There is no single best 6V lithium battery: the right choice depends on whether your device takes a disposable CR-P2 or 2CR5 battery, or needs a rechargeable 6.4V LiFePO4 pack to replace a 6V sealed lead-acid (SLA) battery. For an exact CR-P2 replacement, Panasonic CR-P2 is a strong default; for a 2CR5 compartment, choose a 2CR5 such as Panasonic’s. For an SLA replacement, consider a LiFePO4 pack only after checking its charging requirements, dimensions, terminals, polarity and discharge rating. These battery types are not interchangeable just because their labels say “6V.”

Quick picks by battery type

  • Best CR-P2 replacement: Panasonic CR-P2, when the device specifies CR-P2 or a compatible 223-format cell. Panasonic lists 6V, 1,550mAh and dimensions of about 35 × 19.5 × 36mm.
  • Best 2CR5 replacement: Panasonic 2CR5, for equipment specifying 2CR5, DL245 or EL245. It is a distinct physical format, about 45 × 17 × 34mm.
  • Rechargeable small-SLA replacement to consider: Battery Mart LF-LA6V5.4A, a 6.4V nominal, 5.4Ah LiFePO4 pack listed at 32.4Wh. Verify fit, load and charger compatibility before buying.
  • For buyers prioritizing published technical data: the Powersync/Power-Sonic 6.4V, 4.5Ah LiFePO4 data sheet specifies charging details and cycle-life claims under stated conditions. Confirm the exact model is available and suitable for your system.
  • Another SLA-style LiFePO4 option: Mighty Max ML4-6LI. Its listing describes a BMS and claims a 2,500-cycle life; those are manufacturer claims, not independently verified results.

These are different product categories, not a ranked list of interchangeable batteries. If the device uses a CR-P2 or 2CR5, do not substitute an SLA-sized rechargeable pack. If it uses a rechargeable SLA battery, do not install a disposable camera battery.

What “6V lithium” can mean

The phrase usually refers to one of two very different products:

Battery type Chemistry Rechargeable? Common examples and uses
Primary lithium Lithium manganese dioxide No CR-P2 and 2CR5 batteries for cameras and some locks, alarms and electronics
Rechargeable lithium replacement LiFePO4 (lithium iron phosphate) Yes, with a compatible charging system 6.4V packs in cases intended to replace small 6V SLA batteries
Custom rechargeable pack NMC or another lithium-ion chemistry Yes, with chemistry-specific protection and charging Purpose-built packs for projects and equipment
Sealed lead-acid (SLA) Lead-acid Yes, with a suitable charger Legacy backup, lighting and other low-voltage equipment

CR-P2 and 2CR5 are disposable primary batteries. A 6.4V LiFePO4 pack is rechargeable and commonly marketed as a replacement for a rechargeable 6V SLA battery. The nominal voltage is not the whole compatibility story: a rechargeable pack also has a higher charging voltage, and devices and chargers can respond differently to its voltage curve.

Choose a primary battery only by exact format

Panasonic CR-P2

For a device that calls for CR-P2, Panasonic lists a 6V lithium-manganese-dioxide battery with 1,550mAh capacity, approximately 35 × 19.5 × 36mm dimensions and a 20mA continuous standard drain. Its stated operating range is −40°C to 70°C; the product information lists IEC 60086-4 and UL 1642. Consult the manufacturer specification and the device manual for the relevant operating conditions and current requirement.

Panasonic 2CR5

For equipment specifying 2CR5, Panasonic’s 6V primary lithium battery is the format to match. It measures approximately 45 × 17 × 34mm and weighs about 38g, according to its product specification. Its contacts and shape differ from CR-P2, so one is not a physical substitute for the other.

Cross-reference labels can help identify equivalents but do not replace checking the equipment manual and battery dimensions. Panasonic lists CR-P2 equivalents including EL223, DL223 and 223A; 2CR5 equivalents include EL245 and DL245. See its format and cross-reference overview.

Primary lithium batteries are useful where long storage, low self-discharge, light weight or operation across a broad temperature range matters and the device is designed for that exact cell. Panasonic describes storage capability of up to 10 years under unused, room-temperature conditions for its cylindrical primary lithium products; that is a storage claim, not a promise of 10 years in an operating device. Never recharge CR-P2, 2CR5 or another primary lithium battery.

When a 6.4V LiFePO4 pack may replace a 6V SLA battery

A two-cell LiFePO4 pack is commonly rated at 6.4V nominal and reaches a higher voltage when fully charged. For example, Battery Mart lists 7.2V as the maximum charge voltage for its 6.4V LF-LA6V5.4A pack. A comparable Power-Sonic/Powersync data sheet specifies 7.3 ± 0.2V and CC/CV charging. The exact limit and charge procedure depend on the battery; use its current documentation, not a generic assumption about “6V.”

Talentcell 6V 6Ah LiFePO4 Battery Pack LF060A1, 2000+ Cycles Rechargeable Lithium Iron Phosphate Battery with Charger for Kids Ride On Toys, Deer Feeder, Game Hunting Camera, Lantern and More
  • Long Cycle Life, 2000+ Cycles. 6V Lithium iron phosphate battery has high energy density, no memory effect. Please check to see if the voltage is right for your device before you order. Not work for the fountain.
  • High Capacity: 6.4V 6000mAh 38.4Wh. Output voltage: 7.3V-5V (Nominal: 6.4V). Output Current: 10A Max. The output voltage is output directly from 2S Li-Ion battery by through the PCM, so the output voltage is not constant.
  • Appearance shape, size of the product is similar to the specifications of traditional lead-acid batteries, so you can be installed directly instead of the customary lead-acid battery. Compatible with Kids Ride On Car, 6V Battery Powered Electric Vehicle.
  • Compared with lead-acid battery, the LiFePO4 battery has higher capacity, lighter and much better. Lithium battery have excellent characteristics, for example: large capacity, small volume, light weight, etc. It will bring a very convenient experience to users.
  • Package content: 1x 6V LiFePO4 battery pack, 1x lifepo4 battery charger, 2x female spade connector wire 18AWG, 1x DC female plug with battery clamp.

A 6.4V label is therefore normal for this type of replacement, but it does not prove that a particular device or charger is compatible. Motors, incandescent bulbs, sensitive electronics and built-in charging circuits may behave differently with LiFePO4’s discharge curve than with SLA. Check the equipment maker’s guidance, especially for safety-critical devices, and do not treat “drop-in replacement” as a guarantee of universal compatibility.

Capacity and energy

Amp-hours (Ah) and milliamp-hours (mAh) describe charge capacity; 1Ah equals 1,000mAh. Watt-hours (Wh) describe energy and make comparisons across different voltages more useful. A rough calculation is:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Watt-hours ≈ nominal voltage × amp-hours

For example, 6V × 1.55Ah is about 9.3Wh for the CR-P2. A 6.4V × 5.4Ah calculation is about 34.6Wh, while Battery Mart lists 32.4Wh for its pack. For a specific product, use its published rating; nominal-voltage arithmetic is an estimate, not a guarantee of usable energy. Capacity results vary with discharge rate, temperature, cutoff voltage and test conditions. A bigger Ah figure also does not guarantee the pack can supply a device’s peak current.

Protection, current and cycle-life claims

For rechargeable packs, look for documentation covering overcharge, over-discharge, short-circuit and overcurrent protection, cell balancing, temperature limits, and continuous and peak discharge current. A battery management system (BMS) may provide some protections, but the product documentation should say which ones; BMS presence does not make an unsuitable charger acceptable or guarantee enough output for a motor’s startup surge.

Manufacturers publish cycle-life claims under particular conditions. Power-Sonic’s data sheet claims more than 10,000 cycles at 50% depth of discharge, more than 6,000 at 80% and more than 2,000 at 100%. Mighty Max’s listing claims 2,500 cycles for the ML4-6LI. These figures are not universal expectations: actual life depends on the pack, charge method, depth of discharge, current, temperature and cutoff settings.

Note: It is recommended to use a LiFePo4-specific charger, as a fully automatic SLA charger may not fully charge the battery.

Charger compatibility is a key safety check

Use a charger specified for a two-cell LiFePO4/6.4V battery or the charger recommended by the battery maker. Before connecting it, confirm charge voltage and current, connector, polarity and termination behavior against the battery documentation. A generic 6V lead-acid charger may not have an appropriate LiFePO4 profile. A pack’s built-in BMS is not a substitute for the correct charger.

Never connect a charger to a CR-P2, 2CR5 or other non-rechargeable primary lithium battery. For any rechargeable system, do not connect packs in series or parallel unless the specific manufacturer permits it and provides instructions. Tenergy warns that its 6.4V SLA-replacement packs are not intended to be connected in series or parallel during use; do not generalize compatibility from one brand to another.

How to choose a replacement

  1. Read the original battery label and device manual. Record the exact part number, chemistry, nominal voltage and whether the original is rechargeable.
  2. Confirm the physical format. Measure the old battery and compare manufacturer dimensions. Check case height, terminal type, connector and polarity—not just voltage and capacity.
  3. Check load requirements. Look for continuous and peak current, particularly for motors, lamps and equipment with startup surges. Confirm the battery’s documented discharge capability exceeds the real requirement.
  4. Check charging before choosing a rechargeable pack. Determine whether the device has a built-in charger and whether its charging profile is approved for that LiFePO4 battery. Otherwise, select a compatible charger specified by the battery manufacturer.
  5. Review operating conditions. Compare the product’s discharge and charging temperature limits with the installation environment. Cold-weather discharge capability does not automatically mean charging is allowed at low temperatures.
  6. Check documentation and seller support. Look for a datasheet, stated protections, transport documentation such as UN38.3 where relevant, warranty and a clear return policy. Buy primary cells from a reputable source and check for freshness and traceability.
  7. Compare the real trade-off. LiFePO4 can reduce weight and suit repeated cycling, while SLA may cost less upfront where weight and frequent cycling are unimportant. A conventional 6V SLA replacement was listed at $11.30 by OSI Batteries when the supplied research was retrieved; price and availability change, so check current listings rather than relying on that snapshot.

Installation and troubleshooting

Before replacing a rechargeable battery, photograph the wiring, disconnect power as the equipment manual directs, and verify polarity from the product documentation. Inspect the connector and case for damage. Use the approved charger, charge on a stable, nonflammable surface and monitor the first charge. Test the device under its normal load.

  • It does not fit: Recheck format, dimensions, terminal tabs, connector and case height. A CR-P2 is not a substitute for a 2CR5, and an SLA-sized case may still differ in terminals or dimensions.
  • The device shuts down early: Possible causes include a low-voltage cutoff designed for SLA, a BMS disconnect under peak load, insufficient current capability or a capacity rating measured under different conditions. Check the pack’s discharge rating and the equipment’s load requirements; do not bypass protection.
  • The battery gets hot while charging: Stop charging and disconnect power if it is safe to do so. Wrong voltage, reversed polarity, a damaged pack or a short may be involved. Do not resume charging a hot, swollen, damaged or leaking battery, and do not bypass its BMS.
  • Cold-weather use: Panasonic lists an operating range of −40°C to 70°C for CR-P2; confirm the specific cell’s conditions in its documentation. For rechargeable LiFePO4, check separate charge and discharge limits. Some packs may allow cold discharge but prohibit charging below freezing.
  • Series or parallel setup: Do not combine batteries unless the exact pack documentation explicitly permits the configuration and explains how to do it.

For medical, alarm, emergency or other safety-critical equipment, use only a battery and charging arrangement approved by the equipment manufacturer. If the required current, charger profile or compatibility is unclear, ask the equipment or battery manufacturer before installation.
