Yes—Amazon designed Alexa Hunches to make certain smart-home changes without a fresh voice command, such as switching off a compatible light when Alexa infers nobody is home. The feature dates to 2020, not Alexa+. Its status in 2026 is uncertain: Amazon’s developer documentation still describes Hunches, while user reports say some consumer functions may have been retired. Check the Alexa app for controls rather than assuming the feature is available or enabled on your account.
What Alexa Hunches do
Hunches are a form of inferred home automation. Alexa looks for patterns in how people use the assistant and connected devices, along with the device states those products report. If a state seems out of step with the household’s usual pattern—for example, a light is still on when Alexa thinks everyone has gone to bed—it may suggest an action or, if proactive behavior is enabled and supported, take one.
Amazon announced proactive Hunches in December 2020. Its examples included turning off compatible lights, plugs, or switches when the home seemed empty or people appeared to be asleep. Other examples included adjusting a thermostat, putting a water heater into an energy-saving mode, or starting a robotic vacuum when the home seemed unoccupied. These are examples of possible supported actions, not a promise that every device or household can use them. Amazon’s announcement explains the original feature and its device requirements.

In this context, “on its own” means Alexa can carry out a supported action without a new spoken instruction after making an inference. It does not mean Alexa has unrestricted control over every connected device or can invent arbitrary automations. The product must be integrated with Alexa, expose the relevant controls and state information, and be eligible for the particular behavior. Where proactive actions are offered, the customer must also allow them.

Amazon’s developer materials describe actions using smart-home interfaces such as Alexa.PowerController for turning supported lights, plugs, and switches on or off. Other functions have their own requirements. That a product works with Alexa for voice commands—or can be included in a Routine—does not establish that it supports Hunches.
Hunches, Routines, and Alexa+ are different

The practical distinction is inference versus rules: Hunches act on what Alexa thinks may be happening; a Routine acts on conditions you define. Amazon describes Routines as a way to automate repeated or predictable tasks. See Amazon’s Routines overview.
Alexa+ is separate. Amazon introduced it in 2025 as a generative-AI version of Alexa and announced U.S. general availability on February 4, 2026. Amazon says it can control connected devices and create Routines by voice. Those capabilities do not prove that legacy Hunches were moved into Alexa+ or that every Hunches action is now an Alexa+ function. Is Hunches still available in 2026?
The public evidence is mixed. Amazon’s developer pages continue to describe Hunches and related connected-device capabilities. At the same time, user reports claim that most consumer Hunches functions were scheduled to end on June 9, 2026. The available sources do not include an official Amazon notice confirming that retirement, so it would be premature to say the feature definitely ended—or to promise that the old controls still work.
Availability and menus can vary by country, account, device, and app version. Open the Alexa app and search Settings for “Hunches,” “proactive actions,” or related smart-home automation controls. Treat those as search terms, not guaranteed menu labels. If no Hunches control appears, do not assume a device is being managed by Hunches; check its other automations.
How Alexa makes an occupancy guess—and why it can be wrong
Amazon says Hunches can draw on household usage patterns, interactions with Alexa, and connected-device state and change reports. Amazon does not publish a complete decision rule or threshold for deciding that everyone is away or asleep. “Alexa knows nobody is home” is therefore too strong: it may infer absence from incomplete signals, not confirm it with a dedicated presence detector.

- Someone may be home but not speak to Alexa.
- A guest or a household member with an unusual schedule may leave a device in an unexpected state.
- A device or integration may report stale or incorrect information, or fail to report a change during an outage.
- A normal but irregular household routine may look unusual to the system.
Amazon emphasizes device state reporting in its developer explanation of Hunches. Reliable reports matter because an automation based on an outdated status can produce the wrong result.

Check compatibility before relying on it
Amazon’s original examples covered lights, smart plugs, switches, thermostats, water-heater controls, and robotic vacuums. That list does not mean every model in those categories—or every “Works with Alexa” product—supports proactive Hunches. Support depends on the device, its Alexa integration, available controls, account setup, region, and whether the device reports state reliably. Amazon’s connected-device documentation describes supported device categories; device-category compatibility alone is not a guarantee of Hunches support.

- The device appears in your Alexa app and responds correctly to ordinary control.
- Its current state in the app matches reality when you turn it on or off.
- The manufacturer’s Alexa integration is active and the specific control you want is exposed.
- No manufacturer schedule, geofence, sensor rule, Routine, or other platform is also controlling the device.
- The relevant Hunches or proactive setting is actually available for your account and device.
Find the source of an unexpected change
If Alexa changes a light or appliance unexpectedly, do not assume Hunches was responsible. Work through likely automation sources:
- Check device activity and state. Look at the device in the Alexa app and, if available, its activity history. Confirm whether the reported state is current.
- Review Alexa automations. Inspect Routines and any visible Hunches or proactive-action controls. Disable or edit a rule only after identifying what it does.
- Check other controllers. Look at the device maker’s app, Away Mode, schedules, geofencing, motion or occupancy sensors, and other smart-home platforms.
- Change one control at a time and observe. If the device changes again, note when it happened and which automations remain enabled. This helps isolate the cause instead of disabling unrelated features.
App labels and paths change, so use the settings search rather than relying on an old menu path. If Hunches is absent, focus on the other automation sources. For a thermostat, avoid letting multiple systems compete to control the same automation: overlapping controllers can create confusing behavior. Hunches may suit low-consequence tasks, such as switching off a forgotten lamp, if you are comfortable with occasional mistaken guesses. Do not rely on probabilistic behavior for equipment where an unexpected shutoff, restart, or activation could cause harm or damage. That includes medical equipment, refrigeration or freezers, pet-care systems, security-critical lighting, heating in freezing conditions, and appliances that should never start automatically.

For important or time-sensitive behavior, use a clearly defined Routine, a suitable sensor, or the device maker’s own controls—and understand what happens if the network, integration, or sensor fails. A Routine is more explicit than a Hunch, though it still needs to be configured and tested properly.
Privacy and control
Because Hunches use patterns and device reports, a household may want to review both Alexa’s automation settings and its privacy controls. Amazon says Alexa+ interactions and settings can be managed through its Alexa Privacy dashboard; that is Amazon’s description of its controls, not a guarantee about how every device or third-party service handles data. Check the privacy settings available for your own account and the privacy policies of connected-device makers.
Alexa+ is available in the United States as of February 2026; Amazon says it is included with Prime there, with a $19.99 monthly plan for non-Prime customers and limited free access through Alexa.com and the mobile app. Those details concern Alexa+, not a requirement for Hunches, and availability differs by geography. Do not subscribe to Alexa+ solely to get a light to turn off automatically: first check whether a simple Routine or the device’s own scheduling feature meets the need.
