xTool’s MetalFab drew attention at CES 2026 by combining handheld laser welding with CNC laser cutting, cleaning, and marking. The demonstration was real, but the headline “cuts steel like paper” needs translation: the 1200W system’s advertised 10 mm carbon-steel result applies to optimized conditions, while xTool’s support table lists more conservative limits for several metals. MetalFab is a serious fabrication platform—not a small enclosed engraver—and installation requires appropriate power, gas, ventilation, fire protection, and operator training.
CES identified MetalFab as a smart laser-welding and CNC-cutting solution in xTool’s booth demonstrations. CES demonstrated the product; it did not independently certify xTool’s performance claims.

What xTool showed at CES 2026
The CES presentation showed the concept that makes MetalFab unusual: one ecosystem for CNC metal cutting and handheld laser welding, with related cleaning and marking functions. A user can cut a bracket or panel on the CNC table, move to welding for assembly or repair, then clean or mark the finished part.
That is different from a conventional desktop laser engraver. xTool’s F2 documentation describes its smaller machine as a non-metal cutter and metal marker; it is not designed to cut through steel or weld it. MetalFab uses a dedicated high-power laser source, cutting head, welding equipment, software, cooling, gas handling, and safety hardware.

CES footage confirms a hands-on demonstration, not a production test. Claims such as speed, precision, material utilization, “professional results,” or “eight times faster than TIG” remain manufacturer claims unless independently measured.
MetalFab is a modular fabrication system
The complete setup can include:
- an 800W or 1200W laser source;
- a CNC cutting table or gantry;
- a handheld welding and cutting unit;
- cleaning and marking accessories;
- camera-assisted positioning and control software;
- an air compressor and dryer or suitable gas supply;
- cutting and welding nozzles, protective lenses, cooling, extraction, and fire-safety equipment.
“Desktop” therefore describes accessibility and workshop positioning, not the footprint or behavior of a hobby engraver. The table, source, compressor, dryer, cooling, cylinders, extraction, and safe operating zone all count. Confirm the current US installation manual before buying; brochure material has indicated a 200–240V, 50/60Hz supply and up to 21A, but the exact requirement can vary by configuration.
What can it cut?
xTool’s published numbers differ depending on whether the page is describing an optimized maximum or a support-document recommendation.

Why “cuts steel like paper” is misleading
Maximum thickness is not the same as a recommended production thickness. Results change with alloy and grade, surface condition, thickness tolerance, pattern geometry, piercing, focal position, standoff, cutting speed, nozzle alignment, gas purity, and pressure. Thin sheet can still warp from heat. Thick carbon steel may require oxygen and pauses for cooling; xTool warns that continuous 10 mm cutting can overheat the system.

xTool lists compressed air, nitrogen, argon, and oxygen as possible cutting gases. In one example, 4 mm stainless steel is cut with approximately 0.6 MPa compressed air using the SaveGas nozzle, compared with 1.2 MPa nitrogen. That is an example—not a universal preset—and burr-free or dross-free edges are conditional.
What can it weld?
xTool rates the 1200W model for welding up to 5 mm stainless or carbon steel and the 800W model for up to 4 mm. That can suit thin sheet, brackets, enclosures, repair work, signs, and metal art, but joint fit-up, cleanliness, travel speed, focus, shielding, and operator control still determine weld quality.

xTool says a 20 mm carbon-steel weld can take 14 seconds versus two minutes for traditional TIG in its comparison. Treat that as a company test claim, not a guaranteed shop rate. Laser welding can reduce heat input and distortion, but it does not eliminate inspection, cleaning, fixturing, or post-weld testing.
Gas, accessories, and operating burden
For welding, xTool specifies nitrogen or argon above 99.99% purity for most metals and says titanium requires argon. Its listed welding range is 0.1–0.2 MPa and 15–30 L/min. Cutting may use compressed air, nitrogen, argon, or oxygen depending on material and thickness.
Budget and plan for the appropriate compressor, air dryer, SaveGas or double-layer cutting nozzle, cutting head, welding nozzle, protective lenses, cooling equipment, cylinders or plumbing, extraction, PPE, and fire controls. A handheld laser is not safe to operate beside combustible materials or unprotected bystanders. Use the current xTool safety documentation, a controlled work area, a suitable laser-welding helmet or eyewear, ventilation, and training. Painted, oily, plated, or galvanized stock can produce hazardous fumes; do not treat every metal surface as safe to process.

800W versus 1200W
The 1200W version offers xTool’s higher advertised cutting ceiling and 5 mm welding rating; the 800W version is rated for up to 4 mm welding and may be sufficient for thin sheet, repairs, prototypes, and maker projects. Do not assume the two machines differ only in speed. Verify the laser source, cooling, included table and nozzles, electrical service, software features, warranty, and service terms in the quotation.

Official xTool pages have shown materially different starting figures—about $4,699 on one landing page and $13,999 in another comparison context. Those are not one confirmed street price. Ask for the exact US configuration, included modules, freight, installation, taxes, gas and air equipment, and current promotion before comparing budgets.
A practical cut-to-weld workflow
- Import or prepare the design and secure the stock.
- Choose the current model-specific material and thickness parameters.
- Run a scrap test, checking focus, nozzle alignment, gas, speed, and pierce behavior.
- Cut the parts on the CNC table.
- Deburr and clean the edges, then fixture the assembly.
- Switch to the welding setup, confirm shielding flow, and make a test joint.
- Inspect penetration, porosity, discoloration, distortion, and dimensions.
- Clean, mark, or finish the part as required.
xTool’s documented software path for a cited professional cutting setup is Advanced mode → Cut → Professional. The published 800W handheld settings—100% power, 0 ms shutdown delay, 200 ms ramp-up and ramp-down, and 200 ms gas pre- and post-flow—apply only to particular equipment and materials. Use the current parameter table, not copied presets.
Troubleshooting common failures
- Incomplete cut: check focus, standoff, nozzle alignment, lens condition, gas pressure, speed, and actual thickness.
- Dross or burrs: verify gas type, pressure, focal position, nozzle, and speed.
- Warping: improve fixturing, change cut order, reduce heat accumulation, and pause between sections.
- Overheating: stop and follow xTool’s cooling guidance rather than forcing continuous thick cuts.
- Poor weld penetration: check joint fit-up, cleanliness, focus, travel speed, and shielding flow.
- Porosity or discoloration: inspect gas purity, leaks, contamination, airflow, and nozzle position.
- Reflective-metal problems: use procedures specifically validated for aluminum, brass, copper, or other reflective alloys.
The CNC cutter is designed for its integrated 800W or 1200W source; xTool’s support documentation does not make it a universal platform for unrelated xTool modules or other manufacturers’ welding units.

It is a poor fit for a casual hobbyist wanting a compact engraver, a renter without suitable power and extraction, a production plant needing validated unattended throughput, or anyone expecting a plug-and-play replacement for every TIG, MIG, plasma, waterjet, or industrial fiber-laser task.
MetalFab compared with alternatives
- TIG: better when welding expertise, thick assemblies, field portability, and low equipment complexity matter most.
- MIG: better for fast, heavier fabrication with less emphasis on a narrow heat-affected zone.
- Plasma: better for straightforward steel plate cutting where noise, kerf, heat, and post-processing are acceptable.
- Waterjet: better for cold cutting thick or heat-sensitive materials.
- Dedicated CNC fiber laser: better for production cutting, larger work envelopes, and validated repeatability.
- Smaller xTool engraver: better for wood, acrylic, leather, paper, and shallow metal marking.
- Contract fabrication: best when usage is occasional and power, gas, ventilation, maintenance, and safety costs cannot be justified.
Bottom line
xTool MetalFab is a credible, unusually versatile CES 2026 fabrication system, but it is not a paper-cutting appliance. The 1200W model’s 10 mm carbon-steel figure is an optimized maximum, while support documentation gives lower limits for stainless steel, aluminum, and brass. Its value is strongest when one workshop genuinely needs CNC cutting and laser welding in the same ecosystem. Before ordering, validate the complete configuration, installation requirements, gas and nozzle package, safety controls, service arrangements, and a sample cut on your actual material.
