Usually, no—do not use eyeglass-cleaning liquid on a TV unless the manufacturer’s instructions for your exact model approve it. A clean eyeglass microfiber cloth is generally suitable. For liquid, the conservative default is a barely damp microfiber cloth with distilled water, never a direct spray. “Glasses cleaner” is not one standardized product, and some formulas contain chemicals that can damage screen coatings.
First, separate the cloth from the cleaner
When people ask whether they can use “glasses cleaner,” they may mean three different things:
- Eyeglass microfiber cloth: Usually appropriate when it is clean, soft, lint-free, and free of grit or chemical residue.
- Eyeglass spray: Not automatically safe for a television. Ingredients vary and may include alcohol, ammonia, solvents, detergents, preservatives, or polishing agents.
- Pre-moistened lens wipe: Also a default no. Its chemical formula and material may not be suitable for a large, coated panel.
Sony distinguishes a dry eyeglass-type cloth for the television’s exterior from microfiber guidance for the screen itself (Sony’s guidance). The cloth and the liquid should not be treated as the same product.

A television may contain glass, but the visible surface can also involve anti-glare or anti-reflective coatings, polarizing layers, protective films, and other model-specific materials. A liquid that is acceptable for an eyeglass lens therefore is not automatically compatible with a TV panel.

Manufacturers warn about several separate risks:
- Coating damage: An unsuitable chemical can cause haze, dull spots, discoloration, streaks, or permanent removal of an anti-glare layer. Samsung specifically warns that inappropriate products can strip its screen coating.
- Liquid intrusion: A spray or dripping cloth can send liquid into the bottom edge, bezel, vents, or electronics. LG warns that liquid entering the set can create electric-shock or fire risks.
- Scratches: Dust or grit trapped in a cloth, paper towels, rough fabric, or abrasive pads can mark the surface.
- Pressure marks: Pressing hard—particularly on an LCD—can disturb liquid-crystal alignment and leave temporary or persistent marks. Sony cautions against pressure.
- Residue: Waxes, detergents, and some lens products can leave a film that looks like clouding or streaking.
What Samsung, LG, and Sony currently say
The safest general advice is consistent: power down, use microfiber, avoid direct spraying, and check the model manual before applying chemicals.
- Samsung U.S.: Turn the TV off, let it cool, unplug it, use a dry microfiber cloth, and use distilled water on the cloth only if necessary. Its TV guidance says to avoid window cleaner, soap, wax, scouring powder, alcohol, benzene, ammonia, and acetone (Samsung U.S.).
- LG: Use a soft microfiber cloth, avoid alcohol and harsh chemicals, and never spray water directly onto the TV (LG OLED guidance). LG’s general page says no special product is needed for routine cleaning (LG general guidance).
- Sony U.S.: Start with microfiber, do not spray directly, and verify compatibility with the manufacturer before using a commercial chemical (Sony U.S.).
These instructions are not perfectly uniform worldwide. For example, a Samsung Gulf page dated June 24, 2026 permits distilled water or isopropyl alcohol at 70% or less for some Samsung screens, while Samsung U.S. warns against alcohol. Sony’s UK instructions include a 70% isopropyl-alcohol exception for certain BRAVIA 9 II models. Those are model- and region-specific exceptions, not universal permission. Your exact manual and regional support page take precedence.

The safest way to clean a TV screen
- Turn the TV off and unplug it. A dark, cool screen makes marks easier to see and reduces electrical risk.
- Use a clean, dry microfiber cloth first. Remove loose dust with light strokes. Do not use a cloth contaminated with furniture polish, fabric softener, lens chemicals, or grit.
- If a mark remains, use distilled water sparingly. Put a small amount on the cloth—not the panel—and wring it until it is barely damp and cannot drip.
- Wipe gently. Use minimal pressure, especially around the edges. Do not scrub back and forth aggressively.
- Dry the surface. Use a second clean microfiber cloth to remove moisture and streaks.
- Let the TV dry fully before reconnecting power.
Samsung, LG, and Sony all support this dry-cloth-first approach, with slight model and regional differences. If your manual says something different, follow it.

What not to use by default

Do not assume that “alcohol-free” or “ammonia-free” on a lens cleaner proves compatibility. Those labels remove some concerns but do not test the product against your TV’s coating.

Handling grease, food, and dried spots
Do not respond to a stubborn mark by using a stronger chemical or pressing harder. Try a fresh microfiber cloth, then a barely damp cloth with distilled water, working slowly and drying afterward. If the mark remains, stop and consult the exact model manual or manufacturer support page.
Sony’s general U.S. instructions give a narrow example for oil-marker ink: a cloth with a non-soap synthetic cleanser diluted to less than 1%, followed by a dry cloth. That is a specific support instruction, not a general recommendation for household detergent. Similarly, Samsung’s monitor page mentions a 50/50 distilled-water-and-white-vinegar mixture for a particular tougher-stain scenario; it should not be generalized to every television. Special surface instructions for Samsung Frame or Serif models, including melamine foam, also should not be transferred to ordinary OLED, QLED, Mini-LED, or LCD panels.

If you already used glasses cleaner
- Stop applying the product and turn the TV off.
- Unplug it and let the panel cool.
- Use a clean, dry microfiber cloth with extremely light pressure.
- If residue remains and the manual permits it, use a barely damp distilled-water cloth, then dry with another cloth.
- Do not polish, scrape, buff, or escalate to stronger solvents.
If the surface remains cloudy, discolored, streaked, or uneven after gentle cleaning, it may be coating damage rather than dirt. Do not promise that such damage can be reversed; contact the manufacturer or an authorized service provider. Whether damage affects warranty coverage depends on the applicable warranty terms.

For ordinary dust and fingerprints, usually not. A dedicated microfiber cloth and, when permitted, a small amount of distilled water are generally sufficient.

Commercial products can be considered only when the product explicitly identifies compatibility with your display type, the TV manufacturer does not prohibit commercial cleaners, and the liquid is applied to the cloth rather than the panel. WHOOSH! Screen Shine, for example, is marketed as alcohol- and ammonia-free for screens; its official TV collection lists products such as Screen Shine Pro at $19.99 and a 3XL microfiber cloth at $12.99 (official product page). A 950 mL refill is listed at $24.99 and is marketed for multiple screens and eyeglasses (refill page). These are optional products, not proof that a formula is safe for every coating, and a large refill is unnecessary for occasional cleaning of one TV.
