For many electric fireplaces, the safest surge protector is no surge protector at all: the manufacturer may require the fireplace to plug directly into a grounded wall outlet. Check the manual for your exact model before connecting a power strip, surge protector, wall tap, extension cord, or UPS. You can still protect the nearby TV and other home-theater equipment with a suitable surge protector—but keep that separate from the heater.
Quick answer: check the fireplace manual first
Do not plug an electric fireplace into a surge protector unless the manual for that specific model explicitly allows it. Touchstone manuals for several product families—including wall-mounted, recessed, Fireplug PRO, and Sideline Elite fireplaces—specify a grounded 110-volt, 15-amp outlet and prohibit connecting the fireplace to a surge protector. That is guidance for those models, not proof that every brand has the same rule. Read the manual for your fireplace before choosing a connection.

Why a usual “best surge protector” list can mislead
Electric fireplaces include a heating load; TVs, streaming boxes, and soundbars are electronics with different power needs. A low-cost or unsuitable strip can be overloaded, damaged, or shut down under a load it was not meant to carry. Extra plugs and connections also add points where a loose or damaged connection may cause trouble. These are reasons to follow the fireplace maker’s directions—not a claim that every surge protector will overheat with every fireplace.
Also distinguish the devices:
- Power strip: adds outlets and may include overload protection, but does not necessarily suppress voltage surges.
- Surge protector: adds transient-voltage suppression. Its certification, ratings, grounding, and installation still matter.
- UPS: provides battery backup and may include surge protection. It is generally a poor workaround for a heater unless both the fireplace and UPS manufacturers explicitly approve the load and connection.
Belkin explains the distinction between power strips and surge protectors. A breaker limits excessive current; it is not the same function as surge suppression.
What “plug directly into the wall” means
When a manual requires direct connection, plug the factory fireplace cord into the specified, properly grounded wall receptacle. Do not put a surge protector, ordinary power strip, wall tap, extension cord, ungrounded adapter, or improvised splitter between the fireplace and outlet. Do not connect one power strip to another.

Check the manual and the fireplace’s rating label for voltage and current or wattage. Also consider the circuit-breaker rating, other substantial loads on the circuit, local code, and whether the receptacle is grounded and in good condition. A 15-amp receptacle alone does not establish that every combination of appliances on its circuit is suitable. Do not use a joule rating or outlet count to decide that a heater can safely share a strip.
Tripp Lite’s installation guidance calls for a standard grounded three-wire outlet and warns against extension cords or adapters that eliminate grounding. See its owner’s manual. If the receptacle is loose, ungrounded, discolored, warm, or damaged—or the circuit trips repeatedly—stop using the fireplace until the problem is assessed. Never remove the ground pin or use a “cheater” adapter.
If you can’t find the fireplace manual
- Find the model number on the rating label, rear panel, packaging, or purchase record.
- Look for the manual on the manufacturer’s support site, or ask the manufacturer for the exact model’s instructions.
- Search the document for “surge protector,” “power strip,” “extension cord,” “grounded outlet,” “15 amp,” and “dedicated circuit.”
- Until the manufacturer confirms otherwise, use the properly grounded receptacle specified for the fireplace and do not add a strip or extension.
Surge protection for the TV and electronics nearby
A separate surge protector can be useful for a TV, soundbar, streaming device, game console, Blu-ray player, or other appropriate home-theater equipment. Keep the fireplace on its required direct connection. Choose a protector for the electronics, not as a way to bypass the fireplace manual.

What to look for
- Recognized surge-protection certification: Look for a current UL 1449 listing or equivalent recognized certification. UL 1363 is associated with power strips and is not the same surge-protection standard. Certification does not make a product suitable for every load or installation. Belkin’s overview explains the distinction.
- Let-through voltage: This describes the voltage that reaches connected equipment during a surge; lower is generally preferable. Compare the product’s stated rating rather than relying on marketing language. Eaton explains surge-protector ratings and grounding.
- Joule rating: Use it as one comparison point, not as a standalone quality score. Eaton’s buying guide suggests broad ranges for different equipment, but those are its product guidance—not a universal safety rule or a guarantee. See the Eaton buying guide.
- Grounding and status indication: A protector designed for a standard AC outlet needs a functioning ground to operate as intended. A grounded-wiring or protection indicator is useful, but not a complete inspection of the home’s wiring.
- Failure and overload features: A protection-status light, automatic shutdown if protection is depleted, and a resettable circuit breaker can make problems easier to spot. Follow the product manual if an indicator goes out.
- Fit and placement: Choose enough outlet spacing for bulky adapters and a cord that reaches the wall without an extension cord. Keep the protector dry, uncovered, visible, and away from the fireplace’s hot-air outlet; do not trap it under a rug or behind furniture where heat cannot dissipate.
Options for adjacent electronics—not the fireplace heater

These specifications identify potential choices for nearby electronics; they are not independent performance tests. Check current model details and the product’s own instructions before purchase. No product in this list is an automatic recommendation for the fireplace itself.
Would a UPS work instead?
Do not use a UPS to get around a fireplace manual’s prohibition. A UPS such as the CyberPower CP1500PFCLCD is specified at 1500VA/1000 watts for equipment such as computers, workstations, networking gear, and home entertainment equipment. A resistance heater can use a large share of a UPS’s capacity, leaving little battery runtime, and the fireplace maker may prohibit the connection regardless. Consider a UPS for electronics that need backup power, not for a heater unless both manufacturers specifically approve the use.
For broader surge protection, consider the whole home
If your concern is surges reaching the fireplace and other appliances, a whole-home surge-protective device installed at the service equipment is a more relevant option than placing a consumer strip in the fireplace’s cord path. Have a qualified electrician select and install a device suitable for your electrical service and local code, and assess grounding and bonding. Whole-home protection can provide broader coverage, but it does not make a home lightning-proof, guarantee survival from every surge, repair faulty wiring, or override the fireplace manual.

The protector’s protection light is off
The unit may have lost protection, may not be receiving power, may be connected to an ungrounded or incorrectly wired receptacle, or its indicator may have failed. Unplug the connected electronics, consult the protector manual, and have the outlet checked with an appropriate tester or by a qualified electrician. Replace the protector if protection status cannot be confirmed. Do not keep using it as a plain power strip unless its manufacturer says that is safe.

A surge protector’s breaker trips
Unplug devices and reduce the load before resetting; do not repeatedly reset a breaker without finding the cause. Inspect cords and plugs for damage and check what else shares the circuit. Tripp Lite’s manual likewise instructs users to reduce the load before resetting its circuit breaker.

The fireplace trips the household breaker
A larger surge protector will not fix this. The circuit may have too many loads, the fireplace or plug may be faulty, wiring may be loose, or the installation may need a different circuit. Stop using the fireplace if tripping persists and arrange qualified electrical or appliance service. Do not repeatedly reset the breaker.
The fireplace is outdoors or in a damp location
Use only electrical equipment specifically rated for the environment. An indoor protector is not made suitable for outdoor use by placing it near an outdoor fireplace. Belkin notes that outdoor power equipment needs an appropriate outdoor rating; see its power-strip and surge-protector guidance. An outdoor-rated product still does not override the fireplace manual.
The outlet is too far away
Do not casually solve the distance problem with an extension cord. Cord construction, wire size, condition, and rating matter; the CPSC identifies hazards involving unsuitable extension cords and related products in its extension-cord safety guidance. Eaton also advises against pairing surge protectors with extension cords because of heating and fire risks. Ask the fireplace manufacturer or a qualified electrician about a compliant outlet location instead.
Bottom line
For the fireplace, follow its own manual: if it calls for direct connection, plug it into the specified grounded wall outlet and use no strip, surge protector, wall tap, extension cord, or UPS. Protect the TV and other suitable electronics separately with a properly certified, grounded protector.
