For most homes, a DIY smart lock means installing a manufactured retrofit or replacement lock—not building a lock from electronics. Choose a model that is confirmed compatible with your door, keeps a dependable way to enter when power or connectivity fails, and turns the deadbolt smoothly without pressure on the door. A custom motor-and-controller build is better suited to a test fixture, cabinet, or noncritical door than to the only lock on an occupied home.
Choose the kind of DIY project you mean
Install a replacement smart deadbolt
A replacement lock takes the place of the existing deadbolt. It can provide integrated keypad or other electronic entry options and is a sensible choice if the current lock is worn or incompatible with a retrofit. It changes the exterior hardware, however, and may require rekeying, permission from a landlord, or work to correct the door bore or strike.
Retrofit the inside of an existing deadbolt
A retrofit attaches to or replaces part of the interior mechanism while leaving compatible exterior hardware in place. It can preserve the existing key cylinder and appearance and may be easier to reverse. Level says its Bolt fits inside compatible deadbolt hardware and retains the existing exterior hardware and keys; check its compatibility guide before buying. A retrofit does not make an incompatible or worn lock suitable.
Build a lock from components
A motor, microcontroller, sensors, power supply, and software can demonstrate remote control, but operating a bolt is not the same as providing secure, dependable access control. Unless you can engineer and validate authentication, manual override, fault handling, battery recovery, and safe egress, keep a custom build off the only entry door to an occupied home.

Check the door and lock before buying
Most basic smart-deadbolt advice assumes a standard residential deadbolt. Do not assume a product fits simply because it can be mounted to the door. The motor must move the bolt through its full travel without binding, and the lock must fit the door and existing hardware.
- Record door thickness, deadbolt type, backset, and available clearance around the interior hardware. Common U.S. residential deadbolt backsets are 2⅜ inches and 2¾ inches, but measure yours.
- Identify whether the lock is single-cylinder or double-cylinder and whether it has an interior thumb-turn.
- Check for a mortise lock, multipoint mechanism, euro-cylinder, rim lock, narrow-stile door, interconnected lock, or building access-control system. These may not suit a standard retrofit or replacement product.
- Confirm the selected model’s fit using its manufacturer compatibility check. Yale likewise directs Assure Lock 2 buyers to verify their door before purchase: Yale Assure Lock 2 compatibility and options.
- If you rent or live in a managed building, check the lease and property rules before changing hardware. Reversible installation does not itself establish permission.
Make sure the door operates freely
With the door open, turn the key and interior thumb-turn. The bolt should move smoothly, without excessive force. Close the door and check that it enters the strike without pushing or pulling the door. Inspect for a loose strike plate, rubbing, sagging, swelling, or a warped frame. Correct mechanical problems before installing a motorized lock: friction or misalignment can cause failed cycles and can worsen with seasonal movement.
Retrofit or replacement?

A retrofit is a strong fit when preserving the exterior and existing keys matters and the current deadbolt passes the compatibility check. A full replacement is a better candidate when the existing lock is worn or unsuitable, or when you want an integrated keypad. Yale Assure Lock 2 is a replacement-style option with versions and options including keypad and Apple Home Key access; confirm the exact model and door fit on Yale’s product page.

Choose entry methods and connectivity around failure recovery
Entry methods
- Physical key: A useful fallback if a phone, account, battery, hub, or network is unavailable. Verify that the exact lock retains a key cylinder; not every electronic deadbolt does.
- Keypad: Useful for household members and guests. Check whether codes work locally without internet, whether you can create and revoke individual or temporary codes, and whether the lock limits repeated failed attempts.
- Phone app: Convenient, but its availability can depend on phone power, app and account access, radio range, and sometimes a vendor service or hub.
- NFC or Apple Home Key: Confirm support for the exact lock edition. Matter or Apple Home compatibility alone does not establish Home Key support.
- Fingerprint: Consider enrollment, dirty or wet fingers, injuries, and biometric-data handling. Keep another entry method.
- Voice control: Treat voice unlocking as an optional convenience with authentication implications, not as a universally safe default.
Understand the network path
Bluetooth commonly supports nearby phone control; remote operation may require a bridge or hub. Wi-Fi may provide direct network or cloud access, with added power and service dependencies. Thread is a low-power mesh network and requires appropriate Thread infrastructure. Matter is an interoperability standard, not a mechanical-security rating or guarantee that every platform exposes every feature.
For Level’s Matter-enabled locks, the company specifies a compatible Matter-over-Thread hub or controller for Matter connectivity and remote smart-home control. See its Level Bolt Matter product information and technical specifications. Before buying any model, establish whether locking, unlocking, status checks, and code management work locally during an internet outage, and whether remote access needs a hub, Thread border router, or cloud account. Confirm the features available in the specific platform you use, including Home Assistant if relevant.
Prioritize the features that matter at your door
- Reliable manual entry: A physical key or another tested recovery method should remain available.
- Mechanical fit and operation: Compatibility and smooth bolt travel matter more than a long feature list.
- Battery recovery: Find the battery type, replacement procedure, low-battery warning method, and any external emergency-power provision.
- Local behavior: Verify what continues to work without the internet, vendor cloud, or smart-home hub.
- Access management: Prefer individual codes or accounts that can be revoked over one permanent code shared by everyone.
- Security and support: Check account protections, update policy, access-log handling, local API exposure, and whether basic operation requires a subscription.
- Door and frame security: A smart feature does not strengthen a weak door, strike, frame, cylinder, or installation by itself.
Attribute ratings carefully. Level says Level Lock+ is BHMA Certified AAA and ANSI Grade 1/A; it says Level Bolt cannot be certified the same way because it operates inside existing deadbolt hardware, and that it tests Bolt to ANSI Grade 1 and BHMA A standards for strength and durability. These are manufacturer claims about those products, not ratings for retrofit locks generally. Details: Level Bolt specifications and claims.

Install a commercial smart lock safely
Use the exact instructions for your selected model. Do not force components or continue motor cycles against a binding bolt.

- Check permissions and condition: Confirm building rules, test the key and thumb-turn, and correct strike or door alignment issues.
- Remove existing hardware: Follow the product manual and keep any parts needed to restore the original lock.
- Install the bolt and assemblies: Align the tailpiece, adapter, motor, and housings exactly as specified. Tighten mounting screws evenly; do not distort the mechanism.
- Fit the battery and pair: Install the specified battery at the stage in the manual, then use the manufacturer’s app or platform setup process.
- Calibrate with the door open: Confirm the mechanism completes its full travel without contacting the strike.
- Test with the door closed: Verify smooth operation, actual bolt engagement, and accurate status reporting.
- Test recovery: Try each intended fallback—key, keypad, emergency power or local control—and write down the battery type and recovery procedure.
- Set up household access: Create separate codes or users where supported, and confirm how to revoke them.
For Level Bolt, the company’s published sequence is to remove the existing deadbolt housings and bolt, insert the Bolt, slide on the motor, fit the appropriate adapter, then reinstall the housings with the tailpiece aligned to the adapter. Follow its installation guidance for the compatible hardware.
Calibrate and test what the lock actually reports
Test first with the door open, then with it closed. A command sent to the motor is not necessarily proof that the bolt extended, and bolt position is not proof that the door itself is shut. Understand whether the model reports commanded state, sensed bolt position, door-closed state, or some combination. If the app says “locked,” visually verify bolt engagement during testing.

If a cycle fails, stop repeating it. Check manual movement, bolt-to-strike alignment, tailpiece or adapter position, mounting pressure, and battery condition. Correct the mechanical cause before recalibrating. Labels and menu paths vary by model and firmware, so use the current product instructions rather than assuming a universal app path.

The bolt turns by hand but the motor cannot move it
Door pressure against the bolt, a misaligned strike, an adapter or tailpiece out of position, excessive friction, overtightened mounting screws, a weak battery, or incorrect calibration can prevent motorized travel. Open the door and test again. If it works open but not closed, correct alignment rather than asking the motor to force the bolt.

The lock may be reporting a command rather than verified bolt position; the bolt may be only partly extended, the door may be ajar, or sensing may be absent or misconfigured. Check the bolt and door directly, then review the model’s status-sensing capabilities.

The lock is offline
Use the physical or other local fallback you verified during installation. Bluetooth, keypad, and Matter behavior during an outage differ by model and setup; do not assume offline operation from a general connectivity label.
The battery is depleted or access is lost
Use the recovery method documented for the exact model: it might be a key, accessible battery replacement, external emergency power contacts, or another entry. If there is no safe tested method, arrange a reliable alternate entrance before relying on the lock. Do not make a phone app the sole way into the home.
When building a smart lock from scratch
A custom access-control build needs more than a servo connected to an ESP32. It must be designed and tested as a complete mechanical, electrical, and security system.
- Mechanics: Specify actuator torque and full bolt travel; use robust mounting and mechanical stops; account for alignment and tampering; provide a manual override that works without the controller.
- Sensing: Independently detect bolt fully extended and retracted, door open or closed, motor stall, manual movement, and jams. Do not treat the command sent as proof of the resulting lock state.
- Power: Calculate capacity, manage motor current spikes and stalls, define brownout behavior and low-voltage cutoff, and provide safe battery access or emergency power.
- Authentication: Do not expose an unauthenticated network endpoint. Plan strong credentials, encrypted communication, rate limits, secure credential storage, revocation, and an update and recovery process.
- Failure behavior: Decide what happens on Wi-Fi loss, controller crash, jam, depleted battery, conflicting sensor readings, duplicate commands, interrupted firmware updates, or a lost phone or account.
- Egress: Ensure the mechanism cannot trap occupants or prevent rapid exit, and verify applicable building and fire requirements.
Use a custom system on a test fixture, cabinet, workshop, or secondary mechanism unless you can independently validate these requirements for the intended door.

Final pre-installation checklist
- Have I identified the lock type and measured the door, backset, and interior clearance?
- Does the manufacturer confirm this exact door and deadbolt are compatible?
- Does the door close and does the bolt move smoothly without the motor?
- Do I have permission to change the lock?
- Do I know how entry works when the battery, phone, internet, or hub is unavailable?
- Have I tested calibration with the door open and then verified real bolt engagement with it closed?
- Can I revoke guest access and recover from a lost phone or account?
- Have I recorded the battery and emergency procedure and confirmed the lock permits safe exit?
