Fair pay for artists in the AI music era depends on where the money comes from: training on an artist’s music, listeners streaming a catalogue, or distributing a creator’s own AI-assisted track. The available options here address different parts of that chain. None of the stated terms establishes that every musician, performer, songwriter, or rights holder is paid in every use case.
What Fair Pay Means In AI Music
Separate three questions before choosing a service: whether an artist can opt in to AI training compensation, whether listeners’ subscriptions share revenue with participating musicians, and what a creator can retain from a track they make and distribute. Those are different payment models, so a percentage or royalty promise in one model cannot be compared as if it were a universal artist rate.

The stated terms do not specify the full calculation, eligible parties, or payment amount in every scenario, so check each service’s current terms before relying on a particular payout.

If You Are An Artist Considering AI Training
Check whether your music is eligible, who can opt in, how training activity is measured, and how monthly earnings are calculated. LANDR states that artists can earn monthly when AI models train on their music and can opt in or out anytime. Its stated royalty splits can route every payout to collaborators automatically, which may help when the relevant rights and split instructions are already clear.

If You Want Your Listening Subscription To Support Artists
A service’s revenue-sharing statement is more relevant than a creator royalty promise. Start by writing down who contributed what: lyrics, melody, performance, samples, and generated material. For example, a creator might draft an original melody and lyrics, use an AI system only for a backing arrangement, then record their own vocals. Another might generate the whole track from a prompt. These examples describe possible creative workflows, not confirmed features of the named services; check each vendor’s site for the tools and controls it actually provides. SOUNDRAW states that its beats come from music its producers write and record, and that users can download tracks or stems and distribute and monetize songs. Its stated 100% royalty term does not by itself establish how every contributor or rights holder is treated.

Keep Authorship, Consent, And Disclosure Clear
The U.S. Copyright Office says works generated entirely by AI are not copyrightable, prompts alone do not make someone the author, and only human-authored parts of a mixed work can be protected. Applicants registering a work with more than a minimal amount of AI-generated material must disclose it and describe the human author’s contribution. Do not imitate a real singer’s voice or use a cover, sample, or another person’s performance without the relevant consent and permissions. Spotify says vocal impersonation is allowed only when the impersonated artist has authorized it; it also supports DDEX AI disclosures in credits and announced an AI Persona badge for artist identities that may be AI-generated. What To Verify Before Paying Or Releasing
- Which people and rights are covered by the stated payment: artist, songwriter, performer, producer, or rights holder.
- How opt-in, revenue shares, royalty splits, and payouts are calculated, and whether the terms apply to your location and intended release.
- Whether a licence covers your exact use, especially for commercial playback, samples, covers, generated voices, and distribution.
- Which disclosures the distributor and destination platforms require for AI-generated or AI-assisted material.

For listeners, the clearest stated path is a catalogue-specific revenue share. For artists, distinguish opt-in AI-training earnings from royalties on your own releases.
