If a Dyson-compatible battery is swollen, unusually hot, smoking, leaking, or behaving erratically, stop using and charging it. If it is simply from an unfamiliar seller, do not install it until you can verify its maker, exact compatibility, and return route. A U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission warning documented a fire hazard involving one specific replacement battery sold for Dyson V6 vacuums; it does not establish that every third-party battery is dangerous.
What the CPSC warning actually covered
On January 4, 2024, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) warned consumers to stop using ZAUTNKN.INC lithium-ion replacement battery packs advertised for select Dyson V6 vacuums. The CPSC reported three fires and one smoke-inhalation incident associated with the packs and said they were not compliant with UL 1642 and were not authorized by Dyson. The affected product was advertised as 3,000 mAh and 21.6 volts fully charged, appeared on Amazon under ASIN B093Y1KK5Q, and was sold for $15–$40 at the time covered by the warning. Those details identify that product and that historical warning; they are not a current price or evidence of a universal recall of Dyson-compatible batteries. The warning is a concrete reason to take an unknown battery seriously, not proof that every aftermarket pack is unsafe. The important questions are whether the battery is what its seller claims, whether it is the correct part for your exact vacuum, and whether its maker and safety information can be verified.

Counterfeit, third-party, or simply the wrong battery?
These descriptions are not interchangeable. A battery can be non-Dyson without being counterfeit, and a genuine battery can still be the wrong fit for a particular machine.

Dyson says counterfeit machines can copy logos, serial-number stickers, and warranty cards. It lists poor finish, weak packaging, typos, uneven joins, scratches, and irregular edges as warning signs for counterfeit machines. These are useful clues, not a battery-authentication test: different branding can be legitimate on an honestly labeled third-party part, and convincing packaging does not prove a battery is genuine or safe. Why a poor-quality battery can be hazardous
A cordless vacuum battery is a lithium-ion pack, not just a set of cells in a casing. Potential failure points include mismatched or poor-quality cells, inadequate cell balancing, weak welds or insulation, faulty wiring or connectors, and battery-management electronics that do not properly control charging, discharge, current, or temperature. Incorrect voltage, misleading capacity claims, a damaged pack, or an incompatible charger can add risk. In a severe failure, a battery may vent, heat rapidly, smoke, or catch fire through thermal runaway.
These are possible failure modes, not a finding that all third-party batteries have them. The CPSC’s statement about UL 1642 applied to the named ZAUTNKN.INC packs. A printed UL mark or vague “tested to UL” claim is not enough to show that the exact battery model has independently verifiable, applicable certification. Ask for documentation tied to the specific product and manufacturer rather than relying on a logo or a seller’s general assurance.

Warning signs: when to stop using the battery
Stop using and charging a battery if it shows any sign of physical damage, unusual heat, or abnormal electrical behavior. Smoke, sparks, popping, hissing, a chemical smell, swelling, leakage, cracks, melting, or distorted casing are urgent warning signs. A pack that gets hot while idle or stored is also not safe to keep testing.
- Stop immediately for smoke, sparking, hissing, popping, leakage, swelling, unusual odor, or a casing that is hot or distorted.
- Stop and investigate if terminals are discolored or loose, wiring is damaged, or plastic appears melted.
- Treat repeated shutdowns during ordinary use, charging that never finishes, or a sudden severe runtime loss as faults to diagnose—not proof by themselves that the battery is counterfeit.
- If a vacuum displays a “non-Dyson battery detected” warning and you did not knowingly install a third-party pack, stop and contact Dyson rather than dismissing the message.
- Be cautious of listings that claim one battery works across unrelated models, cannot identify the manufacturer or part number, or provide no return address, warranty, or safety records.
Poor printing, typos, inconsistent model labels, an implausibly high capacity claim, and an unusually low price can justify further checks, but none proves a battery is fake or hazardous on its own. Likewise, marketplace reviews and a high rating do not establish the origin or safety of the pack.
Reduced runtime and, on some models, more than 12 flashing lights can indicate a battery issue in Dyson’s support guidance. They do not establish counterfeiting or prove that the battery is the only fault. A blocked filter, dirty brush bar, airflow restriction, charger problem, trigger fault, or other machine issue can affect operation. Confirm the exact battery before buying
Start with the vacuum, not a marketplace listing. “V11” alone is not precise enough: some V11 machines take a click-in battery and others a screw-in battery. Dyson says batteries are model-specific and advises owners to use the serial number or contact support to identify the right part. Dyson battery and spare-parts FAQs.
- Find the vacuum’s serial number. Use it with Dyson support to identify the machine and applicable parts. The general support route is Dyson Support.
- Confirm the complete model and regional variant. Do not rely on a family name such as V8 or V11 alone.
- Match the battery part number. Check it against the Dyson part listing or support information for your serial number; a seller’s “fits V11” title is not enough.
- Check the physical interface. Compare the connector layout, casing, mounting points, screw holes, and release mechanism with the battery installed in your machine.
- For a V11, distinguish click-in from screw-in. Dyson says the large red battery-release button identifies the click-in type; without that button, the machine may use the standard screw-in type. Confirm with the official part pages: click-in listing and screw-in listing.
- Troubleshoot before purchase. Follow the model-specific checks so you do not replace a battery when the actual cause is a filter, airflow, charger, or other machine fault.
What to do if you already bought a suspect battery
If it is suspicious but intact and at room temperature
- Stop using the vacuum and do not charge the battery while you investigate. Do not run it deliberately to drain the pack as a test.
- Save screenshots or a PDF of the product page, including the seller name and claims about “genuine,” “OEM,” voltage, capacity, compatibility, or safety marks.
- Photograph the battery labels, part number, packaging, and any damage. Keep the order confirmation and seller messages.
- Request a refund or return through the retailer or marketplace’s defective, unsafe, counterfeit, or materially misdescribed-product process. Report a suspected counterfeit to Dyson if it was sold as genuine.
- Keep the battery away from children, pets, heat, and combustible materials while you arrange the return or disposal. Follow the seller’s and carrier’s battery instructions before shipping; ordinary return packaging is not appropriate for a damaged pack.
If it is hot, swollen, leaking, smoking, or making unusual sounds
- Stop using and charging it. Do not touch or disconnect a hot, leaking, smoking, or visibly damaged pack.
- Keep people clear. If there is smoke, flame, rapid heating, or an indoor fire, evacuate and call emergency services; do not attempt a risky battery rescue.
- Do not puncture, crush, open, repair, freeze, or put the battery in water.
- Do not put it in household trash or ordinary curbside recycling. Contact your local fire department or hazardous-waste authority for handling instructions.
If a battery is not actively failing but needs disposal, use a battery recycler or hazardous-waste collection center that accepts lithium-ion packs; the CPSC specifically directed consumers not to put the affected packs in trash or general recycling. Dyson manuals also say to remove the battery before disposing of the product and to contact Dyson when replacement is needed. How to handle a marketplace purchase or report an incident
Keep the seller and listing details, not just the marketplace name. Listings can change, and a marketplace may host multiple sellers. Save the product page, seller identity, order number, photos of labels, and the exact claims you relied on. Ask for a refund through the applicable marketplace process and report the listing if you believe it is counterfeit or unsafe.

For a fire, smoke event, injury, or other dangerous product incident in the United States, report it at SaferProducts.gov. If the battery is damaged, hot, leaking, or otherwise hazardous, do not casually mail it back; ask the seller, carrier, or local hazardous-materials authority for specific handling instructions first. The CPSC named SaferProducts.gov as the incident-reporting route in its warning.

It can be legitimate for another company to make a compatible battery. That does not make it counterfeit, but it also does not establish its safety or quality. The practical difficulty is verifying who made it, what cells and protection circuitry it uses, whether safety records apply to that exact pack, and whether warranty, recall, return, and disposal support will be available later.

That is not the same as saying every third-party part automatically voids every warranty; warranty decisions can depend on the product and the cause of a failure. If provenance, model fit, support, and warranty continuity matter most, the lower-uncertainty route is a genuine battery from Dyson or an authorized retailer. Dyson page availability can vary, so check support or an authorized seller rather than treating an unrelated marketplace listing as equivalent.

If considering an aftermarket pack, insist on an identifiable manufacturer, exact part number and compatibility, product-specific and independently verifiable safety documentation, clear warranty and return terms, and a workable safe-disposal route. “OEM quality,” marketplace ratings, copied photos, a printed certification mark, and a large capacity number are not substitutes for that evidence. Do not open or rebuild a lithium-ion pack as a casual DIY project; a repair specialist should be able to explain cell matching, protection electronics, testing, warranty, and disposal.

Dyson’s official spare-parts pages may show different availability by page or variant, and prices change. For example, U.S. Dyson page results observed August 18, 2026 showed $99.99 for one V11/V15 click-in listing and $129.99 for a V11 screw-in listing; V8 listings showed $129.99, with differing stock signals. These are dated listing observations, not guaranteed current prices or a reason to buy without confirming the exact part.
