The best resettable combination lock depends on what you are securing: the Master Lock 176 is a practical general-purpose outdoor padlock, the Squire CP60CS offers a more protected closed shackle, and the Master Lock 4696D is for checked luggage—not gates or valuable equipment. Resettable locks simplify shared access and code changes, but the number of possible codes does not determine resistance to cutting, prying, or manipulation.

What “resettable” means
A preset lock comes with a supplied code, which may not be changeable. A set-your-own lock lets the owner choose an initial code; a resettable or recodable lock is designed to let the owner change it later. Those terms do not guarantee that every model can be changed in the same way: some require a reset key or pin, while others use a lever or a particular shackle position.
Most mechanical models require the lock to be open and the current combination to be known before resetting. ABUS says its reset key will not work without the current combination (ABUS combination padlocks); Kryptonite likewise says a lock cannot be reset if its current code is unknown (Kryptonite reset instructions). Treat that as a security feature, not a recovery guarantee.

How much does the number of digits matter?
Assuming each wheel can show the digits 0 through 9, three digits allow 1,000 possible codes, four allow 10,000, and five allow 100,000. Master Lock lists 10,000 combinations for the four-digit 176, while Squire lists 100,000 for its five-wheel CP60 (Master Lock 176; Squire CP60).
A larger code space makes casual guessing less likely, but it says little about physical strength. It does not prevent a cutter from attacking an exposed shackle, someone from watching the code being entered, or a mechanical attack on the lock. Prefer three digits only for low-risk convenience; four digits suit many ordinary applications, while five can make sense on larger locks where added dialing effort is acceptable.
Product picks by use case
General outdoor use: Master Lock 176
The 176 combines a 2-inch (51 mm) solid brass body with a 1-inch (25 mm) shackle height and a 5/16-inch (8 mm) hardened-steel shackle. Master Lock specifies a user-settable four-digit code with 10,000 combinations and lists the model for uses including gates and fences (manufacturer specifications). It is a sensible fit for a residential gate, shed, or moderate-risk storage point when its exposed shackle fits the hardware. Do not mistake the brass body or four digits for protection against a determined cutting attack.

Tool-free recoding: Master Lock 878
The 878 offers a four-digit user-set code that can be changed without a combination reset tool. Its 2-inch (51 mm) powder-coated zinc body and 5/16-inch (8 mm) hardened-steel shackle make it a convenience-focused option for ordinary outdoor access management (Master Lock 878). Its main advantage is avoiding a separate reset tool; the exposed shackle and body construction make it a poor substitute for a purpose-built high-security lock.
Coastal exposure: ABUS 180IB
ABUS specifies a forged brass body, stainless-steel shackle and individually resettable four-digit code for the 180IB, which it markets for weather-exposed and marine settings (ABUS 180IB). Those materials make it a logical candidate for a dock, boat, or coastal cabinet where corrosion is a concern. “Weatherproof” is the manufacturer’s positioning, not proof of indefinite operation in saltwater; protect the mechanism from grit and standing water and maintain it appropriately.
More code choices and heavier construction: Squire CP60
The CP60 has a 60 mm body, 10 mm hardened-steel shackle, five wheels, double locking and 100,000 combinations. Squire describes it as fully recodable and gives it a company security rating of 6/10+; the manufacturer’s UK store listed £57.99 when the product information was collected (Squire CP60). The rating is Squire’s own scale, not a direct equivalent to a third-party certification. Choose it where the larger body and five wheels suit the installation; the open shackle leaves more metal accessible than the closed-shackle alternative.

Reduced shackle access: Squire CP60CS
The CP60CS pairs five wheels and 100,000 combinations with a 10 mm closed hardened-steel shackle, double locking and a listed weight of 0.56 kg. Squire gives it a 7/10+ company rating; its UK store listed £68.99 when product information was collected (Squire CP60CS). Enclosing more of the shackle reduces direct access for cutting tools compared with an open-shackle layout, but this is a design advantage rather than proof against every attack. Measure the hasp first: the more protective geometry can have less clearance.

Largest combination padlock here: Squire SHCB75
The SHCB75 has a 75 mm body, five wheels, a rotating closed hardened-steel shackle listed at approximately 12 mm, and a listed weight of 0.69 kg. Squire describes hardened internal parts and assigns a 7/10+ company rating; its UK store listed £97.99 when product information was collected (Squire SHCB75). Its size suits some higher-risk gates or commercial storage, but its price and bulk are substantial, and its short shackle may not pass through the hardware. For a valuable asset facing deliberate attack, compare a commercial keyed lock or managed access system too.
Bicycle access: Kryptonite KryptoLok 990 or 912
The 990 uses a five-digit resettable combination, four-sided 3T manganese-steel links, and a 90 cm chain weighing approximately 5.85 lb. The 912 uses the same general combination-and-chain approach, extends to 120 cm, and weighs approximately 7.35 lb (KryptoLok 990; KryptoLok 912). Pick the 912 only if the extra reach is useful enough to justify the added carry weight. Kryptonite states an anti-theft protection signal for bicycles up to $1,750, subject to its program terms; check eligibility and conditions rather than treating that figure as a guaranteed reimbursement.

For a high-value bicycle, do not choose by combination count alone. Use a purpose-built chain, U-lock or folding lock, and weigh convenience against the threat where the bike is parked.
Checked luggage: Master Lock 4696D
The 4696D is a resettable numeric luggage lock in a TSA-approved format, with an extended-reach shackle (Master Lock luggage combination locks). TSA compatibility means authorized airport security personnel can open the lock with an access key. That convenience does not make it suitable for a gate, bicycle, shed, or valuable storage: luggage locks are not high-security barriers.

Check fit before buying
A lock that cannot pass through the hasp is no use. Measure the shackle diameter, horizontal and vertical clearance, hasp thickness, and the room available to turn the wheels and reach any reset control. Longer open shackles fit awkward hardware but expose more metal; closed shackles protect more of the shackle but restrict clearance. A rotating shackle may complicate cutting access, but it is not a guarantee.

Assess body, shackle and locking features
- Shackle: Look at material, diameter, exposure and tool access—not diameter alone. Hardened or boron steel is intended for stronger physical resistance than a light, exposed shackle; stainless steel is useful where corrosion matters.
- Body: Brass and corrosion-resistant materials can suit weather exposure; lightweight alloy bodies may be adequate for lockers or low-risk cabinets but are not automatically appropriate for valuable outdoor assets.
- Mechanism: Double locking, deadlocking and anti-shim features can help, but attribute protection claims to the manufacturer. For example, Master Lock says its 1177 deadlocking mechanism is designed to resist prying, shimming and rap attacks; this is a manufacturer claim, not independent test evidence (Master Lock 1177).
- Weather protection: Distinguish a weather-resistant claim from tested corrosion performance. Squire says its CP50ATLS has a stainless-steel shackle, protective body and wheel covers, and 312 hours of salt-spray testing; that speaks to corrosion testing, not resistance to physical attack (Squire CP50ATLS).
Match features to the setting
- Locker or indoor cabinet: Prioritize fit, easy dialing and the convenience of sharing a code.
- Residential gate or shed: Check shackle exposure, hasp quality, weather exposure and whether a closed-shackle model fits.
- Marine or coastal location: Favor corrosion-conscious materials and keep the mechanism clear of grit and standing water.
- Shared commercial access: Set a clear owner for code changes, limit who can recode locks and keep a controlled record.
- High-value asset or deliberate threat: Consider a keyed high-security lock or electronic access control, especially where insurance or procurement standards apply.
Reset and manage the code safely
Exact procedures vary by model. Use the instructions for the specific lock rather than forcing a lever or guessing the reset position. Kryptonite publishes model-specific reset guidance and advises registering the combination after changing it (Kryptonite reset instructions).
- Open the lock with the current combination.
- Find the reset control—such as a lever, pin, key, or specified shackle position—in the model instructions.
- Engage it as directed, then set the new code while the lock remains open.
- Return the reset control fully to its normal position.
- Test the new code several times while the lock is still open; scramble the wheels and confirm the old code no longer opens it.
- Record the code securely before closing the lock.
If a new code fails, keep the lock open if possible. Check the alignment marks and the viewing side, ensure no wheel sits between numbers, and confirm the reset control returned fully. Do not force the shackle or reset mechanism; consult the exact model instructions. If the current code has been forgotten, expect that many mechanical locks cannot be reset without it.
- Avoid birthdays, addresses, phone-number fragments and repeated digits.
- Do not write the code on the lock or nearby, or reuse it across unrelated locations.
- Change the code when someone loses authorization, and test every lock after recoding.
- For business use, document who controls changes and keep the record access-controlled.
- Set and test a code with the lock unloaded and open.
When a different kind of lock is the better answer
A combination lock is useful when several people need access, keys are routinely lost, or temporary access makes recoding valuable. A keyed high-security padlock may be more appropriate for expensive assets, controlled key custody, deliberate attack risk, or formal security standards. Electronic access control can add individual credentials, temporary codes, audit trails and remote changes, but brings batteries, connectivity or account dependencies, and possible lockout when power fails. For a simple gate or shed, mechanical access is often less complicated; for a managed facility, electronic controls may justify their overhead.
For a gate or shed, the hasp and its attachment to the structure also matter: upgrading that mounting hardware can be more meaningful than moving from four code wheels to five. For a bicycle, use a purpose-built bicycle lock rather than a small luggage or locker lock.
