For a permanent Sonos backyard system, the best fit is Outdoor Speakers by Sonos and Sonance paired with a Sonos Amp. The speakers are designed for outdoor installation, but they are passive—not wireless—and need speaker cable and an amplifier. If you would rather avoid mounting and wiring, choose a portable model: Move 2 for a covered patio or deck, or Roam 2 for personal listening and smaller spaces.
Sonos currently offers one dedicated outdoor speaker pair, so the real choice is between a wired installation, portable speakers, or an Amp connected to compatible third-party outdoor speakers. The right option depends on exposure, coverage, installation effort, and how you plan to use the space.

Best permanent system: Outdoor Speakers by Sonos and Sonance with Amp
The dedicated outdoor pair is the strongest choice when you want speakers mounted in place, consistent stereo coverage for a defined patio or deck, and no battery to charge. Sonos lists the pair at $999 and Sonos Amp at $799, for a regular component total of about $1,798 before installation. The official bundle was listed at $1,708 during the same price check; treat that as a dated promotion, not a guaranteed current price. Check the Outdoor Set page before buying.

These are passive speakers: they receive power and audio over speaker wire from Amp. Sonos supplies the Sonos streaming and system control through Amp, but the speaker pair itself does not connect to Wi-Fi or operate wirelessly. The Amp needs suitable power and a reliable network connection at its installation location.
Outdoor protection and specifications
Sonos lists the pair as IP66 and describes it as engineered to withstand humidity, water, salt spray, heat, UV exposure, and freezing temperatures. The listed operating range is –13°F to 149°F (–25°C to 65°C). IP66 means dust-tight protection and protection against powerful water jets; it does not mean the speakers can be submerged or ignored in every climate. Placement, drainage, sealed cable entries, mounting, and periodic inspection still matter, particularly near a pool or coast.

These are manufacturer specifications, not independent measurements or a promise that one pair will fill a particular square footage. Outdoor sound disperses without the walls of a room to reflect it. Speaker spacing, height, aim, ambient noise, and the volume you want all affect coverage.
Sonos says Amp can recognize Sonos Architectural speakers and apply custom tuning through the app’s Optimize Sonos Speakers feature. This may help produce a more even frequency response, but it cannot compensate for poor placement, incorrect wiring, or a weak network connection. App wording and navigation can change, so look for the current option when setting up Amp.
When this system makes sense—and when it does not
Choose the installed pair if you can route cable, mount speakers securely, and place Amp somewhere dry, ventilated, electrically safe, and accessible for service. It suits a defined entertainment area such as a patio, deck, or covered outdoor dining space. Amp can also connect wired sources, including compatible TV audio, but check the TV’s output, cable path, and current Amp specifications before planning the installation. Do not assume every projector, TV, or source will connect or behave identically.

Look elsewhere if you rent, expect to rearrange the yard, do not want wiring work, or need sound distributed across a large lawn. A single pair may not cover a broad property evenly; turning it up louder is not always a good substitute for more appropriately placed speakers.
Best portable option for a patio: Sonos Move 2
Move 2 is the practical choice for renters, seasonal use, or a covered patio where you want Sonos playback without running speaker cable. Sonos lists Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, stereo playback from one unit, an IP56 rating, and up to 24 hours of battery life. Its listed U.S. price was $499.
Move 2 is easier to bring indoors after use than a mounted speaker, and Bluetooth offers another way to play when home Wi-Fi is unavailable. But it remains a portable speaker: it requires charging, provides less distributed coverage than a fixed pair, and is not a substitute for speakers specifically selected for permanent, fully exposed installation. Check Sonos’s current care guidance rather than leaving it outdoors indefinitely.
Best compact option: Sonos Roam 2
Roam 2 is better for gardening, personal listening, moving between spots, or adding music to a small gathering than for filling a backyard. Sonos lists it at $179 regular U.S. pricing, with an IP67 rating and up to 10 hours of battery life. A single Roam 2 plays in mono, and its compact enclosure limits how much output and bass it can provide compared with a larger speaker or installed pair.
IP67 is a useful rating for a portable speaker, but it does not mean every accessory or charging connection is equally protected. Keep charging equipment dry and follow the product’s instructions, particularly around pools.
Where Sonos Play fits
Sonos positions Sonos Play as a portable speaker for home and beyond, and listed it at $299. It may suit someone looking for a portable option between compact Roam 2 and larger Move 2 use cases. The available product information does not establish that it is the best choice for permanent, fully exposed backyard installation. Before buying it for that purpose, check its current environmental rating and Sonos’s installation and care guidance.

Choosing for a large yard
A pair of wall-mounted speakers is usually a better match for a defined patio than for an entire property. In a large yard, sound can fade quickly as listeners move farther from the speakers. Multiple distributed speakers can deliver more even coverage at a more comfortable level than two speakers placed far apart and turned up.
A landscape system such as Sonance Patio Series uses satellite speakers and a subwoofer for a different kind of installation. It is not a Sonos-branded package, so compare its amplification and integration requirements with your Sonos setup rather than assuming it works like the Sonos/Sonance passive pair. For an Amp-based system, a second pair of compatible 8-ohm speakers may be possible, but follow Sonos’s current wiring and impedance guidance.
Installation planning for the dedicated pair
- Define the listening zone. Choose the patio or seating area you want to cover. Aim for balanced sound where people sit instead of placing speakers solely for visual symmetry.
- Plan the Amp location. Confirm safe power, ventilation, access for service, and reliable Wi-Fi or an Ethernet connection. The speakers’ IP66 rating does not apply to Amp.
- Plan the cable route and mounting. The product information specifies 16-gauge or larger speaker wire. Use cable and routing appropriate to the outdoor installation and follow the included installation instructions. Secure brackets to a suitable mounting surface and protect cable entry points.
- Wire the pair consistently. Connect positive to positive and negative to negative at both speakers and Amp. Avoid loose strands that could short terminals.
- Add Amp to Sonos. Power it, open the current Sonos app, add Amp to the system, and assign or name the room. App labels may differ as software changes.
- Enable speaker optimization if offered. If the app recognizes the Sonos Architectural outdoor speakers and presents Optimize Sonos Speakers, enable it for the custom tuning.
- Test before finishing the job. Play familiar material at moderate volume. Confirm left-right orientation, balance, secure connections, and that the speakers are aimed as intended.
For wiring, mounting, and installation details, use the outdoor speaker guide and the Amp guide. Sonos’s Amp guidance specifies speakers above 4 ohms, prohibits speakers rated below 4 ohms, and describes two pairs of 8-ohm speakers wired in parallel as a supported configuration. It also specifies minimum speaker power ratings and warns against series wiring. The simplest configuration is one pair; check the current guide before adding speakers, and consider installer help for complex cable runs or multiple pairs.

If the sound seems thin or hollow
A reversed connection on one speaker can weaken bass and destabilize the stereo image. Turn off Amp before inspecting the wiring. Check that positive and negative connections match at both ends, look for loose strands or damaged cable, and confirm both speakers are connected to the intended Amp terminals. If needed, test one speaker at a time. Do not rewire the speakers in series.

- Poolside: IP66 does not permit submersion. Keep installed speakers out of the pool and away from regular direct spray; follow the installation guide for cable entries and connections. For Roam 2, keep charging equipment dry.
- Winter: The dedicated pair’s listed lower operating limit is –13°F, but ice, trapped water, snow load, cable damage, and freeze-thaw cycles can still cause problems. A temperature rating is not a guarantee against every winter condition.
- Coastal air: Sonos lists salt-spray resistance, but inspect mounting hardware and cable over time for corrosion and maintain the installation.
- Network: Amp is the networked component. Test Wi-Fi where it will go, consider Ethernet if practical, and avoid placing it in a sealed metal enclosure. Keep the system accessible for troubleshooting.
- TV audio: Check the TV’s available audio output, the connection path to Amp, and whether the resulting setup suits your intended use. For a separate outdoor listening zone, plan the Sonos room and source behavior before installation.
Third-party speakers and other alternatives
If you already own Sonos Amp—or prefer another speaker’s appearance, voicing, or price—Amp can be paired with third-party weather-resistant speakers, provided their impedance, power handling, and environmental ratings are appropriate. Not every speaker labeled “outdoor” is automatically compatible. Sonos’s specific architectural-speaker optimization may not apply, so check the current Amp guide and the speaker maker’s installation requirements.
For portable Bluetooth listening without a need for Sonos multiroom integration, the Bose outdoor and portable category is another place to compare. Evaluate the exact model’s weather rating, connectivity, and battery behavior rather than treating a product category as one specification.

A portable speaker is generally more suitable than a permanent wired installation. Move 2 is the stronger general-purpose patio option; Roam 2 is better when compact size and easy portability matter more than coverage.
Is the Sonos outdoor system worth the cost?
It is most compelling if you want permanent mounted speakers, wired stereo playback, and Sonos control in a defined outdoor zone. If avoiding installation and expense matters more, a portable speaker is the more practical choice.
