A block plane is a compact, bevel-up hand plane for trimming end grain, smoothing edges, chamfering corners, and cleaning up joinery. To get a clean first shaving, start with a sharp iron, project it only slightly, align its edge parallel to the sole, and test on scrap. A low-angle model is especially useful for end grain, while the best choice for other work depends on the plane’s adjustments and how it fits your hand.
What a block plane does
Block planes are small enough for one-handed work and useful where a larger bench plane is awkward. Common jobs include trimming an edge flush, easing a sharp corner into a chamfer, fitting a joint, and shaving end grain. Choose the plane and its setup for the cut rather than treating every block plane as interchangeable.
Bed angle and cutting angle are not the same
The bed angle is the angle at which the iron sits in the plane; the cutting angle also depends on the bevel ground on the iron. Stanley’s guidance explains the defining arrangement: “Because of the low angle, the plane iron is set bevel up.” (Stanley Tools support.)

For common configurations, Fine Woodworking describes a standard block plane with an approximately 20° bed and a low-angle version with an approximately 12° bed. With a 25° bevel, those combinations produce approximate cutting angles of 45° and 37°, respectively. Lee Valley likewise describes its low-angle model as 12° bed plus 25° bevel, for a 37° cutting angle. These are examples tied to the described configurations, not universal specifications for all planes or irons. (Fine Woodworking; Lee Valley.)

Choose a plane for the work
For end-grain trimming, a low-angle block plane is a practical option. For general edge work, either standard or low-angle designs may suit the task. Retailer Woodcraft recommends a low-angle adjustable-mouth model as a useful single-plane choice, but it is advice, not a rule that fits every woodworker or job.
Compare the details that affect actual use:
- Intended cuts: Consider whether end grain, edge smoothing, chamfers, or joint cleanup will be the main job.
- Mouth adjustment: An adjustable mouth lets you tune the opening for the shaving; a fixed mouth has fewer settings to manage.
- Iron and adjustment: Look for an iron that can be sharpened and adjusted reliably, and controls you can operate confidently.
- Fit: Hold the plane if possible. A compact tool should feel secure and controllable in your hand.
- Condition and value: An inexpensive plane may work well after tuning, but its initial setup and blade condition matter. Price examples published by Fine Woodworking in 2019 ranged from roughly $35 for hardware-store models to as much as $250 for high-end brass planes; these are historical examples, not current prices.

Set up the plane for a first shaving
- Check the iron. Begin with a sharp blade whose edge is shaped appropriately for the work. Handle it carefully; a plane iron can cause serious injury. Lee Valley recommends a honing guide for repeatable sharpening. Its setup guidance is at Lee Valley.
- Release the cap enough to adjust. Loosen the lever cap according to the plane’s design so the iron can move. Do not remove more than needed.
- Set a very small projection. Advance the iron until it extends just enough to take a light shaving. Sight across the sole: the cutting edge should run parallel to it. If the plane permits lateral adjustment, center the edge across the mouth and correct any tilt.
- Set the mouth, if adjustable. Open it only far enough for the shaving to pass. Make small changes rather than forcing the adjuster.
- Secure and test. Tighten the lever cap securely without overtightening. Lee Valley says a quarter-turn after full engagement is plenty for its instructions. Test on scrap and adjust projection or mouth opening until the cut is continuous and suitably fine. Follow your plane’s own manual if its controls differ.
Troubleshoot the cut
- No shaving: Check that the iron is sharp and seated correctly, then increase projection in small increments.
- Shaving varies across the width: Check that the edge is parallel to the sole and centered laterally; adjust alignment if the design allows it.
- The plane takes too heavy a cut or tears the surface: Reduce projection, check sharpness, and, on an adjustable-mouth plane, narrow the opening for a finer cut. Retest on scrap.
- The iron shifts or adjustment feels wrong: Check that the lever cap is engaged and consult the manual for the exact model. On Lee Valley’s design, alignment screws should just touch the blade; overtightening the cap is not necessary.
