First check whether your system is 5.1 or 7.1. In 5.1, the pair often called “rear speakers” are surround speakers: place them beside or slightly behind the main listening seat, not automatically on the back wall. In 7.1, there is a separate rear pair, which belongs behind the seats, in addition to side surrounds. For either layout, start near seated ear height, keep left and right positions as symmetrical as the room allows, and test before drilling.
Identify the speaker layout before choosing a wall
The numbers describe channels, not simply how many speakers happen to be in the room. Dolby’s speaker setup guide defines 5.1 as five ear-level speakers plus a subwoofer; 7.1 adds two ear-level rear surrounds. In 5.1.2, the final “.2” means two height speakers. That distinction changes where the pair behind a search for “rear speakers” should actually go.
| System | What the pair does | Usual location |
|---|---|---|
| 5.1 | Left and right surrounds | Beside or slightly behind the main seat |
| 7.1 | Side surrounds and a distinct rear-surround pair | Side pair beside the seats; rear pair behind them |
| 5.1.2 / 5.1.4 | Ear-level surrounds plus height channels | Surrounds stay in the 5.1 positions; height speakers go overhead or high on walls |
| Wireless soundbar kit | Manufacturer-specific surround channels | Use the maker’s placement diagram and calibration procedure |
Soundbar kits can use proprietary wireless links, hubs, and placement rules, so do not assume an AV-receiver layout applies exactly. “Wireless” also does not necessarily mean cable-free: rear units commonly still need power.

Put one speaker on each side of the main listening position. As a practical starting point, aim for about 90–110 degrees around the listener from the direction facing the screen: roughly beside the seat at 90 degrees, or somewhat behind it. The exact angle is a target, not a universal guarantee; room geometry and speaker dispersion matter. Dolby’s layout guidance and Crutchfield’s home-theater placement advice distinguish side surrounds from dedicated rear surrounds.

Match the left and right positions as closely as the room permits. If the speakers have adjustable brackets or swivel tweeters, begin by aiming them toward the main listening area. When a sofa is against the back wall, do not reflexively mount both 5.1 surrounds directly behind it. If possible, move the sofa forward enough to put the speakers at its sides. If that is impossible, try the side walls as far toward the seating area as practical; a back-wall placement may be a workable compromise, but it is not the normal 5.1 target.
Where to put 7.1 rear surrounds
In a 7.1 layout, keep the side surrounds beside the listening area and place the rear-left and rear-right pair on the wall behind it. Space the rear pair symmetrically around the listening area; do not cluster them near the center of the wall. Use as much practical width as the room provides without putting one speaker much closer than the other or forcing both into corners.

Keep the rear pair around the height of the side surrounds unless furniture, sight lines, or multiple seating rows call for a modest increase. Aim conventional direct-radiating speakers toward the listening area or generally toward the front of the room, using the cabinet’s dispersion and the bracket’s adjustment as your guide. A couch hard against the back wall leaves little separation between listeners and rear speakers; moving it forward is preferable where possible. If there is no room, consider whether the extra rear channels of 7.1 can be placed meaningfully.
How high should they be?
For ear-level surround channels, seated ear height is the best starting reference. Dolby gives approximately 3.9 feet from the floor as an approximate seated-ear reference, but actual seat and listener heights vary. In a dedicated, single-row theater, position the tweeter near seated ear level or only slightly above. In a general living room, roughly 1–2 feet above seated ear height can be a useful compromise when speakers need to clear furniture, avoid being blocked, or cover more than one seating row. This higher range is practical room advice, not a universal Dolby requirement.

Some manufacturer guidance differs because it addresses different room conditions. For example, Klipsch’s general setup guidance gives a rear-wall recommendation around six feet. Treat that as a manufacturer-specific option, not a rule for every system: furniture, listener positions, speaker design, and channel role all matter. Ordinary surrounds mounted too high can make effects seem detached from the screen action. Do not put them near the ceiling just because people call them “rear” speakers.
Height decision: one seated row with clear sight lines? Start at ear level. Furniture or several regularly used rows? Raise them modestly to improve clearance. Trying to create overhead effects? Use actual height channels in a 5.1.2 or larger layout, not elevated ordinary surrounds.

Which way should they face?
- Bookshelf or satellite speakers: Aim toward the main listening position if their mount allows it.
- Swivel-tweeter or in-wall models: Angle the tweeter toward the seating area when the manufacturer permits. Crutchfield’s in-wall and in-ceiling placement guide discusses aiming and installation considerations.
- 7.1 rear speakers: Facing forward, angling inward, or aiming at listeners can all work, depending on dispersion and bracket range. Try the options rather than assuming one fixed angle is best.
- Bipole or dipole surrounds: Follow the model’s manual. Their radiation patterns are designed differently from ordinary direct-radiating speakers, so generic toe-in advice may not apply.
- Angled elevation speakers: Use the intended wall or ceiling orientation and aim for the channel role specified by the maker.
Wide-dispersion speakers can sound overly pinpointed if aimed too aggressively. Listen and adjust; there is no single angle that suits every cabinet.

Spacing and symmetry
Keep the pair balanced around the primary listening position. A useful starting point is to space surrounds about as far apart as the front left and right speakers, as Crutchfield’s placement guidance suggests, then adapt to the room. Avoid placing a speaker right in a corner if another position is practical: nearby boundaries can strengthen reflections and change tonal balance. If one side is unavoidably closer to a wall or listener, prioritize reasonable physical symmetry before relying on receiver settings.

Atmos adds height channels; it does not move surrounds upward
Dolby Atmos layouts retain their ear-level speaker layer and add separate height channels. In 5.1.2 or 5.1.4, the 5.1 surrounds remain beside or slightly behind the listening position; the additional speakers go overhead or high on walls and should be aimed toward the seating area as their design allows. Crutchfield’s placement guide summarizes Dolby’s recommendation that a single overhead pair sit slightly in front of the listening position. High-wall placement may make sense for speakers specifically designed and angled for elevation use. Simply raising ordinary rear surrounds toward the ceiling does not turn them into Atmos channels.
Test the location before drilling
Wall mounting is harder to undo than moving a stand. Dolby notes that mounting in or on a wall limits how easily a room can be rearranged. Use a temporary test to catch bad locations before making holes:
- Choose the main listening position and mark its centerline.
- Use painter’s tape to mark proposed speaker centers and approximate heights on both sides.
- Temporarily place the speakers on stands, stable boxes, or shelves at about the intended height. Keep them secure; do not balance heavy speakers precariously.
- Run the receiver’s test tones or room-calibration routine to check that both channels play and that left/right levels and distances are plausible.
- Listen to pink-noise sweeps, effects moving from front to side to rear, and familiar material with clear surround activity. Check for one speaker that dominates, blocked sound, or effects that seem to come from above when they should sound at ear level.
- Adjust height, spacing, and aim one change at a time. Photograph and measure the final locations so the pair can be duplicated.
After permanent installation, run room correction again with speakers mounted and aimed. Calibration can help with level, timing, and room response; it cannot fully undo a poor channel location, severe asymmetry, or every reflection.
Choose the mounting method for the speaker and the building
| Method | Good fit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Wall bracket | Compact satellites, limited floor space, adjustable aiming | Visible hardware and cable; wall and bracket must handle weight and leverage |
| Speaker stand | Renters, heavy speakers, or positions still being tested | Uses floor space, needs cable management, and can be knocked over |
| In-wall speaker | New construction or a dedicated room prioritizing a clean finish | Permanent cut-in, structural and service checks, less flexibility |
| Purpose-built elevation speaker | High-wall placement or a room where overhead speakers are impractical | Costs more and may be unnecessary for an ordinary 5.1 surround position |
Stands preserve placement flexibility; wall and in-wall mounting reduce it. In-wall installation also requires checking for studs, wiring, plumbing, insulation, and fire blocking before cutting. For in-wall or in-ceiling speakers, Crutchfield recommends leaving 18–24 inches from an adjacent wall or ceiling where possible; treat that as a model- and room-dependent installation recommendation, not a universal surround-placement rule.
Bracket, wall, and cable safety checklist
- Confirm fit: Check the speaker’s weight, mounting pattern, cabinet depth, rear-port clearance, cable bend space, and the bracket’s permitted tilt and rotation. A bracket that fits the screw pattern may still be unsuitable for the cabinet.
- Choose sound attachment: A wood stud is preferable for a heavy bookshelf speaker or an articulating arm. On drywall, use anchors explicitly rated for the load and account for the extra leverage of a speaker projecting from the wall. For masonry, use appropriate masonry fasteners.
- Follow both ratings: Do not exceed the mount or speaker limits. Check that the bracket cannot rotate loose under vibration. Use a second person to support heavier cabinets during installation.
- Plan the cable route: Surface raceway is simpler to inspect and remove; concealed runs are neater but need suitable in-wall-rated cable. CL2 and CL3 are common in-wall speaker-wire ratings; select cable and routing appropriate to local code and the installation. Do not assume a speaker cable is suitable for carrying mains power.
- Check power for wireless units: Confirm outlet access, required hub or transmitter, system compatibility, and whether the maker allows the chosen wall-mount orientation.
- Reinforce ceilings: Ceiling tiles alone are not structural support. For a drop ceiling, Crutchfield recommends reinforcement such as plywood secured to structural cross braces.
- Inspect before drilling or cutting: Locate studs and check for electrical, plumbing, and other concealed services. If the route or wall construction is uncertain, pause and use a qualified installer.
Common problems and fixes
- Surround effects sound too loud or too close: Recheck that 5.1 speakers are not directly behind the seat by default, reduce excessive toe-in, and verify levels with test tones.
- Rear effects are weak: Confirm the receiver is configured for the actual speaker layout, both channels are connected, and the speakers are not blocked. A 5.1 system will not have separate rear-surround channels.
- One side dominates: Compare distance, height, aim, and nearby walls. Correct physical differences where possible, then recalibrate.
- Effects seem to come from above: Lower ordinary surrounds if they are mounted too high. Use properly configured height channels for overhead effects.
- Calibration does not fix the image: Room correction can adjust timing and level, but it cannot make a badly placed or severely asymmetric speaker equivalent to a correctly positioned one.
For construction work involving concealed wiring, uncertain wall cavities, high ceilings, or heavy cabinets, the installation details matter as much as the acoustic target. Verify structure and service routes before committing to a cut or mount.
