For a Makita 18V LXT tool, the right replacement battery is a genuine model listed in that tool’s instruction manual. Makita’s catalog includes 2.0Ah, 3.0Ah, 4.0Ah, 5.0Ah and 6.0Ah options, but a higher-capacity pack is not automatically compatible with every tool. Check your model before buying.
Start with your tool’s battery compatibility
These battery choices are for Makita’s 18V LXT platform; they are not universal replacements for every Makita tool or battery platform. Find the exact tool model on its label, then check the battery-cartridge list in its instruction manual. Makita manuals identify applicable batteries by appliance, and specifications or availability may differ by region. See Makita’s manuals and confirm the battery model against the manual for your tool.
Do not rely on voltage or physical resemblance alone. If the manual does not list a candidate battery, do not assume it is suitable. The same check applies to the charger: confirm the specific battery-and-charger pairing in current Makita documentation. Makita U.S.A. catalog materials list these capacities for the models below. Capacity, expressed in amp-hours (Ah), is one factor in choosing a pack; it does not establish compatibility with a particular tool or guarantee a specific runtime.

Should you choose 5.0Ah or 6.0Ah?
Choose the BL1850B 5.0Ah when your tool manual lists it
The BL1850B is a reasonable model to search for when replacing an 18V LXT battery. Its 5.0Ah rating is a catalog specification, not a promise of a particular number of cuts, fasteners or hours of work. Actual runtime depends on the tool and how it is used; the available manufacturer information does not provide a controlled, cross-tool runtime comparison.

Consider the BL1860B 6.0Ah only if compatible
The BL1860B has the largest capacity among the five models listed above. That alone does not show that it is the best choice for every tool or task. Confirm it appears in your tool’s manual, and compare practical needs such as how long you work between charges with the pack’s documented characteristics.

Makita’s catalog says the BL1850B takes 45 minutes or less to charge and the BL1860B 55 minutes or less with the specified rapid optimum charging setup. These are manufacturer catalog figures, not independent test results or universal charging times; actual charging depends on using the specified compatible setup. Consider a 2.0Ah pack when the manual supports it
The BL1820B is Makita’s listed 2.0Ah option among these models. It may suit a buyer seeking a lower-capacity pack, but the available catalog information does not establish comparative weight or runtime across tools. Verify the model in your manual rather than choosing it based on the capacity figure alone.
Why Makita recommends genuine batteries
Makita warns against non-genuine or altered batteries. Its DML816 instruction manual states: “CAUTION: Only use genuine Makita batteries. Use of non-genuine Makita batteries, or batteries that have been altered, may result in the battery bursting causing fires personal injury and damage. It will also void the Makita warranty for the Makita tool and charger.” This is the manufacturer’s safety and warranty warning; consult the manual supplied for your product and current regional warranty terms. When buying, check that the listing identifies the exact battery model and that the seller and product are genuine. Online stock, seller identity and listing authenticity can change, so verify them at the time of purchase rather than assuming a listing is authorized.

What to do if the battery’s authenticity or performance is in doubt
