Officially, no. Miele says not to refill a PowerDisk with powder detergent, not to put liquid into the AutoDos system, and warns that refilling can invalidate the appliance warranty. The supported alternative is to deactivate AutoDos and use the dishwasher’s ordinary detergent compartment. Although some owners report modifying empty disks, that is an unofficial DIY experiment—not a Miele-approved refill method.
How Miele PowerDisk and AutoDos work
PowerDisk is a proprietary powder-detergent cartridge for Miele household dishwashers fitted with AutoDos. The cartridge is designed to dose detergent automatically over multiple cycles. Miele says one 400 g U.S. PowerDisk provides approximately 20 cycles, although actual consumption depends on the dishwasher, program, dosage settings and usage.
The cartridge contains dry detergent granules. Its mechanical fit, lid, seals and dispensing path are part of the AutoDos system, so an empty plastic disk should not be treated as a universally refillable container. Miele instructs users to remove an empty disk and install a new one. It also warns that a disk containing only about 1 g of residue may not contain enough detergent for the next cycle.

Miele’s operating instructions state that the PowerDisk must not be refilled with powder detergent and that doing so will invalidate the warranty. The same instructions say not to put liquid into the AutoDos system. These are manufacturer instructions, not a statement that every repair or claim will automatically be refused in every country; warranty terms and consumer-protection law vary by jurisdiction.

Read the manual for your exact dishwasher model before handling the dispenser. Miele has documented differences between AutoDos 1.0 and AutoDos 2.0, and G7000-series models may not have identical hardware or menu labels.
Can you physically refill an empty disk?
Some owners report opening empty disks, adding ordinary dishwasher powder and fitting modified or 3D-printed lids. Those reports show that a physical workaround may be possible; they do not establish that the method is safe, compatible, correctly dosed or warranty-protected.
Three separate questions matter:
- Can the plastic be modified? Community reports indicate that some users have done this.
- Will the dishwasher accept it? It may operate if the disk remains mechanically compatible, sits flush and allows the AutoDos lid to close and seal. This is not guaranteed across models.
- Is it approved? No. Miele’s written instructions prohibit refilling.
There is also no evidence here that ordinary powders—including any particular brand—are chemically equivalent to PowerDisk detergent. A disk that appears to work for a few cycles is not proof of equivalent cleaning, dosing accuracy or long-term reliability.

The supported alternative: turn off AutoDos
If your goal is to use less expensive detergent or choose a different formulation, the manufacturer-supported workaround is manual dispensing:
- Open the dishwasher’s Options or Extra options controls.
- Deactivate AutoDos.
- Place compatible dishwasher detergent in the normal door dispenser.
- Use the quantity stated on the detergent packaging and in your model’s operating instructions.
- Confirm that AutoDos is off before starting the program.
Miele support specifically describes continuing to use the dishwasher by deactivating AutoDos and dispensing detergent through the conventional compartment. One Miele manual gives an example of one detergent tab or approximately 20–30 ml of detergent, depending on soil level. That is not a universal dose: detergent concentration, program, water hardness, load size and model all affect the correct amount.
Depending on your exact manual, compatible conventional detergent may include powder or tablets. Do not assume that every detergent type is suitable for every model, and never pour liquid detergent into AutoDos itself.

Miele guidance on deactivating AutoDos
Why DIY refilling can fail
- Warranty risk: Miele expressly warns that refilling can invalidate the warranty.
- Moisture and clumping: Damp powder can bridge or block the dispensing path. AutoDos components and detergent must remain dry.
- Incorrect dosing: Ordinary powder may not flow or dispense like the original formulation, causing poor cleaning, residue, filming or oversudsing.
- Leaks and spills: An improvised lid or seal may not close correctly, allowing powder into the housing or onto surrounding surfaces.
- Fault messages: The dishwasher may detect incorrect seating, a dispensing obstruction or another AutoDos problem.
- Service complications: A modified cartridge can make diagnosis more difficult and may affect how a service provider assesses the problem.
- Detection limitations: AutoDos may detect the disk’s presence or dispensing condition; that does not mean it approves the refill or its contents.
Do not operate the dishwasher with the AutoDos lid open. Clean spilled detergent promptly, avoid inhaling or ingesting it, and keep it away from children.
If AutoDos shows an error
If a disk has been removed, reinserted or modified and AutoDos stops working, do not force the mechanism. First:
- Check that the disk is the correct type and sits evenly and flush.
- Check the holder and any arrows or viewing-window alignment specified for your model.
- Make sure the AutoDos lid closes tightly and reaches its locked position.
- Inspect the housing, holder and fill channel for spilled or clumped detergent.
- Follow the cleaning procedure for your exact AutoDos version. AutoDos 1.0 and 2.0 have different holder-release and cleaning arrangements.
- Keep the interior dry while cleaning and allow any washed components to dry thoroughly.
- If the fault remains, deactivate AutoDos and use the ordinary detergent compartment.
- Contact Miele Service if the error continues.
For normal replacement, Miele’s procedure is to open the locked AutoDos lid, remove the empty disk, press a full disk down evenly until flush, close the lid and lock it. Some models may automatically reposition the disk before a program starts.

Which option makes sense?

For a simple cost comparison, divide the local price of a genuine disk by Miele’s approximate 20-cycle capacity. Then compare that figure with the local detergent-package cost divided by its estimated number of loads. Include separate rinse-aid and dishwasher-salt costs where applicable. The result will vary by country, retailer, dosage and water conditions.
Miele’s U.S. product listing has identified a 400 g PowerDisk at a displayed sale price of $21.99, which works out to approximately $1.10 per cycle at the stated 20-cycle capacity. Prices and availability change, so treat this only as a calculation from that listing, not a universal current price.

Bottom line
A used PowerDisk may be physically modifiable, and online owners have reported refill experiments. But Miele does not approve the practice: its instructions prohibit refilling with powder, prohibit liquid in AutoDos and warn of warranty consequences. For the safest supported cost-saving route, disable AutoDos and use the standard dispenser with the dose specified for your model and detergent. Buy genuine PowerDisks if convenience and manufacturer support matter more than consumable flexibility.
