No broad expansion of Apple Home or Matter accessory support was confirmed in iOS 17.6. Apple released the update on July 29, 2024, but its public release notes describe fixes—not new smart-home accessory categories. Apple had already introduced Matter support in iOS 16.1, so iOS 17.6 was not the point at which iPhones first became able to pair Matter devices.
What the iOS 17.6 claim means—and what it does not
The phrase “support for more smart home accessories” can describe several different changes: adding a new device category to Apple Home, improving pairing, exposing more controls for a device already supported, changing an API for developers, or fixing a compatibility problem. Those are not interchangeable. Without a specific Apple announcement or identified device list, the claim should be treated as speculation rather than a confirmed feature.
Apple’s iOS 17.6 release notes do not document a Home app feature or new Matter accessory classes. They list fixes involving audio, camera and AVFoundation, MarketplaceKit, and a Notes widget beta issue. Apple’s separate security-content page dates the release to July 29, 2024, and documents security fixes. The careful conclusion is that Apple’s public documentation does not confirm a broad Home or Matter expansion—not that no private, app-specific, or unlisted behavior could have changed.
Matter support predates iOS 17.6
Apple says Matter support arrived across its platforms with iOS 16.1, iPadOS 16.1, macOS Ventura, watchOS 9.1, tvOS 16.1, and HomePod software 16.1. In other words, compatible Matter accessories could already be added to Apple Home before iOS 17.6. Apple’s Home development overview and Matter documentation explain that Apple devices can use Matter pairing through the MatterSupport framework, including scanning an accessory’s setup code and provisioning it for Wi‑Fi or Thread where applicable.

A possible source of confusion is third-party developer documentation. Google’s iOS Home APIs release notes specify iOS 17.6 or later for Matter commissioning in a particular Google Home API integration. That is a requirement for that developer implementation; it is not evidence that Apple added new accessory categories to its own Home app in iOS 17.6.
“Matter compatible” does not guarantee identical Apple Home features
Matter is an interoperability standard, not a promise that every certified product exposes every control in every ecosystem. The relevant layers are separate: a device can have Matter certification, compatible firmware, Apple Home support, and particular controls in the Home app—and a limitation at any one layer affects what the owner can do.

- Device category: Lights, plugs, locks, thermostats, sensors, blinds, fans, vacuums, cameras, energy devices, and bridges do not all have the same platform support or feature set.
- Basic control versus advanced features: A light may turn on and off while vendor-specific scenes or settings remain available only in the manufacturer’s app. Camera functions, energy data, notifications, and automation options can also differ.
- Multi-Admin: Matter can let an accessory be shared with more than one compatible ecosystem, but each platform may present different controls. Pairing it with Apple Home does not guarantee identical behavior in Google Home or Alexa, or vice versa.
- Firmware and bridges: A manufacturer may need to update the accessory, or a bridge may be needed to expose older devices to a Matter ecosystem.
Google’s Matter guidance likewise distinguishes cross-platform compatibility from feature parity. A Matter label is useful, but check the exact model, supported device type, required bridge or hub, and the manufacturer’s stated Apple Home features.
What an iPhone update alone can—and cannot—do
Updating iOS can provide software support, but it cannot make an incompatible accessory Matter-certified, install missing accessory firmware, or supply the home network hardware a device needs. Depending on the product and how you use it, you may also need:

- A Matter-certified accessory with current firmware; the manufacturer’s app may be needed for initial setup or firmware updates.
- A compatible Apple Home hub for features such as remote access and automations.
- A Thread-capable border router if the accessory communicates over Thread. Thread and Wi‑Fi are different network options; Thread devices need suitable Thread infrastructure.
- A supported Wi‑Fi or Thread network, the correct Apple account and Home permissions, and an iPhone that supports the iOS version you intend to install.
Requirements depend on device, software version, and feature. Apple’s current compatibility guidance may describe requirements that changed after iOS 17.6; do not read those later requirements back into the 2024 release. For a specific product, check its current instructions and Apple’s Works with Apple Home guidance.

- Check the product packaging or manufacturer’s specifications for Matter or Works with Apple Home support, and confirm the exact model and required network or hub.
- Install any required manufacturer app and update the accessory firmware. Keep its Matter setup code available; some products also provide a numeric code.
- In the Home app, start adding an accessory and scan its Matter setup code. Follow the on-screen instructions to connect it to the appropriate network and assign it to a room.
- If the accessory is already connected to another ecosystem, use its Multi-Admin or “add to another ecosystem” process instead of assuming it can be set up as a brand-new device.
- For managing Matter pairings, Apple documents a Matter Accessories section under Settings → General. Menu presentation can vary by iOS version.
These steps describe the general Matter flow; a manufacturer’s instructions may add product-specific requirements.

If pairing or control fails
- The product appears unsupported: Check whether the exact model requires a firmware update or bridge. Vendor-app support alone does not establish Apple Home support.
- The QR code is rejected: Try the numeric setup code if one is supplied, and make sure you are using the code for the correct accessory and setup state.
- A Thread accessory cannot be found: Confirm the home has suitable Thread infrastructure and that the accessory, hub, and network are configured as the manufacturer requires.
- The accessory was paired elsewhere: Use Matter Multi-Admin to share it with another ecosystem, or follow the manufacturer’s instructions for removing an existing pairing. Avoid resetting until you have the setup code and know how to restore the existing configuration.
- Basic controls work but advanced ones are missing: This may be a device-type or platform feature limitation rather than an iOS installation problem. Check which features the manufacturer says are available in Apple Home.
- Remote access does not work: Check the Apple Home hub, its software, and the relevant iCloud and Home settings.
- It works in the vendor app but not Apple Home: The two forms of compatibility are not the same. Verify explicit Apple Home or Matter support for the model and the function you need.
Choosing an accessory without relying on the rumor
For an Apple-first home, look for a clear Works with Apple Home or Matter claim and verify the exact model—not just the product family. Then check the Matter device type, Wi‑Fi versus Thread, whether a hub or bridge is required, whether Apple Home exposes the functions you care about, and how firmware updates are delivered. Apple’s Works with Apple Home program is a distinct compatibility signal; a product advertised for Alexa or Google Home is not automatically compatible with Apple Home.

The trade-off is that app interfaces and feature support can differ, and a Thread product needs compatible Thread infrastructure. Native Apple Home support may offer a clearer path to Apple-specific integration, while some products still rely on a vendor bridge. Neither a Matter nor an Apple Home label, by itself, guarantees every advanced feature or long-term support policy.
Verdict
“iOS 17.6 may add support for more smart-home accessories” was a reasonable speculative headline before the release. After July 29, 2024, Apple’s public notes did not confirm a broad Home or Matter accessory expansion. Matter support was already present in iOS 16.1. Choose and troubleshoot accessories by their exact certification, firmware, network requirements, hub needs, and Apple Home feature support—not on the assumption that iOS 17.6 unlocked a new category.
