creates in the Google Home app before relying on it—especially one involving a lock, alarm, or other security-sensitive device. For critical actions, use clear commands and verify the result.

Gemini Live and camera features
Gemini Live is the back-and-forth conversational mode, rather than the basic voice assistant. Google lists it among Google Home Premium capabilities, and older speakers or displays may not support it. Premium features for eligible cameras and doorbells can include AI-generated event descriptions, Home Brief, camera-history search, and longer video history. The exact features depend on the plan, device, market, and rollout; they are not universal free upgrades. See Google’s Premium feature details.
Who can get early access?
The initial rollout was for selected existing Google Home users in the United States with compatible devices. As of August 2026, Google’s support information lists availability in multiple countries, including the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, Germany, France, Japan, Mexico, Spain, and Sweden. That list is not a promise that every feature works in every listed country: language, account, device, and phased rollout can affect eligibility. Check the current country and language information for your home.
Google has said Gemini for Home is coming to compatible Google and Nest speakers, displays, cameras, and doorbells, including many products released over roughly the previous decade. Relevant speaker and display families include Google Home, Google Home Max, Google Home Mini, Nest Mini, Nest Audio, Nest Hub, and Nest Hub Max. This broad support does not mean every model gets every feature: voice-assistant access, Gemini Live, camera AI, and Premium functions have separate requirements.

How to request access
- Update the Google Home app and sign in to the Google Account associated with your home.
- Open the app and tap your profile picture or initial in the upper-right corner.
- Go to Home settings, then choose Early Access.
- Follow the enrollment instructions shown in the app.
If Google Groups enrollment is requested or access is not working, sign in to Google Groups, open Settings, make sure “Add me to their groups” is enabled, and save. Google’s setup guidance has the current enrollment steps. Use the latest app rather than relying on an old version number: Google’s published requirements changed between launch and later help materials.
Requesting access does not switch the home immediately. The rollout is staged; Google says the app will notify eligible users when their home is ready. When the prompt appears, it may say “Introducing Gemini for Home”. Tapping Get started leads through setup and disclosure screens before the compatible devices in that home begin using Gemini.
Know this before accepting: there is no documented switch back
Google says that once a home upgrades to Gemini for Home voice assistant, it cannot return to Google Assistant. The change applies to the home, not just the person who enrolled or a single speaker, so other household members will experience the new assistant too. If a household depends on predictable commands, accessibility needs, or security-related routines, wait until you are comfortable making a one-way change and can check important routines afterward.

The basic assistant is not the same thing as the whole Gemini for Home feature set. If you only want voice control and general questions, you may not need a paid plan. Premium is more relevant if you use supported Nest cameras or want features such as Gemini Live, richer camera alerts, or video-history tools.

Google says second-generation Nest Aware was renamed Google Home Premium on October 1, 2025. Some Nest Aware subscriptions sold through third-party home-security partners retain that name, and account-specific benefits may differ. Gemini for Home voice-assistant Early Access, the Google Home app’s Public Preview, and the firmware Preview Program are separate programs. Joining one does not automatically join the others. If you cannot find the Early Access option, do not assume that enrolling in Public Preview will activate Gemini. See Google’s explanation of its preview programs.

Should you join?
- Consider it if you want more conversational requests, already use Google Home, and are comfortable reviewing AI-generated answers and checking automations.
- Look closely at Premium if you own compatible cameras or doorbells and would use its video-history or camera features. Compare the specific feature list with your device and local plan terms.
- Wait before switching if your household relies on exact voice behavior, has routines tied to locks or alarms, or would be troubled by losing the option to return to Google Assistant.
- Do not replace working hardware by default. Google has promoted support for compatible older devices; buying a new speaker is not a prerequisite for trying the basic assistant.
- Check older-device limits if Gemini Live or camera intelligence is the reason you want the upgrade. A device may support Gemini for Home without supporting those functions.
More natural interaction can be convenient, but it can also be less predictable than a fixed command. The assistant depends on supported devices, account settings, connectivity, and feature availability. Treat its interpretations as something to verify, not as proof that a lock engaged or a routine ran.
If Early Access or a feature is missing
- No Early Access option: Update Google Home, confirm you are using the Google Account linked to the right home, check Google Groups settings, and verify country and language eligibility. The rollout may simply not have reached your home yet.
- Enrolled but no upgrade prompt: Enrollment expresses interest; it does not guarantee immediate activation. Wait for the in-app notification.
- Gemini works but Gemini Live does not: Check whether your device supports Live and whether your account has the required Premium access in your market.
- A camera feature is absent: Check the camera model, Premium tier, region, app and device status, and whether the particular feature has reached your account.
- An automation is wrong or incomplete: Inspect and correct it in the Home app before depending on it. The request may involve an unsupported action or a device that is offline or not properly linked.
For camera history, remote control, and other connected-home functions, an internet connection and linked Google Account are among the basic requirements; individual tools can have additional conditions. Google’s Home Premium help covers plan management and feature requirements.
