A Harbor Breeze solar garden light can provide the enclosure, panel and 18650 battery holder for a compact Meshtastic LoRa node. The 2024 Harbor Breeze Mesh Node Hack shows how to fit RAKwireless WisBlock hardware into the light’s solar compartment. It is a useful reuse project, but the original lamp’s charging circuit and weather sealing are not automatically suitable for a continuously operating radio.
What the garden-light conversion actually does
The project repurposes the solar compartment of a Harbor Breeze outdoor light to house a RAKwireless WisBlock-based Meshtastic node. The light contributes an enclosure, a solar panel, an integrated 18650 cell holder and existing charging electronics. The radio hardware supplies the LoRa communications; Meshtastic firmware makes it a node in a low-bandwidth messaging mesh. An IPEX-to-SMA pigtail can connect the radio to an external antenna.
The project page described the light as costing about $15 when the build was documented. That is a historical figure, not a current price, and different models or revisions may have different internal dimensions and electrical parts. The January 21, 2024 Hackaday feature presents the build as a reuse concept, not a validated manufacturing design or long-duration field test.

Meshtastic uses LoRa radios to exchange small packets. Nodes can relay packets for other nodes, so a fixed installation may improve coverage for nearby users. Depending on its position and configuration, this garden-light build could serve as a fixed relay, an elevated node, a remote telemetry point or a local backup messaging point. It does not automatically provide Internet access.

- Suitable traffic: short text messages, location reports and basic sensor telemetry.
- Not suitable: broadband Internet, streaming, ordinary phone calls or reliable high-volume file transfer.
- Internet bridging: local Meshtastic messaging can work without Internet or cellular service. MQTT, dashboards or remote bridging require a separate Internet-connected gateway or device.
- Emergency use: it may be useful as a backup communications tool, but it is not a guaranteed emergency-service system.
Practical coverage depends on terrain, obstructions, antenna height and quality, regional frequency, configuration and the number and placement of other nodes. The earlier Hackaday overview of Meshtastic discusses its low-data-rate, relay-oriented use; this particular garden-light build has no verified range figure.
Why repurpose a solar light?
- Outdoor-oriented compartment: the solar section offers a compact housing intended for outdoor use, though that does not establish a waterproof rating.
- Solar input and battery holder: the documented light includes a panel and an integrated 18650 holder.
- Low-cost starting point: the historical price was attractive for a hobby experiment, but present availability and specifications need checking.
- Discreet placement: it can look like a garden fixture and may be mounted where the radio has a clearer path.
The project author notes that the lamp housing is less waterproof than the solar enclosure. Opening the unit or drilling for an antenna adds potential leak paths. Treat it as an outdoor enclosure that needs inspection and careful sealing—not as a rated waterproof case.
Parts and compatibility checklist
- Solar garden light with a compartment large enough for the intended board and wiring; verify the exact model before buying or cutting.
- Meshtastic-compatible RAKwireless WisBlock board and radio module. Compatibility depends on the hardware revision, supported firmware and regional band.
- 18650 lithium-ion cell appropriate for the charging system and device. Do not assume any cell will suit the lamp’s original electronics.
- Frequency-matched antenna and IPEX-to-SMA pigtail; connector, impedance and antenna band must suit the radio.
- Optional JST-PHR-2 connector for a plug-in battery connection.
- Silicone or marine sealant for penetrations, plus soldering equipment and a suitable drill or case-opening tool.
- Optional pole or antenna mount; the project provides a 3D-printable mount design. Assess the material and mechanical suitability for the intended outdoor exposure.
- Optional replacement solar charge controller, larger panel or battery if testing shows the original energy system is inadequate.
The project page lists soldering and drilling for the basic conversion. Its linked light listing, WisBlock starter kit and 915 MHz antenna example are references, not assurances of current stock, current pricing or universal compatibility.

- This solar balls We've simplified the installation steps and reinforced the ground stakes to make it easy for everyone, including seniors and children, to install without worrying about breakage
Choose the radio band before installing the antenna
Match the radio hardware, Meshtastic regional configuration, antenna and permitted transmit settings to the deployment location. The project links a 915 MHz antenna, a U.S.-relevant example rather than a global recommendation; European deployments commonly use a different regional band. Check local radio rules and the documentation for the exact radio before transmitting. A mismatch can compromise performance and may violate regional requirements.
Mechanical conversion: a cautious sequence
- Open the solar compartment. Remove its four small screws and lift the cover carefully so existing wires are not strained.
- Identify the battery wiring. Trace positive and negative before connecting anything. If using a JST-PHR-2 plug, verify its pinout against the board and battery terminals; connector shape alone does not establish polarity.
- Decide what to do with the lamp controls. The LED can drain the battery overnight. Disconnect or disable it if it is not needed. If adapting the existing button to switch the radio, verify the circuit with a multimeter rather than relying on an ambiguous wiring image. Confirm the switch interrupts the radio’s supply path, not just the lamp circuit.
- Plan the antenna route. An internal antenna avoids a new hole but may be shielded by nearby material. For an external antenna, select a location that keeps it clear of the solar panel and conductive structures and allows a suitable SMA bulkhead or pigtail route.
- Fit the WisBlock hardware. Check clearances, wire routing and access to connectors before closing the compartment. Do not force a board against the cover or pinch coax and battery leads.
- Connect and inspect. Attach the antenna before powering the radio, then connect the battery with confirmed polarity. Check for loose strands, shorts and pinched insulation.
- Seal and close. Apply silicone or marine sealant to the antenna penetration after cleaning and drying the surfaces. Reassemble the housing without trapping wires, then test for water entry before leaving electronics installed outdoors.
- Mount for coverage. Where practical, place the unit higher and with a clearer line of sight. Keep the panel oriented for sunlight and ensure the antenna arrangement does not prevent the panel from sitting as intended.
The power system is the main reliability question
The original build retains the solar light’s charging circuit for simplicity; its author does not present that circuit as the most efficient option. A lamp’s charger may have been designed around intermittent LED operation, not continuous radio loads. The panel, battery, charger and node therefore need to be treated as one system and checked together. The project does not publish verified panel output, continuous node consumption, battery-protection details or winter-runtime measurements.
- Energy balance: radio activity draws energy, especially during transmission. Shade, short winter days or several cloudy days can leave less energy available than the node uses.
- Unwanted lamp load: the built-in LED may remain on or activate at night and consume energy that the node needs.
- Cell and charger compatibility: confirm that the charger is appropriate for the exact cell chemistry and configuration. Do not assume the lamp’s solar output can safely be connected to a WisBlock charging input, or vice versa.
- Undervoltage: a depleted lithium cell may cause radio resets and can become a battery-safety concern. A later user comment on the project page reports dangerously low battery voltage in a setup where the panel was not connected to the WisBlock solar connector. This is a user report, not proof of universal behavior, but it is a reason to verify the actual charging path.
- Serviceability: a battery or controller that cannot be inspected or replaced conveniently is a poor choice for an unattended installation.
Before deployment, measure idle and transmitting current with suitable equipment, inspect the panel output in direct sun and confirm how the chosen charger protects the cell. Test the assembly through low-light conditions and check battery voltage rather than assuming that sunlight guarantees a positive energy balance. If charging behavior is unknown or the measured energy budget is marginal, replace the controller with a design matched to the panel and cell, or use a separate, appropriately engineered solar system.

Do not leave an improvised lithium charging setup unattended until it has been tested. Use a suitable cell, prevent shorts, and do not charge a swollen, leaking, hot or otherwise damaged battery. Add appropriate circuit protection where the design permits, and avoid an enclosure arrangement that traps excessive heat.

The project uses an external SMA connection. A vertical antenna and right-angle connector can interfere with keeping the panel flat, so check the full assembly before drilling. Keep coax bends gentle, use connectors suited to the frequency, and avoid placing the antenna against the panel or conductive structures. Seal any new hole and inspect seams and screw points as well as the cable entry.
Height and line of sight often matter more to a practical link than simply increasing nominal transmit power. Buildings, trees, hills and valleys can block or weaken signals; local node density and correct regional settings also matter. No universal distance can be promised for this build. After installation, assess reception with other nodes in the actual locations you intend to reach.

Configure the node for its role
After confirming the hardware band and antenna, install Meshtastic firmware supported by the specific WisBlock revision and set the region and channel to match local rules and the intended network. The project materials do not establish a current firmware version or a version-specific menu path, so follow the current Meshtastic and board documentation rather than copying an old setting by assumption.
Choose a node role appropriate to the job: a fixed relay is different from a portable client, and unnecessary relay traffic can affect a shared network. If the purpose is sensor telemetry, confirm the sensor interface and power draw as well as the radio configuration. Internet-connected functions require a separate gateway; the garden-light node alone is not an Internet router.

Troubleshoot by symptom
Battery does not recover charge
- Check for shade, dirt or panel damage and inspect panel output in direct sunlight.
- Disconnect the lamp LED and check for excessive node duty cycle or a degraded cell.
- Verify polarity, connector continuity and that the panel is connected to the intended charging circuit.
- Measure idle and transmit current, then reassess whether the panel and battery can support the load.
- Replace an unknown or unsuitable controller; stop using a cell that is swollen, leaking, hot or physically damaged.
Node crashes or will not restart
Look for brownouts during transmission, voltage drop in thin wires or connectors, low battery voltage, moisture, a loose antenna connection, firmware or watchdog behavior, and inadequate solar recovery after low-light days. Check supply voltage at the board under load rather than only at rest.

Water appears inside
Inspect the antenna hole, seams, screw holes and cable penetrations. Dry the surfaces before resealing with a suitable sealant, then test the enclosure before reinstalling valuable electronics. The project recommends silicone or marine sealant but does not provide a verified ingress-protection rating.
Radio coverage is poor
Check regional settings and channel configuration, antenna band and connection, antenna height, obstructions and the presence of other relay nodes. A sheltered internal antenna may perform differently from an external one; no range claim for the specific build is established.
Repurpose the light or build a purpose-designed node?
| Approach | Best fit | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Repurposed garden light | A hobby build where reuse, compact size and accessible maintenance matter, and the builder can solder, modify the enclosure and test charging. | Charger behavior, battery condition, enclosure revision and sealing may be uncertain. |
| Purpose-built enclosure and solar system | Unattended service, harsh weather, frequent radio use, added sensors or a need for a known-rated enclosure and predictable battery management. | More design work and potentially higher cost, but components can be selected for the actual load and exposure. |
| Mains- or USB-powered elevated relay | A site with dependable power where raising a node matters more than autonomous solar operation. | Requires a power route and does not provide the same independence from mains service. |
| Wi-Fi or cellular gateway | Internet connectivity or conventional network traffic is the requirement. | It solves a different problem from a local low-bandwidth LoRa mesh and may depend on network coverage or service. |
How strong is the project as evidence?
The project page marks the build completed and supplies instructions and files, but the available documentation does not establish a full wiring schematic, exact board revision, tested firmware version, charger characteristics, measured energy budget, waterproofing test or long-term environmental performance. That supports treating it as a proof of concept. A maintained hobby deployment is plausible after electrical and weather testing; months- or years-long unattended infrastructure calls for a better-characterized enclosure, charging system and battery-protection design.
