There is no universal best lint trap for a washing machine. The right filter depends on your washer’s exact model and design: some machines have a user-accessible drain-pump filter, while others use a different arrangement. Check your owner’s manual before buying a replacement or attaching anything to the drain hose.
What a washing machine filter actually catches
“Lint trap” can refer to different parts, and not every washer has a dedicated lint filter that works like the screen in a clothes dryer. On some models, lint and other debris collect in an accessible drain-pump filter. Other washers use a different filter arrangement, and a filter’s location—or whether it is user-accessible—varies by model. Maytag advises checking the owner’s manual for the specific washer.
A button trap may not catch lint
On Haier washer-dryer combo units covered by its guidance, the button trap catches small loose items; it is not a lint filter. Haier says lint collects in the condenser tank during drying. Check your combo unit’s manual to identify what each trap or filter is designed to catch.
How to choose the right replacement
- Identify the exact washer model. Find the model number on the appliance label and use it to locate the correct owner’s manual or official parts information.
- Confirm the filter type and location. Check whether your model has a drain-pump filter, another filter arrangement, or a trap intended for objects other than lint.
- Replace a part only when needed. If the existing filter is damaged or needs replacement, verify the compatible part number against official documentation for your washer. The manufacturer guidance cited here does not establish a universal replacement filter.
- Check access and care instructions. Confirm whether the filter is designed for user maintenance and follow the model-specific removal, cleaning, and reinstallation directions.
A soft-bristled brush is an optional cleaning aid only for filter designs whose manufacturer instructions call for one. LG specifies a soft-bristled brush and warm water in its guidance for the covered washer filters; that does not mean every washer owner needs a brush.

How often to clean the filter
There is no single cleaning schedule for all washers. These manufacturer recommendations apply to the equipment described in their respective guidance, not to every model:

How to clean a drain-pump filter safely
Filter removal can release water. Use the instructions for your model rather than assuming every washer drains the same way.

LG’s instructions for the covered filters start with an empty washer, turned off, with visible water drained from the tub. LG also directs users to turn off and unplug the washer.
- Drain residual water before opening the filter. In LG’s procedure, use the drain hose and catch the water in a shallow pan before removing the pump filter.
- Clean only as instructed. LG specifies warm water and a soft-bristled brush for the covered filter. Electrolux says to disconnect the machine from mains power, never remove the filter while the machine is operating, and wait for the water to cool.
- Reinstall the filter securely. Follow the manual’s fitting instructions before operating the washer again.
Should you add a lint catcher to the drain hose?
Do not assume an add-on drain-hose catcher is suitable for every washer. The available manufacturer guidance does not establish comparative capture performance for aftermarket external lint traps. More importantly, an attachment must not interfere with the washer’s specified drain-hose installation.

Whirlpool warns that inserting a drain hose too far can cause siphoning and says not to seal the hose into the drainpipe because airflow is needed. Follow the installation directions for your exact washer; hose requirements and measurements on one product’s guidance should not be treated as universal.

- Avoid overloading the washer.
- Separate lint-giving fabrics, such as towels, from lint-taking fabrics.
- Check pockets for paper or other debris before washing.
- Consider whether new garments are shedding lint.
If the problem continues, consult the manual’s troubleshooting section for your model rather than assuming a generic add-on trap will fix it.
