For a home-theater receiver, connect its SUB/LFE OUT to the subwoofer’s LFE input with one shielded RCA cable. Set the subwoofer’s crossover to LFE, bypass, or maximum as directed by its manual, then let the receiver handle bass management.
For a stereo amplifier or preamp with left/right RCA pre-outs, use the subwoofer’s left and right line inputs and adjust the subwoofer’s own crossover. LFE and RCA are not competing cable types: LFE describes a signal or input function, while RCA describes the physical connector.
LFE versus RCA: the difference in plain English
LFE means Low Frequency Effects. In a multichannel soundtrack, the LFE channel is the dedicated “.1” channel carrying additional low-frequency effects. An AV receiver’s subwoofer output, however, may carry more than the discrete LFE channel: it can also include bass redirected from speakers configured as Small according to the receiver’s bass-management settings. KEF explains the distinction between the LFE channel and a receiver’s broader subwoofer output.
An LFE input on a powered subwoofer is normally a mono, line-level input intended for an AV receiver or processor. On many subwoofers, using this input bypasses the adjustable low-pass filter so the receiver controls the crossover. The exact behavior is model-dependent.

RCA is the familiar round coaxial analog connector. It does not identify a particular bass format. A subwoofer’s RCA sockets may be labeled LFE, Mono, Line In, Left, Right, or L/R. An LFE connection is commonly carried over one RCA cable.

The right connection for each system
| Source equipment | Subwoofer input | Who controls the crossover? | Recommended connection |
|---|---|---|---|
| AV receiver with SUB, SUBWOOFER, or LFE OUT | LFE, .1/LFE, or Mono RCA | Usually the receiver | One RCA cable |
| Stereo preamp with left/right RCA pre-outs | Left and Right line inputs | Usually the subwoofer | Two RCA cables |
| Stereo amplifier with a dedicated mono SUB OUT | LFE or Mono RCA | Depends on the amplifier and subwoofer | One RCA cable |
| Amplifier with speaker outputs only | High-level input, if supported | Usually the subwoofer | Speaker wire, not RCA |
| Soundbar or wireless system | Manufacturer-specific input or wireless link | System-controlled | Follow the system manual |
Best connection for an AV receiver or home theater
Use the receiver’s SUB OUT, SUBWOOFER OUT, LFE OUT, or SUB 1 jack. Connect it with one shielded RCA cable to the subwoofer’s LFE, .1/LFE, Mono, or designated LFE input. A single connection is normally sufficient because the receiver’s output is already a mono, bass-managed signal. Audioholics provides additional guidance on AVR subwoofer setup and bass management.
- Connect the receiver’s SUB/LFE output to the subwoofer’s LFE or designated mono input.
- Select the correct input on the subwoofer if it has an input selector.
- Set the subwoofer’s low-pass control to LFE, bypass, or its highest setting when the manufacturer says this disables or minimizes the internal filter.
- Set phase initially to 0 degrees and place the gain near the manufacturer’s recommended starting point, often around the middle of its range.
- In the receiver, enable the subwoofer and configure the speakers as Small where appropriate.
- Start with an approximately 80 Hz crossover, then run the receiver’s room-calibration routine. This is a common starting point, not a universal optimum.
- After calibration, verify the subwoofer trim, crossover, and listening mode with both movie and music content.
Why the receiver usually controls the crossover
When the receiver is handling bass management, it filters bass from the main channels and sends the appropriate low-frequency material to the subwoofer. Applying another adjustable low-pass filter at the subwoofer can create cascading filters. That may alter the response around the crossover region or remove more bass than intended, so do not set two crossover controls independently unless the manufacturer specifically recommends it.
Best connection for a stereo amplifier, preamp, or streamer
If your two-channel source provides conventional left/right RCA pre-outs, connect both channels to the subwoofer’s Left and Right line inputs. These outputs may be full-range, so the subwoofer normally needs to perform the low-pass filtering.
- Connect the source’s left pre-out to the subwoofer’s Left line input.
- Connect the source’s right pre-out to the subwoofer’s Right line input.
- Set the subwoofer crossover near the lower-frequency limit of the main speakers.
- Adjust gain so the subwoofer fills out the presentation without drawing attention to itself.
- Adjust phase for the smoothest, strongest blend at the listening position.
If the amplifier has a genuine mono subwoofer output, connect it to the subwoofer’s LFE, Mono, or manufacturer-designated input. Check whether the amplifier or subwoofer is intended to control the crossover.

When high-level speaker connections make sense
Use a subwoofer’s high-level input when the amplifier has speaker outputs but no usable preamp or subwoofer output. This is common with traditional two-channel amplifiers and some integrated amplifiers. REL describes high-level speaker connection and RCA low-level connection as separate methods; its connection guide shows the differences.
- Confirm that the subwoofer has a high-level input designed for speaker outputs.
- Follow the supplied wiring diagram exactly.
- Match left and right channels and positive and negative polarity.
- Keep the main speakers connected as instructed by the amplifier and subwoofer manufacturer.
- Never connect speaker-level outputs to an RCA line-level input.
High-level connection can be useful because the subwoofer follows the same volume changes and tonal signal as the main speakers. It is not automatically better than an RCA connection.

From an AVR’s mono SUB/LFE output, start with one RCA cable. Use the subwoofer’s LFE or designated mono input. Do not assume that two cables are required simply because the subwoofer has left and right sockets.
A Y-adapter can feed one mono output into both line inputs. On some subwoofers, summing both inputs may increase input sensitivity by approximately 6 dB or make the unit wake from standby more reliably. This can let you reduce the gain control, but it does not increase amplifier power, maximum sound-pressure level, or deep-bass extension. Use a Y-adapter only when the manual recommends it, the subwoofer has auto-on problems, or a particular input design requires both channels.
With stereo pre-outs, use two RCA cables because the source supplies separate left and right signals and the subwoofer is designed to sum or process them internally.

How to set crossover, gain, phase, and calibration
Crossover
With an AVR and LFE input, select LFE, bypass, or maximum as specified by the subwoofer manual. With stereo RCA pre-outs, use the subwoofer’s low-pass control. An approximately 80 Hz starting point is common in home theater, while stereo systems may require a setting closer to the main speakers’ low-frequency capability.
Gain
Begin at the recommended setting in the manual or around the middle of the control range if no starting point is provided. Run room correction, then check that the receiver’s subwoofer trim is not at an extreme. Raising gain is not a substitute for correcting a wrong input, disabled output, poor placement, or phase cancellation.
Phase
Start at 0 degrees. Play bass-heavy material and adjust phase for the strongest, smoothest transition between the main speakers and subwoofer. The best setting depends on speaker placement, subwoofer distance, room acoustics, and the listening position.
Calibration
Run the receiver’s room-calibration system after connecting the subwoofer and setting its gain. Check the resulting crossover and level rather than accepting every result blindly. Test both multichannel and two-channel material, because the receiver’s listening mode and source format can affect bass routing.
Does an LFE connection sound better than RCA?
Not inherently. An LFE input is usually the correct integration method for an AVR because it lets the receiver manage bass. Stereo RCA inputs are usually correct for full-range left/right pre-outs because they let the subwoofer apply its own crossover. The audible result depends far more on bass management, calibration, phase, placement, room acoustics, and available signal level than on the label printed on the cable.

LFE is also not limited to explosions. A receiver’s subwoofer output can contain the dedicated LFE channel plus redirected bass from the main channels. Conversely, “LFE+Main” is a receiver bass-management mode, not a cable type. Its exact behavior varies by model; it may send additional low-frequency content from speakers configured as Large or Full Range and can create overlapping or excessive bass. Denon documents LFE and LFE+Main as receiver-specific options.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do you need a special LFE cable?
Usually, no. A suitable cable should be shielded, securely terminated, and long enough without being pulled tight. For an ordinary home installation, a properly made coaxial or shielded twisted-pair RCA cable is generally sufficient. Cable branding, thickness, or the phrase “LFE cable” does not create LFE content or make a subwoofer more powerful. Audioholics discusses practical cable requirements for subwoofer connections.
For a long or electrically noisy run, use a well-shielded RCA cable or a balanced connection if both the source and subwoofer support balanced inputs. XLR does not automatically produce deeper or more powerful bass.
Troubleshooting weak or missing bass
- Check the input: confirm that the cable is connected to the subwoofer’s LFE/Mono input for an AVR, or the correct L/R line inputs for stereo pre-outs.
- Check the receiver: make sure the subwoofer output is enabled and the selected listening mode routes bass to it.
- Check speaker settings: speakers set to Large or Full Range may not redirect bass as expected. Review the receiver’s bass-management menu.
- Check crossover settings: avoid accidentally filtering the signal twice, or disabling the only active low-pass filter in a stereo system.
- Check gain and trim: confirm that the subwoofer volume and receiver subwoofer level are not set too low.
- Check phase and polarity: cancellation near the crossover can make the subwoofer sound weak even when it is working.
- Check standby: the subwoofer may not be receiving a strong enough signal to wake automatically. A Y-adapter may help if the manual supports it.
- Check placement: a room null at the listening position can remove bass. Try a different position before buying a new cable.
- Check the cable: reseat both plugs and test with a known-good shielded RCA cable.
Buying advice: choose compatibility before cable price
When buying or replacing a powered subwoofer, prioritize:
- an LFE/Mono input for an AV receiver;
- adjustable crossover controls for stereo RCA systems;
- high-level inputs if your amplifier lacks line-level outputs;
- output appropriate for the room and listening level;
- placement flexibility and useful room-EQ or app controls;
- a clear manual explaining how its LFE and RCA inputs behave;
- return policy and warranty.
For example, the SVS SB-1000 Pro includes RCA connectivity, speaker-level stereo inputs, and app-based controls. The KEF Kube 10 MIE provides RCA phono and LFE inputs, DSP processing, and a sealed design. These are examples of connection flexibility, not proof that either model is the best choice for every room.

Some REL models emphasize high-level integration for stereo systems and also provide LFE connections; consult REL’s input guide when evaluating that approach. A premium cable such as the REL Commodore .1/LFE cable is an available product, but its price should not be interpreted as evidence that it will proportionally improve bass. For most systems, correct connection and setup matter more.
Important exceptions
This guidance primarily applies to powered subwoofers with built-in amplifiers. A passive subwoofer needs an external amplifier or a compatible powered module.
Soundbars, wireless speaker systems, and all-in-one products may use proprietary wireless pairing, a 3.5 mm output, a dedicated digital connection, or a manufacturer-specific subwoofer. Do not apply the standard AVR-to-LFE instructions unless the system manual specifies that connection.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsInput labels are not standardized. On some models, the left RCA input doubles as LFE/Mono; on others, a dedicated LFE input bypasses the adjustable crossover or has separate level behavior. Check the manual for your exact model before assuming that LFE and Left are electrically or functionally identical.
