Often, yes: if you cover a song you did not write and plan to publish or monetize it, you need the appropriate licence for the composition. Making the cover with AI does not remove that issue. Permission to use a singer’s voice or likeness is a separate question, and a tool’s terms do not by themselves clear someone else’s song.
What Permission Does An AI Cover Need?
Think of an AI cover as two separate rights checks: one for the song and one for the voice. A song you did not write is still someone else’s composition when an AI system changes the singer. TwoShot’s cover guidance says publishing or monetizing a cover of a copyrighted track needs the right licence, and says to treat an AI cover like a traditional cover before commercial release. That guidance does not establish a blanket rule for every country, type of upload, or private playback. If you are making a file just to play on a phone or smart speaker, the facts here do not settle whether permission is required for your circumstances. Check the rules that apply where you live and the terms of the service where you plan to post or distribute it.
Whose Voice Is In The Cover?
Using your own voice avoids the specific issue of imitating another person, but it does not clear the composition. If you want the cover to sound like a real singer, get that person’s authorization before using their identity. - Choose a voice you have permission to use. For your own voice, use your own recording. For another person’s voice, get explicit consent; do not assume that a voice model being available in an app proves consent.

- Check the destination before uploading. A tool’s export option does not establish that a social platform, distributor, or other service has cleared the song or voice for your intended use. How The Tool’s Workflow Affects Your Rights Check

For a song you wrote, a prompt could say: “Use my original lyrics and melody; revoice this recording with my own vocal model; keep the phrasing and tempo.” For someone else’s song, do not treat a prompt such as “make this sound like [artist]” as consent or licensing. First establish that you may use the composition and the chosen voice; then follow the tool’s instructions for the inputs it supports. These are planning examples, not claims that a particular tool accepts those exact prompts or settings.
