Dyson announced its PencilWash wet floor cleaner on February 19, 2026; it went on sale in the U.S. on March 17 at an announced price of $349. It is a cordless hard-floor washer built around a slim, lightweight handle—not a general-purpose vacuum for carpets, stairs or furniture. Dyson’s U.S. product page showed a promotional price of $249.99, reduced from $349.99, when checked on August 18, 2026; that offer may change.
What Dyson announced—and what the PencilWash is
Dyson describes the PencilWash as an ultra-slim wet-and-dry cleaner for hard floors. The product announcement was dated February 19, 2026, and Dyson said U.S. availability would begin March 17. The name refers to the approximately 1.5-inch-diameter handle, not the whole appliance: the floor head and water tanks are still recognizably those of a floor washer. The format is intended to make the machine easier to hold, steer and store. Dyson’s U.S. product page showed $249.99, reduced from $349.99, on August 18, 2026. That is a dated promotional observation, not a guaranteed or permanent price.

How the cleaning system works
Dyson describes a three-part process: fresh water is delivered to the roller, the microfiber surface agitates dirt, and the machine extracts dirty water and debris from the roller into its collection system. An eight-point hydration system feeds the roller, which Dyson says has 64,000 microfiber filaments per square centimeter.
Dyson’s phrase “fresh water on every turn” refers to continually refreshing the roller with clean water. It is a description of the cleaning mechanism, not proof that the complete process eliminates bacteria, disinfects a floor or prevents odors. The tanks and roller still collect residue and need cleaning after use.
The PencilWash has two hydration modes: a lower-water setting for lighter spills and faster drying, and a higher or more intensive setting for heavier messes. Dyson has not provided exact water-flow rates or drying times for each mode in the cited product information, so those should not be assumed.

These are manufacturer figures, not independent measurements. “Up to 30 minutes” is a maximum runtime claim; actual runtime depends on use and operating conditions. The 1,076-square-foot figure is simulated coverage based on one clean-water tank in low-hydration mode. It is not a guarantee of area cleaned per charge or per tank; Dyson says coverage varies with mode, use and cleaning routine. See Dyson’s announcement and its product details and care information.
Floor compatibility and limits
Dyson lists tile, vinyl, laminate, marble and sealed wood as suitable hard-floor types. The PencilWash is not a carpet cleaner, and its wet-cleaning format should not be treated as permission to wash every floor finish. Check the floor manufacturer’s care guidance and the PencilWash manual for restrictions before cleaning a particular surface.
The slim head can recline to a stated maximum of 170 degrees, and Dyson gives an under-furniture reach of up to 6 inches. Those are design capabilities, not assurances that the machine will fit beneath any sofa or cabinet. The head’s dimensions, furniture legs, cords and floor transitions can all affect access.

What “filter-free” does—and does not—mean
Dyson says the PencilWash uses a filter-free system, which it presents as a way to avoid dirt and sludge accumulating in a filter. That does not mean there are no dirty components or no upkeep. The roller, tanks, collection area, dock and drip tray can still retain moisture and residue.
Dyson’s care guidance calls for emptying and rinsing both tanks, washing the roller under running water, wiping down the machine and letting the roller air-dry before reinstalling it. Dyson recommends replacing the roller about every six months for optimum performance, with the interval depending on how much it is used. The PencilWash user guide is the place to check for detailed instructions on handling, charging and cleaning.
After a cleaning session
- Empty the clean- and dirty-water tanks and rinse them; do not leave dirty water sitting in the machine.
- Remove the roller and rinse it under running water.
- Wipe down the machine and the relevant collection areas, then let the roller air-dry before reinstalling it.
- Store the machine on its dock or designated stand and drip-tray arrangement.
Use only cleaning solutions allowed by Dyson’s instructions; do not assume a high-foaming product is suitable. A filter-free design does not eliminate the need to dry damp components or prevent odor if residue is left behind.

Cleaning solution: recommended is not the same as required
Dyson markets its 02 Probiotic hard-floor cleaning solution for wet-and-dry cleaners, including the PencilWash. Dyson describes it as non-foaming and non-toxic, and says it is designed to lift dirt and grime while being gentle on floors and safe around pets and children. Those are manufacturer claims, not a guarantee of suitability for every person, animal, floor or accidental exposure. Dyson’s product details recommend using its solution with each full clean-water tank for best results; consult the product instructions for use and safety information.

The PencilWash’s main point of distinction is its narrow handle and low stated in-hand weight, not broader cleaning capability. Independent reviews have highlighted maneuverability as a strength and cautioned that the lightweight format may suit quick cleans and smaller hard-floor areas better than long, heavy-duty sessions. Other wet/dry cleaners serve different priorities. BISSELL positions CrossWave models as cleaners that vacuum and wash hard floors, with some models also refreshing area rugs. Tineco’s FLOOR ONE range emphasizes larger wet/dry floor-washer designs and, on some models, smart sensing and display features. Those broader categories may suit people seeking more versatility or longer sessions, but model capabilities vary. Who is the PencilWash for?
The PencilWash makes the most sense if hard floors dominate your home and you often deal with small spills, food messes, muddy footprints or pet accidents. It is also a more plausible fit if low hand weight, steering around furniture, under-furniture access and compact storage matter more to you than tank capacity or all-surface versatility.
- Consider it for frequent, relatively quick cleaning on supported hard floors, especially where a bulky washer would be awkward to store or maneuver.
- Look elsewhere if you need one appliance for carpets, upholstery, stairs and hard floors, or if you routinely clean large areas without interruption.
- Compare larger floor washers if tank capacity and long cleaning sessions matter more than the PencilWash’s slim format.
- Keep a separate dry vacuum if your home has carpet or you need above-floor dust and debris pickup.
The trade-off is compactness and maneuverability versus capacity, versatility and value. At its announced U.S. price of $349, it was a premium, single-purpose appliance; the $249.99 price displayed on August 18, 2026, may make it more attractive, but is still a promotion-sensitive snapshot. Cleaning solution and replacement rollers also add ownership costs, although no reliable current U.S. prices for those items are established here.
