Kevin Cheung’s adjustable can cutter turns an aluminium drink can into a thin, flat piece of reclaimed metal with a more controlled process than opening the can by hand. It uses two circular blades in an adjustable frame to cut around the can’s ends; after a lengthwise cut, the remaining tube opens into a sheet. The edges are still sharp, and the result is craft material—not standardized sheet stock for construction or structural work.
What the can cutter does
Empty drink cans contain useful aluminium, but cutting one open with a knife or ordinary scissors can leave ragged edges that are easy to catch a finger on. Cheung’s tool guides the cut instead of leaving it entirely to hand pressure and aim. Hackaday described the design on December 2, 2024, as two circular blades mounted in an adjustable plastic frame, operating on a principle similar to a rotary can opener or pipe cutter. Hackaday’s project coverage explains the mechanism.
“With ease” here means a guided, repeatable cut—not an industrial process or a guarantee of speed. The tool is intended for thin beverage-can walls, not thicker metal.
How a can becomes a sheet
- Prepare the can. Empty it, rinse and dry it, and inspect it. A clean, round can is easier to guide than one with deep dents or buckling. This is practical guidance based on the cutter’s circular path; the sources do not establish a tested list of compatible can sizes or brands.
- Adjust the cutter around the can. Set the frame to hold the can while keeping the blades aligned. Do not force a damaged or uneven can into the tool.
- Cut around one end. Rotate the tool around the can so the circular blades make a guided cut at the circumference.
- Repeat at the other end. Once both ends are removed, the cylindrical wall remains.
- Make a lengthwise cut. Open the tube with a controlled longitudinal cut, keeping hands clear of the exposed edges. Hackaday describes this as the step that lets the cylinder unfold.
- Flatten and finish the piece. Press it gradually between smooth boards or use weights if it retains a curve. Trim distorted areas if needed, then deburr the edges with a file, deburring tool, or abrasive paper before handling it freely.
What material you get—and what it is good for
The result is very thin, reclaimed can aluminium, not commercially specified sheet metal. The can’s printing and coatings remain; seams, ends, and the opening area have different shapes and stiffness from the cylindrical wall. The sheet can also retain curvature, waves, creases, or damage from cutting. No alloy, thickness, strength rating, or flatness tolerance is established for this process.

That makes it a material for light-duty maker work rather than a substitute for specified stock. Possible uses include small decorative panels, stencils, templates, model-making, reflectors, craft shingles, embossing, and experiments in folding, riveting, or adhesive bonding. Electronics shielding can be an experiment, but the material’s coating, seams, and inconsistent contact mean it should not be assumed to provide reliable shielding. These are plausible applications for lightweight reclaimed metal, not applications demonstrated or performance-tested in the project coverage.
Do not rely on a can sheet for structural loads, code-regulated building work, weatherproof roofing, or any job requiring known alloy, thickness, strength, or repeatable dimensions. For those needs, buy suitable sheet metal with a material specification.

- STURDY CHROME CONSTRUCTION: Crafted from durable chrome, this manual can opener is built to last through years of daily use. It feels substantial in your hand and operates smoothly every time.
- EFFORTLESS & SECURE: Designed to be safe and easy to use, this smooth-edged can opener cuts efficiently without creating sharp edges. The ergonomic handles provide a firm, comfortable grip.
Is it safer than cutting a can by hand?
It is more controlled than improvised freehand opening, and the resulting edges are described as less jagged than edges from ordinary scissors or a knife. It does not remove the laceration hazard: both the blades and the newly cut aluminium can injure you.
Recommended Free Tools
- Wear cut-resistant gloves and eye protection. Keep fingers away from the blades and every cut edge.
- Work on a stable surface and keep the can from slipping. Use pliers or clamps to manipulate the cut material rather than gripping an exposed edge.
- Stop if the cutter slips or binds. Do not try to force it through a buckle or reach across a blade to recover the can.
- Treat the sheet as sharp until its edges are deburred. Deburring reduces risk but does not guarantee that an edge is harmless.
A small packaging safety cutter is not a substitute for this tool’s circular cutting action. For example, Slice describes its Safety Cutter for a different use case; it is not presented as a way to cut around a beverage can.

The creator’s video description says the body can be 3D-printed and identifies a 10-mm-wide M3 spacer as a blade replacement or substitute. That is a creator-stated design detail, not a complete, independently verified bill of materials. The available information does not establish print settings, filament, tolerances, complete hardware, or durability. A printed plastic body may crack, wear, or deform if overtightened; inspect it and the blade arrangement before use.

Choose a simpler or more precise alternative
- Scissors or snips: readily available and useful for trimming irregular shapes, but freehand opening can slip and leave jagged edges. Aviation snips are made for sheet metal but can distort very thin can stock.
- Utility knife: may make a controlled straight cut when the workpiece is secured, but is a poor choice for cutting around an unsupported can and brings puncture and slip risks.
- Commercial sheet aluminium: the better choice when the job depends on known thickness, alloy, flatness, clean surfaces, strength, or repeatability.
- Production cutting equipment: signmaking systems such as those described by Keencut target larger-scale work with rigid or semi-rigid materials. They are not direct, practical substitutes for a hobby can cutter.
Troubleshooting common problems
The cutter slips or wanders
Stop rotating. Incorrect adjustment, blade misalignment, a dented can, excessive force, or moving too quickly can make the cut wander. Remove the can without reaching over the blade, inspect the path, and readjust only if there is an undamaged section to work with. If the can is buckled or badly out of round, replace it rather than forcing the cut.

It is also convenient for you to hang or storage can opener with the hole on the handle, The compact and smart design makes can opener a fit for your kitchen drawers and cabinet.
- ▶EASY TO CLEAN AND HEALTHY: Can opener with new design, cut lid in sideways. The cutting blade will not touch the food and the lid can be put back into the can without falling into the food, which ensures the food clean. When clean the can opener, you just need to clean can opener under running tap water.
The blade binds
A crooked cut, excessive blade pressure, a folded wall, or debris can interfere with rotation. Back off the tool and inspect the can and blade area. Reverse direction only if the design permits it, and use pliers to stabilize the workpiece. Replace a damaged blade or spacer rather than pushing through resistance.
The opened piece is wavy or will not lie flat
A dented can, uneven lengthwise cut, strong residual curvature, or variations around the seam can leave the sheet distorted. Trim badly damaged portions and flatten gradually between smooth boards or under weights; avoid a forceful bend that creates a crease.
The printed body cracks or loosens
Stop using a cracked, deformed, or poorly fitting body. Print orientation, material, wall thickness, hardware fit, and clamping force can all matter, but the project references do not provide verified settings or a durability rating. Do not compensate for a poor fit by overtightening.
