A maker’s attempt to build furniture while viewing the workshop through a Meta Quest 3 showed one practical advantage of mixed reality: plans can stay in view. It also exposed why a camera-passthrough headset is a poor choice around powered cutting tools. The experiment is an intriguing interface demo, not evidence that it is safe or practical to operate a table saw through a headset.
What the woodworking experiment tested
In a February 15, 2025 report, Hackaday described The Swedish Maker’s attempt to complete a furniture project with a Meta Quest 3 in passthrough mode. Rather than replacing the workshop with a virtual scene, the headset showed a camera view of the real space and allowed digital reference material to appear over it. The maker’s video is titled “I tried a weird way of woodworking”. The Hackaday account confirms the broad experiment and its reported drawbacks, but does not document a controlled test protocol or establish that the headset was worn during every cut.
What worked: keeping plans visible
The clearest benefit reported was displaying PDFs in real time. Having a plan or instruction visible without turning to a computer is convenient, especially during low-risk layout or assembly work. That is a useful reference-display idea, but it does not make the headset a measurement instrument: a drawing floating in view is not necessarily calibrated or registered to a board.

Digital overlays could also help with assembly guidance, part identification, checklists, or design review. Those are plausible applications, not results established by this furniture build. A separate augmented-reality electronics workbench example illustrates how overlays can support a stationary bench task; it does not establish suitability for operating woodworking machinery.

Why the workflow struggled
Depth perception and alignment
The experimenter reported unreliable depth perception. In woodworking, judging the relationship between a board, a fence, a blade, a stop, and the user’s hands is central to setup and cutting. A camera image can look convincing while still making physical spacing harder to judge. A display overlay may also fail to stay aligned with the edge or surface it is meant to describe.
Measuring still needs physical verification
The report also describes measuring as difficult. A virtual ruler or dimension shown in the headset should not be treated as a precision reference without documented calibration and registration accuracy. Verify stock dimensions, fence position, blade position, and cut allowances with ordinary shop tools, and confirm critical dimensions on the workpiece before powering a tool.

Screen delay and discomfort
The maker described a delayed view and nausea, but the report gives no measured latency figure. A delayed camera view can make movement appear out of sync and may leave a user responding to where a hand or tool was moments earlier. Discomfort or disorientation is itself a reason to stop; it can compromise concentration and judgment. The account does not quantify delay or establish a failure rate.
Attention and peripheral awareness
Even with passthrough active, a headset places a display between the user and the workshop. The display may not reproduce ordinary vision across the full visual field, and digital content can draw attention from the blade, stock, fence, guards, or people nearby. Dust, cords, changing lighting, noise, and moving equipment add demands that a stationary desk task does not. These are practical safety concerns, not measurements made by the reported experiment.

VR, camera passthrough, and optical-see-through AR are different
- Virtual reality replaces the physical scene with a virtual one. It is not an appropriate way to view a real workshop while operating real tools.
- Camera-passthrough mixed reality, the approach used in the experiment, captures the workshop with cameras and displays it on screens inside the headset, sometimes with digital content layered on top.
- Optical-see-through AR lets the wearer look directly through transparent optics while graphics are added. It may avoid camera-mediated viewing delay, but does not by itself solve distraction, limited display area, calibration, comfort, visibility, or protective-equipment compatibility.
Readers commenting on the Hackaday article suggested optical displays or glasses as alternatives to camera passthrough. Those comments are opinions, not controlled comparisons. No headset category should be assumed safe around machinery merely because its view is optical rather than camera-mediated.
Where a headset may be useful—and where it is not
Lower-risk uses
- Reviewing plans, reference images, or a 3D model away from powered machinery.
- Checking an assembly sequence or parts list while work is stopped and the area is safe.
- Planning a project, training in a fully virtual simulation without real tools running, or documenting a process from a safe stationary position.
Do not use it for active cutting
Do not rely on a camera-passthrough headset while operating a table saw, circular saw, miter saw, bandsaw, router, planer, jointer, drill press, or similar powered equipment. Do not use a virtual line as the sole guide for a cut or let an overlay replace a clear view of the workpiece and machine. A headset is not a substitute for guards, push sticks, eye or hearing protection, or ordinary awareness. This is a practical safety recommendation, not a claim that a particular regulator has issued a specific ruling about this experiment.

A safer way to keep digital plans handy
- Review the design and cut list away from active machines.
- Print the plan or place a monitor or tablet outside the cutting zone, positioned so it does not distract from the work.
- Measure and mark the stock with conventional shop tools, then verify dimensions physically before powering equipment.
- Remove the headset before powered cutting or routing. Use the machine’s guards, fences, push sticks, jigs, and dust controls as appropriate.
- Stop the machine before checking instructions or changing a setup. Recheck the cut list if the design changes.
- If recording the process, use a camera from a safe, stationary position rather than wearing a display that competes for attention.

The Meta Quest 3 project demonstrated a convenience—keeping PDF references visible—and reported substantial friction with depth, measurement, delay, and nausea. It did not establish precision, quantified latency, or safe performance around a table saw. Mixed reality may have a role in design review and stopped-machine reference tasks, but camera-passthrough viewing is not a sensible substitute for unobstructed vision during powered woodworking.
