Google’s March 17, 2026 update to Gemini for Home added more capable alarm and timer commands and shorter confirmations, while Google said common smart-home commands could have up to 40% lower latency. That figure is Google’s claim—not an independently verified result—and the features roll out through early access, so availability varies by account, region, language and supported device.
What changed in the March update?
The update applies to Gemini for Home, Google’s voice-assistant experience on supported Google Home and Nest speakers and displays. It is not a general update to alarms in the Gemini phone app. Google’s Google Home release notes describe three main changes:
- Faster everyday smart-home commands. Google said common requests such as turning on lights could see latency improvements of up to 40%. That is a stated maximum for a particular class of commands, not a promise that every conversation or alarm will be 40% faster. Google also said answers involving local information, such as weather units and local news, should be more accurate.
- Shorter confirmations. For tasks such as setting alarms and timers, taking notes, making lists and adding calendar events, Gemini is intended to respond more concisely—for example, with “Alarm set for 9 AM” rather than a longer explanation.
- More flexible alarms and timers. The update addressed recurring schedules and added support for event-based requests, multiple operations in one request, specified snooze times and questions about a timer’s original and remaining time.
Google’s release notes are the source for the speed claim and feature descriptions. They do not provide an independent device-by-device timing test, so actual results may differ with the command, network, device and rollout status.
Commands to try

For consequential alarms—such as one for medication, work or travel—treat an event-based request as convenient scheduling, not as a guarantee that the alarm will automatically track every change to an event. Specify the teams, date and time zone if needed, then check what Gemini set.

What happened after March?
The March announcement was the start of a series of changes, not the final word on alarm and timer performance. Google’s release notes later recorded these updates:
- April 28: Google said basic alarm, timer and reminder commands received more efficient processing. It also said smart-home controls could be up to 1.5 seconds faster.
- May 5 and May 11: Google described a Gemini for Home 3.1 upgrade and further improvements to complex, multi-step requests, recurring and all-day event handling, and alarm and timer processing. The notes also said an AM/PM alarm mix-up issue had been resolved.
- June 23: Google reported faster stop and snooze commands, better conversational tracking of active timers, and improved identification of the alarm or timer a user wants to change or cancel.
These are Google’s descriptions of its software updates; they do not mean every ambiguous request will be interpreted correctly. When several alarms or timers are active, check which one Gemini changed.

Who can use the features?
The release notes label the voice assistant as “Gemini for Home: Voice Assistant (early access).” Access can depend on country, language, home and account settings, supported hardware and rollout timing. Owning a compatible speaker or display alone does not guarantee that the update has reached your account.

To check, update the Google Home app, confirm your home’s country and language settings, and look for Gemini for Home early-access availability for your account. Google’s March 17 notes specifically expanded early access to all of Canada and added Canadian French; they cite Google Home app version 4.12 for exploring the new language support. The notes also list the United States among countries where Gemini for Home features were available. Those details do not establish availability in every country or on every device.

Do not assume Google Home Premium is required for the alarm and timer voice improvements. Google says some Gemini for Home app features require Premium, but that is not a blanket requirement for the March voice-assistant changes.

If it is not working as expected
- Responses still feel slow: The update may not have reached your account, or the request may involve a device, network or information lookup that takes longer. The “up to 40%” claim is not a guarantee for every command.
- The alarm time is wrong: Say the exact time, day and recurrence, including AM or PM. For an event-based alarm, make the event and time zone clear, then verify the result.
- Gemini changes the wrong timer: Identify the timer by duration or ask how many timers are active before canceling or modifying one.
- The event is not recognized: Try a fixed-time alarm instead, or provide more detail about the event. Do not rely on a sports-event alarm to follow schedule changes automatically.
- The alarm is too quiet: Alarm and timer volume is separate from media and assistant volume. Google says to adjust it in the Google Home app or with the device’s display controls; ordinary voice-volume commands do not change alarm/timer volume. See Google’s alarm and timer volume guidance.
- The feature is missing: Check early-access status, country and language eligibility, app version and account rollout before assuming the device needs replacing.
