Yes—a household sheet can reduce frost damage on a light, short-lived cold night if it covers the plant down to the ground on every side. It traps some heat rising from the soil, but it does not make heat: protection is limited in a hard or prolonged freeze, and a sheet should come off as temperatures rise.
How a sheet protects plants
On a clear, calm night, the ground loses heat by radiation. A cover helps hold some of that warmth around the plant and can reduce frost formation on leaves. The seal at ground level matters: a sheet draped only over the top allows much of that warmth to escape.
Iowa State University Extension explains that coverings trap radiant heat from the ground, but says they are generally no longer effective once temperatures fall below about 28°F. That is a guide, not a guarantee: wind, how long temperatures remain low, soil moisture, the plant’s hardiness, and how well the cover is installed all affect the result. (Iowa State University Extension, 2024: frost protection guidance.)

There is no single temperature rating for every sheet or frost cloth. Extension guidance gives useful ranges, but the material and conditions matter.
#1 Best Overall
- Product Features: Our plant covers are ideal for protecting all plant. Made from premium 1 oz/sq non-woven fabric, their durability and breathability ensuring both insulation against frost and facilitation of sunlight penetration for healthy plant growth
- Versatility: These covers serve triple duty as frost protection, snow protection, animal barriers, insect barriers, and sun shields, adaptable to various gardening needs, the versatile row covers promise a tailored fit for all horticultural necessities
- Usability: Users can cut the frost blanket according to the size of the plant, and then easily cover the plant blanket directly on the plant, lay the cover loosely over plants, or fix it with the help of hoops or frames, providing customizable protection
- Cold & Wind Protection: Shield delicate plants from wintry chills and harsh winds, safeguarding them from frost damage. Regulate sunlight exposure to prevent overheating, maintaining optimal growth conditions. Maintain stable soil temperatures
- Optimize Performance: Deploy the covers before sunset to harness residual warmth from the soil. Once morning temperatures rise above freezing, remove the covers to permit sunlight warming. Wet covers should be dried before reuse
- Iowa State Extension puts the limit for coverings at about 28°F; protection is especially unreliable when temperatures stay below freezing for five hours or more. (Iowa State University Extension, 2024.)
- Arizona Cooperative Extension says properly applied frost cloth can protect to about 30°F, while some fabrics may protect to about 20°F depending on their weight and weave. (University of Arizona Cooperative Extension.)
- Colorado State University Extension reports up to 10°F of protection depending on material and grade. In Fort Collins trials, plastic over a frame provided about 3°F to more than 6°F. These figures describe different materials and setups, not a guaranteed result from a household sheet. (Colorado State University Extension.)
- An Associated Press gardening report published in 2026 says row covers can raise temperatures around plants by up to 8°F; that does not establish what a particular sheet will achieve in a particular garden. (Associated Press, 2026.)
These figures are not interchangeable product ratings. A sheet may help during a light radiative frost, but do not rely on it to protect a tender plant through a severe freeze or a long stretch below freezing.
How to cover plants with a bedsheet
- Water normally before the cold night. Avoid letting plants enter the night drought-stressed, but do not leave foliage wet beneath a heavy cover.
- Cover before sunset. This helps retain warmth already stored in the soil rather than waiting until frost has formed.
- Keep the sheet off the foliage where possible. Use hoops, stakes, PVC, or another support to lift it above the leaves. Iowa State Extension recommends elevating coverings off plants.
- Bring the edges all the way to the ground. Secure them around every side with ground pins, clips, stones, or another safe weight so warmth from the soil is less likely to escape.
- Remove it as the day warms. Take an ordinary sheet or blanket off after temperatures rise above freezing. Arizona guidance says to remove sheets or blankets when the covered area reaches 50°F. Leave breathable commercial frost cloth in place longer only if its product instructions allow it.
Household sheet, quilt, or frost cloth?
All can offer some protection when installed well, but they differ in weight, breathability, durability, and ease of use. Household sheets and quilts are convenient for an occasional cold night; purpose-made frost cloth is designed for repeated garden use and comes in different weights and weaves.

| Cover | Protection and breathability | Weight and support | Ground seal, reuse, and daytime handling |
|---|---|---|---|
| Household sheet | Can reduce frost injury in a light frost; no fixed temperature rating. Fabric is generally more suitable for draping than plastic. | Usually lighter than a quilt, but a wet or heavy sheet can press on foliage. Hoops or stakes help keep it off leaves. | Can be extended and secured to the ground if large enough. Remove as temperatures rise; durability depends on the sheet. |
| Quilt or blanket | Can provide a cover, but no universal temperature rating is established for household bedding. | Heavier than a sheet, so support is especially important to avoid crushing plants. | May be difficult to secure close to the ground around plants. Remove as temperatures rise; repeated outdoor use depends on its condition. |
| Commercial frost cloth | Protection varies with fabric weight and weave. Arizona Cooperative Extension gives about 30°F for properly applied cloth, with some fabrics reaching about 20°F. | Purpose-made fabric is available in different grades; hoops or stakes can support it and reduce contact with foliage. | Designed for garden coverage and often reusable. Follow the product’s guidance on how long it can remain in place during the day. |
The stated temperature figures are extension guidance, not a guarantee for every product or garden. Whatever the cover, it must reach the ground and be secured to retain soil warmth effectively.

Can plastic protect plants?
Plastic held above plants on a frame can provide protection, but clear plastic should never rest directly on leaves. UF/IFAS Extension warns that foliage touching plastic is often injured because the plastic transfers cold to the plant; coverings protect more from frost than from extreme cold. Remove or ventilate framed plastic during daylight so heat does not build up excessively. (UF/IFAS Extension.)

What to do when a sheet is not enough
When a hard freeze is forecast, or temperatures are expected to remain below freezing for hours, a sheet is not dependable protection. For vulnerable plants, move containers indoors, use a cold frame or hoop tunnel, or provide supplemental heat only with equipment approved for that use. For long-term reliability, choose plants hardy to the conditions in your area.
