Cree’s 4Flow bulbs were a mid-2010s redesign of the household A19 LED bulb, offered as 40W- and 60W-incandescent replacements. Instead of relying on the large metal heat sinks common in earlier LED bulbs, Cree used a lightweight, shatter-resistant plastic housing and natural convection to move heat through the lamp. The result was a smaller, lighter bulb that Cree marketed for as little as $7.97—an important step toward making LED lighting affordable below the $10 price barrier.
The launch was historical, not a current 2026 product announcement. Cree’s archived releases give slightly different rollout dates and specifications, so the exact model number matters when interpreting power consumption, rated life, warranty, and fixture approvals.
What Cree launched
The product was a redesigned A19 LED lamp with a standard E26 medium screw base. It came in 40W-equivalent and 60W-equivalent versions, with soft-white 2700K and daylight 5000K options. Cree promoted the bulbs as dimmable, omnidirectional and suitable for exposed fixtures where a conventional incandescent-style appearance mattered.

The central technology was Cree’s 4Flow Filament Design. “4Flow” did not refer to a separate electrical current or a powered fan. It described the arrangement of LED circuit boards around the bulb and the airflow path created by openings in the housing. Cree’s announcement describes the design in its product release, while IEEE Spectrum’s contemporary explanation details the thermal-engineering trade-off.

Why the bulb was cheaper
LEDs are efficient, but the remaining electrical energy still becomes heat. Excess heat can shorten LED life and damage the driver, so earlier LED bulbs often used substantial metal heat sinks or central metal towers to conduct heat away from the emitters. That metal added weight, volume and cost.
4Flow used natural convection instead. As air inside the bulb warmed, it rose through the housing and drew cooler air through lower openings. The LED boards were positioned around the lamp so light could spread in multiple directions while air circulated through the structure. Cree said the airflow worked whether the bulb was installed vertically, horizontally or upside down.
This was more than a plastic substitution. The cost reduction came from several changes:
- Less metal and fewer conventional heat-sink components.
- A lighter and simpler lamp structure.
- Fewer LED emitters in the 60W-equivalent version—eight rather than ten, according to IEEE Spectrum—driven harder than the previous design.
- Manufacturing efficiencies as the LED market matured.
IEEE Spectrum reported that thermal management could account for roughly 25% to 30% of an LED bulb’s total cost. Removing much of that hardware helped Cree move a branded, broad-distribution LED bulb toward the sub-$10 price point.
Advertised specifications
The documents do not agree perfectly because they appear to cover related revisions or versions of the product. The following table separates the commonly reported figures rather than presenting every number as universal.

The archived specification sheet identifies the family as A19P, including model patterns such as A19P-40W-27K-B1, A19P-40W-50K-B1, A19P-60W-27K-B1 and A19P-60W-50K-B1. It lists 120V operation, E26 bases, CRI above 80, 460 or 815 lumens and a 25,000-hour rated life. It also describes dimming to 5% with select dimmers, damp-location use and enclosed-fixture suitability for the applicable models. See the archived specification sheet.
What “60W equivalent” meant
The wattage-equivalent label described brightness, not electricity consumption. The 40W replacement used about 6W and produced approximately 460 lumens. The 60W replacement used approximately 10–11W and produced approximately 815 lumens.

In other words, a 60W-equivalent LED was not a 60W electrical load. The comparison was with the approximate light output of a traditional 60W incandescent lamp.
Plastic, metal and glass: the trade-off
The plastic globe helped Cree reduce weight and cost while making the bulb resistant to shattering. The specification sheet described a lamp weighing less than two ounces. That was useful in exposed fixtures, locations where a dropped glass bulb could be hazardous, and applications where a heavy heat sink might stress a socket or fixture.
Plastic also gave Cree more freedom to shape the optical housing around the LED boards. The drawbacks were less certain. Plastic can age, haze or discolor differently from glass, and it may feel less premium in a decorative fixture. Ventilation openings also raise reasonable questions about dust, insects and moisture. The available sources do not establish independent long-term thermal-aging, flicker or reliability results, so it would be unjustified to claim that the plastic design was inherently more durable than glass.

Removing a metal heat sink did not mean the LEDs produced no heat. The design still depended on warm air leaving the bulb. A vented convection system should therefore not be treated as automatically suitable for every unusually hot, wet or enclosed location.
Did it really provide incandescent-like light?
Cree claimed an omnidirectional distribution and an ENERGY STAR-compliant light pattern. The A19 shape, filament-style arrangement and surrounding LED boards were intended to avoid the narrow, directional beam associated with some early LED replacement lamps.
That is a manufacturer claim supported by Cree’s product documentation, not proof that every fixture would look exactly like an incandescent bulb. The available sources do not establish independent photometric testing. In practice, fixture shade, globe position, color temperature and the viewer’s tolerance for LED appearance would still affect the result.
The 2700K version was the closer match for warm incandescent light. The 5000K version produced a much cooler daylight appearance and was better suited to workshops, utility spaces or task lighting than to a traditionally warm living room.
Launch price and market significance
Cree advertised availability at Home Depot for as low as $7.97. The exact package size and whether that figure represented a single bulb, promotional price or starting price are not clear from the archived material. One Cree release described online availability immediately and store availability later that season; another referenced a November Home Depot rollout. The safest description is a mid-2010s launch with inconsistent archived rollout details, rather than a single confidently established release date.

The price mattered because early LED adoption was held back by upfront cost. LEDs promised lower energy use and long life, but a premium bulb costing several times more than an incandescent lamp was difficult to justify for every socket. Cree’s strategy was to combine familiar appearance, broad light distribution, dimming, a branded LED platform and a price below $10.
Cree said the 40W replacement could use up to 85% less energy than an incandescent bulb over its rated life. That was a manufacturer calculation based on 6W consumption, an electricity rate of $0.11 per kilowatt-hour, 30,000 hours of life and three hours of daily use. Actual savings depend on local electricity rates, operating hours, service life and purchase price.

Readers should not combine figures from different documents without checking the model number. The later Cree announcement refers to a 30,000-hour life and a satisfaction guarantee. Another Cree release gives a 25,000-hour life and a three-year warranty. The A19P specification sheet lists 25,000 hours and a five-year, 100% performance satisfaction guarantee. Power figures also differ: one version is listed at 10W, while IEEE Spectrum and another Cree announcement report 11W for the 60W-equivalent bulb.
These differences may reflect product revisions, packaging, regional documentation or distinct versions within the same family. They are not a sound basis for claiming that every 4Flow bulb had one universal life, warranty or power rating.

- Check the model number. A label containing A19P and the complete suffix is more useful than the general words “Cree” or “4Flow.”
- Compare lumens. Look for about 460 lumens for a 40W replacement and 815 lumens for a 60W replacement.
- Choose the color carefully. Select 2700K for warm, incandescent-like light or 5000K for cooler daylight light.
- Confirm dimmer compatibility. “Dimmable” does not guarantee flicker-free operation with every wall dimmer. The specification sheet limits low-end dimming to select dimmers.
- Verify the fixture rating. Enclosed-fixture approval applies to the documented model, not automatically to every Cree lamp or every vented LED design.
- Separate damp from wet locations. A damp-location rating does not mean the lamp can be directly exposed to rain, spray or standing water.
- Check warranty and life claims. The relevant package or specification sheet controls when documents disagree.
How it compares with modern alternatives
The original 4Flow bulb may now appear mainly in legacy listings, and current availability should not be assumed. If the goal is to buy an equivalent modern lamp rather than study the historical product, alternatives can offer higher color rendering or lower per-bulb prices, though they will not be identical to Cree’s design.

- Philips 60W-equivalent A19: Home Depot listed a 2700K, 830-lumen, 11W dimmable bulb with a 25,000-hour life at $14.97, but the page also identifies that particular model as discontinued. It should not be treated as a dependable current recommendation without confirming stock and model status. View the listing.
