Teak is the best practical real-wood choice for a removable shower bench or stool. It tolerates decay better than most woods, but it is not waterproof and cannot replace the shower’s waterproofing system. For a built-in seat, use a waterproof, load-bearing bench system finished with tile; for wood visuals across shower walls or floors, choose wood-look porcelain tile.
Which wood works best in a shower?
For a movable seat, choose a purpose-built teak shower bench or stool. Its heartwood is commonly rated very durable against decay, and teak’s dimensional stability makes it a more practical choice for repeated wetting and drying than many other woods. Still, “water resistant” does not mean waterproof: the bench needs to drain, dry, and be maintained according to its maker’s instructions.
Verify that a product is actually solid teak. The Wood Database notes that the name “teak” can be applied loosely to different woods, so check the product description, construction, hardware, feet, and care guidance rather than relying on the label alone: The Wood Database’s teak profile.

Purpose-built teak shower furniture often has slatted or grated surfaces to let water drain, rubber feet to lift the base slightly and improve grip, and stainless-steel hardware intended for wet locations. These features matter alongside the wood species: a poorly draining bench that sits in standing water is a less sensible choice than a well-designed seat that can dry between uses. Western red cedar: decay resistant, but softer
Western red cedar is rated durable to very durable against decay, but it is soft and more easily dented or scratched. That makes it a less convincing option for a frequently used shower seat that will see repeated impact and abrasion. Consider it only if you specifically prefer its color or aroma and can provide suitable construction, ventilation, and care. Other outdoor woods are not automatically shower woods
Do not assume that a species used for outdoor decking is automatically suitable for indoor shower furniture. No specific case establishes ipe or another dense exotic wood as a better shower-seat choice here. Construction, drainage, fasteners, finish, and the wood’s identity all affect how a seat performs.

Why rot resistance is not a waterproofing plan
Decay fungi reduce wood strength. The USDA Forest Products Laboratory explains that decay can be prevented from starting or progressing when wood is kept below approximately 20% moisture content. A shower’s repeated liquid water, humidity, and slow-drying conditions make moisture control essential even when the visible wood is naturally decay resistant. Schluter’s steam-shower guidance makes the construction distinction clear: “Many of the materials used to build common shower benches, such as wood and gypsum board, are moisture sensitive and require additional waterproofing preparation prior to setting tile.” A wood-framed bench may be possible as part of a correctly designed and fully waterproofed assembly; exposed lumber protected only with paint, stain, or surface sealer is not a substitute for that assembly. Removable teak bench or permanent tiled bench?

When a removable teak bench makes sense
A freestanding bench avoids opening finished shower walls and can be moved for cleaning or drying. Compare product specifications rather than treating a capacity claim as a general guarantee. For example, Delta lists a 250-pound capacity for its fold-down teak seat on its current product page. AquaTeak lists 300 pounds for some models on its shower bench pages, while one Wudkey listing at Home Depot states 350 pounds: Home Depot’s Wudkey product listing. These are manufacturer or retailer specifications, not independent comparative test results. Check the current instructions and rating for the exact model you plan to use.
When a permanent waterproof bench is the better fit
For built-in seating, choose a waterproof, load-bearing system integrated into the shower assembly and finish it with tile. How to keep a teak shower bench in better condition
- Choose a design with slats or a grate so water does not remain on a solid surface.
- Use the bench’s feet as designed, and move the seat away from standing water when practical.
- Clean it regularly and let it dry; follow the product maker’s care instructions before using oil, sealer, or abrasive cleaners.
- Inspect the bench, joints, feet, and hardware. Replace or repair components if they become loose, damaged, or unstable.
- Keep the shower ventilated and address leaks or persistent pooling rather than trying to mask them with a surface treatment.
There is no universal care schedule or treatment established for every teak bench. Oils or sealers should not be treated as guarantees against mold, warping, or decay; they cannot compensate for standing water, poor ventilation, defective construction, or a leaking shower.

For a wood look across shower walls or floors
Use wood-look porcelain tile rather than true wood in the continuously wet surfaces. It provides the visual effect without exposing wood to constant shower wetting. A real teak bench can add natural wood as a removable accent.
