The technique is furoshiki: wrapping an item in a square piece of fabric, then securing it with folds and knots. You can use a purpose-made furoshiki cloth, but a square handkerchief, bandanna, or scarf may work just as well if its corners are long enough to tie. The wrap comes off without disposable paper, and the cloth can be used again.
How to wrap a gift with furoshiki
- Choose a square cloth. Set the gift in the center. The cloth needs to cover the item, with enough fabric at the corners to bring them together and tie; there is no single size that suits every gift. Nippon.com’s furoshiki demonstration shows the basic method and suitable alternatives to a dedicated cloth.
- Bring opposing corners together. Fold the fabric over the item, then bring the remaining corners toward one another. Adjust the folds so the gift is held snugly rather than leaving loose fabric around it.
- Tie the corners with a mamusubi. This basic square knot is a foundation of furoshiki wrapping. Nippon.com notes that untying it returns the fabric to a flat piece, ready to use again.
The result depends on both the shape of the gift and the fabric. A slippery or stiff material may be harder to fold and knot neatly, and an unusually shaped item may call for a different wrapping style.
Choose a style for the gift
Furoshiki is not one fixed knot. JAPAN HOUSE describes several wraps suited to different objects and occasions in its guide to furoshiki wrapping.

If a standard corner-tied wrap looks bulky or does not hold the item securely, choose a style intended for that shape rather than forcing the basic method.

What can you use instead of a furoshiki?
A purpose-made furoshiki is optional. Nippon.com names a handkerchief, bandanna, or scarf as possible substitutes, provided it is roughly square and large enough to cover the item with corners that can be tied. A cloth’s pattern and drape also affect how polished the folds look, so test the wrap before presenting the gift.
Why the cloth has a history beyond gift wrap
Furoshiki are nearly square cloths traditionally used to wrap and carry belongings. A Government of Japan article says the practice of wrapping valuable objects in cloth is said to have started in the Nara period (710–794), while broad public use came in the Edo period (1603–1867). It describes bathhouse use for keeping belongings together and use in travel; the custom later declined as lifestyles changed before seeing a revival. The government article connects the word to furo (“bath”) and shiki (“to spread”), reflecting the bathhouse context. It also describes the cloth as something used repeatedly. Reuse is one practical benefit, but furoshiki is also a versatile everyday way to wrap and carry things—not only an alternative to disposable gift paper.
