Roborock’s Saros Rover really did climb stairs in a CES 2026 demonstration, using articulated wheel-legs rather than the chassis-lift system found on conventional robot vacuums. But the demonstration is not proof that it can safely and reliably clean every staircase in a home. Roborock described the Rover as a product in development, and as of August 18, 2026, had not announced a confirmed release date or public U.S. price.
What the Saros Rover demonstrated at CES
Roborock unveiled the Saros Rover at CES 2026 in Las Vegas. The unit was shown ascending and descending a staircase; the Associated Press event footage also observed that it moved slowly. That establishes a real public demonstration of stair-climbing movement, not a finished retail product or independently verified household performance. Roborock calls the Rover the world’s first robot vacuum with a wheel-leg architecture. That is the company’s positioning, not an independently audited industry-wide finding. Its announcement says it is designed to clean steps while moving between floors.
How its wheel-legs are supposed to work
Unlike a typical robot vacuum, which rolls on wheels and may raise its chassis to clear a threshold, the Saros Rover has two articulated wheel-leg assemblies. Roborock says the legs can move independently to lift or reposition the body as the surface changes. The intended result is a robot that can adjust its height and balance while negotiating stairs and slopes, rather than simply detecting a staircase and stopping at its edge.

Roborock says the system combines AI-based motion planning, motion sensors, and three-dimensional spatial information to scan surroundings and choose how to move. A company representative told AP that the robot measures stair spacing and height before selecting a climbing approach. These are manufacturer descriptions; detailed engineering specifications and independent validation have not been published in the cited material.
Which stairs and obstacles are supported?
The strongest evidence is that a prototype climbed and descended a demonstration staircase. Roborock and its representative have also described capability on ramps, slopes, curved and spiral stairs, and carpeted steps, as well as small jumps, agile turns, and keeping the body level through movement. Treat those as stated or demonstrated capabilities—not a guarantee for every home or stair construction.

“Handles obstacles” also needs a precise meaning. Stair mobility is different from identifying and avoiding toys, cables, clothing, pets, or people on a floor. The Rover’s stair demonstration does not show that it can safely negotiate a cluttered staircase or outperform another model at floor-level object avoidance.

Can it actually clean each step?
Roborock says the Rover can clean stair treads while moving between floors, but the available demonstration and announcement do not establish how thoroughly it cleans them. There are no cited independent measurements of tread coverage, stair-edge or corner pickup, brush contact during transitions, or debris scattering. The published information also does not answer whether the design works on open-riser stairs or how it handles projecting nosings.

Climbing is only one part of a useful whole-home routine. A household needs to know whether the robot can leave its dock, reach and clean the stairs, continue onto another floor, and then return to a dock or recharge point. The cited sources do not confirm how it manages docking across levels, battery life while climbing, water or dust capacity, or mop maintenance. Those practical details matter as much as the ability to mount a step.
What remains unknown—and why it matters
- Stair limits: No verified maximum riser height, tread depth, slope, or supported geometry is specified in the cited information.
- Fall prevention: The announcement does not establish redundant cliff detection, safety behavior after a failed climb, emergency-stop controls, or safe unattended operation around people and pets.
- Speed and coverage: AP observed slow movement at CES. That may suit careful climbing, but it leaves open how long a multistory cleaning cycle would take.
- Durability and service: Legs and actuators add mechanical complexity compared with a conventional wheeled vacuum. Maintenance needs, replacement-part costs, repairability, warranty terms, and ingress protection are not confirmed.
- Home conditions: Loose rugs, low light, narrow landings, polished surfaces, uneven carpet transitions, clutter, and tight turns could all make real-world use more demanding than a controlled demonstration.
A trade-show climb is a meaningful proof of motion, but not proof of safe, reliable, unsupervised use on the varied stairs found in homes.

Is the Roborock Saros Rover available to buy?

Should multistory homeowners wait?
If your main need is a robot that moves between floors and cleans stair treads without being carried, the Rover is the development to watch—but there is not enough evidence to buy on that promise today. Wait for a retail model, published limits and safety guidance, and credible testing in homes with varied stairs. If you need dependable stair cleaning now, a separate handheld or canister vacuum is the practical option.
If your priority is cleaning ordinary floors, mopping, or crossing thresholds, a current floor robot may suit you, but it will not replace manual stair cleaning merely because it belongs to the Saros family. Choose based on the job you need done, and verify the exact model’s features and price on the manufacturer’s current listing.
