The right retractable projector screen depends first on your projector’s throw type, then on room lighting and how flat you need the image to stay. For most standard-throw home theaters, a motorized, tab-tensioned matte-white screen is the strongest all-around direction: it costs more than a basic roll-down screen, but its side tension is designed to reduce waves. For a budget setup, consider a manual screen or a basic electric model. For an ultra-short-throw projector, choose a screen specifically designed for UST projection instead.
These recommendations are based on published product specifications and manufacturer information, not hands-on comparative testing. Prices below are starting-price signals reported on manufacturer listings when checked; they vary by size, material, and configuration, and should be confirmed before ordering.

Tab tension improves the odds of a uniform viewing surface; it does not guarantee perfection. A screen mounted out of level, exposed to unsuitable heat or humidity, or operated with incorrect travel limits can still have problems. Tensioned models also cost more and generally need more careful planning for the housing and mounting position. CineTension 2’s published specification identifies a 1.1-gain matte-white material and a motorized tubular drive; check the exact model and configuration for control options and current pricing.
Buy this direction if: you watch often, want motorized operation, and are sensitive to screen waves in a controlled-light room. Skip it if: the lowest price matters most, the screen will be used occasionally, or your main problem is daylight rather than surface flatness. For a UST projector, choose a UST-specific screen instead.
Best budget manual: Elite Screens Manual B
The Elite Screens Manual B is the straightforward choice when you want the image to disappear without paying for a motor. Manual pull-down screens avoid motor wiring and motor-control troubleshooting, and the manufacturer’s Manual Series information describes pull-down operation and optional mounting hardware. Check the product and size listing for the brackets included with your specific configuration; some mounting accessories may be optional.
The trade-off is convenience and flatness. A manual screen is not tab-tensioned, and the material may develop waves over time. Pull it down evenly rather than yanking from one side, and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for retraction. It is a reasonable fit for occasional viewing or a multipurpose room, but not the strongest choice if a premium theater image with a consistently flat surface is your priority.
Buy it if: you want a lower-cost retractable screen for a standard-throw projector and do not mind operating it by hand. Skip it if: you watch every day, want one-button automation, or are especially sensitive to waves.
Best affordable motorized option: Elite Screens Spectrum 2
The Elite Screens Spectrum 2 is a more convenient step up from a manual screen for a multipurpose room. Its listed specifications include a 1.1-gain matte-white material and 180-degree viewing angle, and the manufacturer’s shop listing showed a starting price of $449 when checked. It is a standard-throw option, not a substitute for a purpose-built UST screen.

Confirm the exact control package before buying: remote operation and projector-trigger capability can depend on the selected configuration. Also distinguish Spectrum 2 from older Spectrum listings. The product family has catalog history that includes discontinued listings, so verify that the page and model number refer to Spectrum 2 specifically.

Best for standard-throw control options: Elite Screens VMAX2
The VMAX2 is a motorized, non-tab-tensioned choice for standard-throw installations where controls matter. Elite lists 1.1-gain MaxWhite or MaxWhite Fiberglass material, IR and RF remotes, and a 5–12 V trigger input. It is listed for wall or ceiling mounting, with a two-year limited warranty on the official shop page; confirm the terms for your region and exact configuration. The listed price was $1,038 when checked.
A 5–12 V trigger can let compatible equipment signal the screen to move, but it is not the same thing as Wi-Fi, HDMI-CEC, or full smart-home control. Verify the projector’s trigger output and the screen’s connection and pinout before wiring. An RJ45-shaped trigger port should not be assumed to be an Ethernet network port. Elite also specifies the VMAX2 is not compatible with short-throw or ultra-short-throw projectors. The power-cord side and optional mounting brackets are practical installation details to check in the product documentation before laying out the room.
Buy it if: your projector is standard throw and you want RF/IR remote choices or trigger operation without moving to a tab-tensioned model. Skip it if: you use UST or short throw, or flatness is your leading requirement.

Best for UST and brighter rooms: Elite Screens Kestrel Tab-Tension CLR 3
Ultra-short-throw projectors send light upward toward the screen from close to the wall, so they need a screen designed for that geometry. Do not treat every surface marketed as ALR as interchangeable. CLR is intended for UST projection, while other ambient-light-rejecting materials may be designed for different projector positions. Even a matched CLR screen cannot erase direct sunlight, bright ceiling reflections, or a projector that lacks sufficient light output. Screen angle, projector placement, seating position, and room surfaces still affect the image. Before ordering, compare the screen’s installation geometry with the UST projector’s requirements and request a material sample if available.
Buy it if: you have a UST projector and want the screen to rise from a cabinet or floor enclosure. Skip it if: you use a conventional long-throw projector unless the screen manufacturer confirms compatibility, or if a matte-white standard-throw screen better fits your room.
Best premium concealed installation: Screen Innovations Solo 3
Screen Innovations Solo 3 is a configurable route for a room where the screen should disappear into a wall or ceiling. The product line includes wall-mounted and in-ceiling/flush configurations, multiple material choices—including standard, ALR, and acoustically transparent variants—and sizes listed up to 200 inches. The official page shows a $999 starting figure, but that is not a dependable installed quote: size, material, housing, controls, and installation change the total.

In-ceiling or soffit installations may require coordination among the screen dealer, electrician, and builder before drywall or finish work closes the space.
Buy it if: concealment and integration are worth dealer involvement and a configured quote. Skip it if: you want a simple, low-cost screen with transparent pricing for a standard size.
Best for speakers behind the picture: Seymour AV custom retractable
If the center speaker needs to sit behind the image, a custom acoustically transparent retractable solution from Seymour AV is a specialist option. Its portfolio includes acoustically transparent materials and retractable or masking solutions, and its store information says retractable products are customized. Contact the company to discuss dimensions, material, and installation rather than assuming a standard retail model will meet the requirement.

Acoustically transparent surfaces are a compromise to select deliberately, not just a material label. Woven and perforated surfaces behave differently, and image brightness, uniformity, fine detail, and speaker response can all be affected. Plan speaker placement and screen material together, and expect to calibrate the audio after installation.
Buy this route if: you are building a dedicated theater and need speakers behind the screen. Skip it if: you want a quick DIY purchase or the room does not benefit from hidden front speakers.

1. Confirm projector throw type
Identify whether the projector is standard/long throw, short throw, or UST. This is the first filter: a standard-throw matte-white screen is not automatically suitable for a UST projector, and a UST CLR surface is not a universal upgrade for a ceiling-mounted conventional projector. Check the screen and projector manufacturers’ compatibility guidance before purchase. For example, Elite explicitly excludes short-throw and UST projectors from VMAX2 compatibility.
2. Match material to the room
- Dark, controlled theater: matte white is usually a predictable choice with broad viewing angles and natural color. A typical gain around 0.9–1.1 is a useful starting range, not a rule for every projector.
- Living room with controllable lamps: matte white may still be right; consider gray or ALR only after matching it to the projector position and seating.
- Bright room with standard throw: an ALR surface may help with some ambient light, but can narrow viewing angles or introduce hotspotting or color changes. It cannot fix every reflection.
- Bright room with UST: look for a UST-specific CLR screen rather than a generic ALR product.
- Speakers behind the image: choose an acoustically transparent material based on both audio and image requirements.
Gain describes how a material distributes reflected light; it is not a universal picture-quality score. Higher gain can direct more brightness toward viewers near the screen axis while reducing uniformity off-axis. Check viewing-angle and material specifications, then request a sample for specialty surfaces when possible.
3. Decide whether tab tension is worth the cost
A basic roll-down screen hangs from its top edge and may form waves. A tab-tensioned design pulls the material laterally to help maintain flatness. That can be valuable on a large, frequently used screen, but adds cost and can require a larger or more carefully installed housing. It is not a guarantee against every surface defect. A more expensive screen that is mounted crooked or installed in unsuitable conditions is still a problem.

4. Select aspect ratio and size for your content
- 16:9: the sensible default for streaming, television, gaming, and mixed home use.
- 2.35:1 or 2.40:1: suits a constant-image-width cinema setup, but requires masking and a way to change image geometry—such as projector lens memory, an anamorphic lens, or manual zoom and focus adjustments.
- 4:3: generally makes sense only for older material, presentations, or a specific mixed-use need.
Do not order based on diagonal alone. Measure the available wall width and ceiling clearance, then compare the visible image dimensions with the full housing width and drop, including borders. Check projector throw distance, zoom range, lens shift, and the screen’s required drop. Leave room for speakers, furniture, sightlines, and any masking. A larger image spreads the projector’s light over more area. Before choosing the largest size that fits, consider brightness, material gain, ambient light, viewing distance, and realistic HDR expectations. “4K-ready” or “HDR-ready” wording is not proof that a screen creates resolution or HDR performance; the full system and room determine what you see.
5. Plan controls and construction details
Choose the control method before installation. IR generally needs a suitable path for remote signals; RF can work without aiming at the screen in the same way, but features vary by model. A 5–12 V trigger requires compatible equipment and correct wiring. Do not assume that a trigger connection means app or smart-home support.
For a wall, ceiling, soffit, or recessed installation, confirm housing dimensions, mounting points, power-cord location, bracket requirements, and access for future service. Check that the structure can support the screen and that the final position clears lights, vents, doors, and trim. Include electrical work, accessories, shipping, and installation in the total budget—not just the listed screen price.
Installation checklist
- Verify the model and material. Confirm throw-type compatibility, image size, aspect ratio, included controls, warranty, and the exact material.
- Measure the full installation envelope. Record housing width, mounting locations, drop, power-cord side, and visible-image dimensions.
- Check structure and power. Locate studs or suitable ceiling framing and plan an outlet or approved electrical connection at the required location. Use qualified help where the work requires it.
- Confirm projector geometry. Check throw distance, zoom, lens shift, image height, and any lens-memory needs before fixing the screen position.
- Mount level and square. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions and use the specified brackets; do not assume optional L-brackets are included.
- Test before concealing anything. Run the screen through its full travel and confirm the image aligns before closing a soffit, hiding cables, or finishing the ceiling.
- Set travel limits only as directed. Use the product’s instructions and avoid casual adjustments to motor limits.
- Use the screen as specified. Keep it retracted when not in use if the manufacturer recommends it, and avoid pulling or handling the material off-center.
If the electric screen stops responding
Start with low-risk checks: confirm the outlet has power, make sure the screen is plugged in correctly, and replace remote batteries with fresh alkaline batteries. If the tubular motor’s thermal relay has shut it down, Elite’s support guidance says to allow about 20–30 minutes for cooling before trying again. Check an internal fuse only with manufacturer guidance. Do not open the housing casually, bypass electrical protections, or keep operating a screen that is binding or making unusual noises; contact the manufacturer or a qualified installer.
Which one should you buy?
- Lowest-cost manual setup: Manual B, if hand operation and a non-tensioned surface are acceptable.
- Affordable motorized screen: Spectrum 2 for a standard-throw projector and a multipurpose room.
- Frequent movie watching in a controlled room: CineTension 2/3 for tab-tensioned flatness.
- Standard-throw control features without tab tension: VMAX2, after verifying trigger compatibility.
- UST projector: Kestrel Tab-Tension CLR 3 or another screen explicitly designed for the projector’s UST geometry.
- Concealed premium installation: Solo 3, with a dealer quote and installation plan.
- Speakers behind the screen: a custom acoustically transparent retractable option such as Seymour AV.
If your theater is dedicated and the screen does not need to disappear, compare fixed-frame options too: a fixed frame may deliver better flatness or value than a retractable design. But when concealment is essential, choose by projector compatibility and room first, then decide how much automation and tensioning justify the added cost.
