Prego has not become a smart-home company. Its Connection Keeper, made with the oral-history nonprofit StoryCorps, is a limited-edition tabletop recorder for capturing family conversations over dinner. It has electronics, but reported descriptions say it has no Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, AI, app-based recording, or smart-home integrations. The “smart-home tech” framing is a joke; the more accurate description is a deliberately low-tech recorder packaged with pasta and a prompt to talk.
What Prego actually launched
The Connection Keeper is a small, puck-like device designed to sit in the middle of a dinner table. Press its physical button to record conversation, stories, and laughter. The Prego–StoryCorps bundle was reported to include the recorder, Prego sauce, spaghetti, conversation-prompt cards, a USB-C cable, and instructions. It was presented as a complete dinner-and-conversation ritual, not as a standalone piece of home infrastructure. StoryCorps’ campaign page describes the partnership and the option to share recordings.
Contemporary coverage reported a $20 launch price on April 27, 2026, and a run of fewer than 100 units. Those are launch details, not confirmation that it can still be purchased: current availability has not been established. Fast Company’s report and other coverage described it as a limited-edition campaign.

Not in the usual technical sense. The device records audio, but available descriptions say it does not connect to a home network, pair with Alexa, Google Home or Apple Home, or offer remote control, automation, cloud sync, AI transcription, or a companion app for recording. It is better understood as a simple digital voice recorder with a branded dinner-table purpose—not a smart speaker, hub, or always-on home microphone.

How recording and sharing work
The reported workflow is intentionally straightforward: place the recorder on the table, press the button, talk—with the included prompts if helpful—and stop when the conversation is over. Then transfer the audio over USB-C. Only after that does a separate choice arise: keep the file, share it, or submit it to StoryCorps.
Secondary reporting says the device uses a 16GB microSD card and can hold up to eight hours of audio; those specifications are not independently detailed on the StoryCorps campaign page. They should be treated as reported specifications, not as a tested guarantee. Moneycontrol’s report describes the storage and transfer details.

StoryCorps’ role is more than supplying a name to the campaign. Its prompts encourage people to ask questions they might not otherwise ask, and its archive offers a route for preserving personal stories. But recording does not automatically make a file public or place it in the Library of Congress. Users decide whether to upload, and StoryCorps explains that privacy choices affect public access. Why a pasta-sauce brand would make a recorder
The product makes sense as brand marketing, even if it makes little sense as a smart-home launch. Prego is associated with family meals; pasta is an easy shorthand for gathering around a table. A recorder, sauce, spaghetti, and conversation cards turn that association into something people can handle and use. StoryCorps contributes a credible oral-history purpose, while the campaign speaks to screen-free meals and discomfort with devices that seem to listen constantly.

That contrast is central to the pitch: the Connection Keeper is described as manually activated and offline, without wireless connectivity or automatic cloud recording. It is closer to “anti-smart” technology than a new connected appliance. Still, offline does not mean consequence-free. Once audio is transferred, the person holding the file is responsible for storing, backing up, sharing, or deleting it.
Privacy still starts with consent
A physical record button is simpler than an always-on microphone, but it does not answer whether everyone at the table agreed to be recorded. Tell participants before pressing it, especially if guests, children, or other people who did not choose the device may be captured. People may also disagree later about keeping a recording that includes an argument, a sensitive disclosure, or a child’s voice.

Think of the steps as distinct decisions: record locally; transfer the file to a computer or phone; upload it to StoryCorps; and, depending on the choices made, allow public access or pursue archival preservation. Each changes who may handle or hear the recording. Before uploading sensitive material, review StoryCorps’ privacy options and get agreement from the people involved. Treat public sharing as difficult to undo in practice, even where deletion controls exist.
Could it be useful?
Its strongest case is as a novelty gift or a prompt to start a family-history conversation. A dedicated button may feel less distracting than taking out a phone, and the cards can help a group get past routine dinner talk. The device also avoids app setup and wireless pairing for recording.

Its limitations are real: a phone or ordinary recorder can capture audio too, and a recorder cannot make people comfortable or guarantee that everyone will be heard. Distance, overlapping voices, dish noise, and a television can all make a table recording harder to follow. There is no reported built-in transcription, so listening through a long file may take time. And because the device is a tiny limited-edition run, it is not a practical mainstream hardware choice.
If you do use one, announce the recording, make a short test and play it back, place it centrally away from direct clatter, and note the date and participants. After transferring the file, keep secure backups and agree on who may access it. For a formal oral-history interview, a dedicated recorder and carefully positioned microphone may be more appropriate; this campaign gadget should not be mistaken for professional recording equipment.
Alternatives depend on the goal
- Phone voice recorder: Convenient and already available to many people, but the phone brings notifications and other distractions.
- Dedicated handheld recorder: Better suited to people who want more recording control for interviews, though it requires separate equipment and does not come with the Prego dinner ritual.
- StoryCorps tools: StoryCorps offers an app for in-person interviews and StoryCorps Connect for remote conversations. Its participation page explains the options; these tools provide a way to use the StoryCorps workflow without the limited-edition hardware.
- No recording: Prompt cards, a phone-free dinner, or a handwritten family-memory journal can encourage conversation without making an audio file.
So the useful question is not whether Prego has entered the smart-home market. It has not, based on the product descriptions available. The question is whether a physical recorder and a meal kit will help a particular family spend time sharing stories—and whether everyone at the table wants those stories recorded.
