For a dedicated sunrise alarm, the Lumie Bodyclock Shine 300 is the strongest all-round pick in this guide: it offers a configurable sunrise and sunset, adjustable light intensity, sounds, FM radio, and daily or weekly alarms. Choose Hatch Restore 3 for a broader sleep routine, a simpler Lumie for fewer features, or smart lighting if you already use Philips Hue. A sunrise clock can make waking gentler, but it is not a guaranteed sleep aid or a substitute for clinical light therapy.

Prices and availability vary by market. Lumie’s U.S. site listed the Shine 300 at $169, the Glow 150 at $139, and the Rise 100 at $109 when checked for this guide; confirm current stock and terms before buying. This is a product-and-evidence guide, not a claim of hands-on testing.

At a glance

Pick Best for Why consider it
Lumie Bodyclock Shine 300 Best dedicated wake-up light for most people 15–90-minute sunrise and sunset, adjustable light, several sounds, FM radio, and daily or weekly alarms.
Hatch Restore 3 Bedtime routines and sound content Combines sunrise alarm, wind-down lighting, sounds, and guided routines; check which content requires a subscription.
Lumie Rise 100 Simple, phone-free setup A basic 30-minute sunrise, snooze, and beep alarm without a large feature set.
Lumie Glow 150 Lower-cost sunrise and sunset features Offers 20-, 30-, or 45-minute sunrise options, sounds, and night-light settings.
Philips SmartSleep HF3650/60 Traditional feature-rich clock, where available Simulated sunrise and sunset, multiple light and sound settings, and RelaxBreathe; availability varies by market.
Philips Hue Twilight or a Hue light routine People already invested in Hue Flexible smart-home schedules, but more dependent on connected hardware and apps than a one-box clock.
Clinical light-therapy lamp People seeking treatment for seasonal affective disorder Choose an appropriate therapeutic product and clinical guidance rather than assuming a bedside alarm is equivalent.

What a light alarm clock does—and what it does not

A sunrise alarm, also called a wake-up light, gradually brightens before a set wake time. Some devices also offer a sunset simulation that dims the light at bedtime. A smart lamp can imitate parts of these routines, but may not include a clock, speaker, dependable backup alarm, or bedside controls.

“Sunrise” describes a simulation, not actual sunlight. How noticeable it is depends on the lamp’s brightness and diffuser, distance and angle from the bed, room darkness, and whether the sleeper’s face is exposed to the light. A small glowing ring and a large, bright diffuser should not be assumed to perform alike. If you are a heavy sleeper, light alone may not wake you.

#1 Best Overall
Odokee Sunrise Alarm Clock White Noise Machine: Natural Wake Up Light
  • Gentle Wake Up with Sunrise Alarm Clock: The sunrise simulation gradually brightens over a customizable 5-60 minutes before your set alarm time, aligning with your circadian rhythm for a peaceful, stress-free start to your day.
  • Soothing Sound Machine for Better Sleep: Choose from 25 calming sounds, including white/pink/brown/blue noise and natural sounds like waves and rain. Set the sleep timer for a restful slumber.
  • Immersive Bluetooth Audio: Stream music, podcasts, or audiobooks via Bluetooth. The 5W stereo speaker delivers clear sound quality, creating an immersive listening experience.
  • 0-100% Dimmable Digital Clock & Night Light: Adjust the clock’s display to the perfect brightness with a full-range dimmer. The soft night light features 12 color options including a sunset light, perfect for reading or relaxing before bed.
  • Personalize Your Wake-Up Experience: Customize your morning with 7 alarm sounds and adjustable volume. Choose from 3 wake-up modes: gentle light + sound, just the alarm, or sunrise light without sound for a natural wake-up experience.

A bedside wake-up light is also different from a light-therapy lamp. Therapy products are intended for planned bright-light exposure; the effect depends on factors such as illuminance at the eyes, distance, duration, spectrum, and timing. A product’s advertised maximum lux is not meaningful for comparison unless the measurement distance and conditions are given.

How the leading options differ

Lumie Bodyclock Shine 300: best dedicated all-rounder

The Shine 300 is a good fit if you want a purpose-built clock with more control than an entry model but do not need a subscription-based sleep-content ecosystem. Lumie lists sunrise and sunset durations from 15 to 90 minutes, adjustable intensity, multiple sounds, FM radio, and daily or weekly alarms. Its U.S. site listed it at $169; check the current price, stock, warranty, and included features in your region on Lumie’s wake-up-light range.

Choose it if: you want a standalone wake-up light with a range of ramp lengths and sound backup. Look elsewhere if: you want an extensive app-led sleep library, or if physical controls and setup are your top priority; controls on some premium Bodyclock models have been described as unintuitive in independent coverage.

  • CLINICALLY PROVEN*: Philips wake-up lights are recommended by physicians and pharmacists for establishing a healthy sleep and wake routine**
  • PERSONALIZATION: Simulated sunset and sunrise and choice of 5 different natural wake-up sounds
  • SMART FEATURES: FM radio, tap snooze and automatic dimmable display
  • MOOD AND ENERGY: proven to give you an easy and energetic wake-up and improve your mood in the morning***
  • Can be used as a bedside reading lamp with 20 brightness settings.

Hatch Restore 3: best for a broader sleep routine

Hatch Restore 3 combines sunrise-alarm lighting with wind-down routines and sound content. It is better understood as a connected sleep system than as a simple clock. Check Hatch’s current checkout and support information for what works without an account or subscription, which content is included, and whether basic alarm functions remain available without a paid plan. Do not assume the full library is included with the hardware.

Choose it if: routines and audio are as important as the morning light. Skip it if: you want a device that is plainly usable without an app, account, or ongoing content costs.

Lumie Rise 100 and Glow 150: simpler, lower-cost choices

The Rise 100 is the more basic option: Lumie lists a 30-minute sunrise, tap snooze, and beep alarm. The Glow 150 adds sunrise choices of 20, 30, or 45 minutes, sunset features, sounds, and night-light options. Lumie’s U.S. listings showed $109 and $139 respectively; see the manufacturer’s current collection for availability and specifications.

Philips SmartSleep HF3650/60: a traditional alternative where sold

Philips describes the HF3650/60 SmartSleep as offering sunrise and sunset simulation, multiple light and sound settings, and RelaxBreathe. It may suit someone who wants an established, dedicated bedside device rather than an app-centered system. Model availability is not consistent across markets, so verify that this exact model is currently sold and supported where you live.

Philips Hue Twilight and other smart-light routines

A Hue lamp or programmable bulb can gradually brighten on a schedule and connect with existing smart-home routines. That flexibility is useful if you already own the compatible equipment or want several room lights to change together. A standalone sunrise clock is usually simpler: it puts a diffuser, alarm, and bedside controls in one device. Smart lighting may require a compatible lamp or bulb, app, network, and sometimes a bridge; a bulb inside a shaded fixture may also deliver little light toward the sleeper. Confirm what happens to the routine if Wi-Fi, the app, or a hub is unavailable. For a product comparison reference, see The Independent’s wake-up-light roundup.

What the evidence says about dawn simulation

Small studies have reported increased arousal or cortisol response, better subjective alertness, or improvement in some measures of sleep inertia after simulated dawn. Results are not uniform: studies examine different people, light schedules, and outcomes, and at least one study in older adults did not find a significant alertness benefit. For examples, see research on cortisol response, sleep inertia and performance, artificial dawn and sleep inertia, and older adults.

These findings support a cautious conclusion: a gradual light cue may help some people feel more alert or make waking feel less abrupt, but it does not guarantee improved sleep or solve persistent difficulty waking. Studies generally test a specific light exposure—not every current retail clock—and do not establish that one of the products above is clinically superior to another.

A sunrise alarm is not automatically SAD treatment

Do not buy a standard wake-up clock on the assumption that it treats seasonal affective disorder (SAD). In one controlled study involving 95 people with SAD, a 1.5-hour simulated dawn peaking at 250 lux performed better than placebo. That result does not establish that a consumer clock with different brightness, timing, spectrum, or placement provides equivalent treatment. Read the study at PubMed.

If you are seeking treatment for SAD, ask a clinician about an appropriate light-therapy device and routine. People with bipolar disorder, eye disease, photosensitivity, or medication that increases light sensitivity should seek medical advice before using therapeutic bright light.

How to choose one that suits your room and routine

  • Ask for useful brightness information. Look for maximum lux and the distance at which it was measured; eye-level exposure will be lower than readings taken close to a diffuser. Color temperature or spectrum, diffuser size, and adjustable intensity are useful too.
  • Choose a ramp you can adjust. Models in this group offer ramps from about 15 to 90 minutes. If a shorter ramp feels ineffective, a longer 45–60-minute rise is a reasonable setting to try. Seasonal changes in daylight and bedroom darkness may change what feels comfortable.
  • Check sound and backup behavior. Find out whether you can use light without sound, how loud the alarm gets, whether it starts gently, and whether alarms continue without Wi-Fi or an app. Keep another alarm for flights, medication schedules, safety-critical shifts, childcare, or if you regularly sleep through ordinary alarms.
  • Test the controls in your mind before buying. Can you set an alarm, snooze, dim the display, and change a weekday schedule without opening a phone? Check whether setup requires an account, whether controls are tactile and visible, and what happens after power loss.
  • Count recurring costs and connectivity. Separate included hardware features from trial content, paid libraries, or optional app services. Verify which functions work offline and whether the alarm is stored on the device.
  • Account for the bedroom. Consider distance and orientation to the pillow, blackout curtains, a partner with a different schedule, pets or children, cable reach, plug type, and any standby display light. A broad diffuser may disturb a partner even if it helps you.

Set up a sunrise alarm and evaluate it safely

  1. Place it where its light can reach your face indirectly and comfortably; avoid an angle that shines uncomfortably into your eyes.
  2. Start with a 30-minute ramp and the brightest setting that feels comfortable.
  3. If it is not noticeable, adjust placement and try a longer 45–60-minute ramp before concluding the device is unsuitable.
  4. Keep an audible alarm enabled during the first week. Test the routine on a non-critical morning and retain a backup until you trust it.
  5. Use sunset mode only if it supports, rather than delays, your bedtime. Turn off or dim the display and status lights if they disturb sleep.
  6. If sound and light still do not wake you reliably, consider a vibrating alarm or bed shaker rather than relying on a sunrise clock alone.

These are practical setup suggestions, not a substitute for a device manual. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions where they differ.

Which type of buyer should choose what?

  • “I just want a gentler alarm.” Start with a dedicated clock such as the Shine 300, or the Rise 100 if you want basic features.
  • “I want bedtime sounds and routines too.” Consider Hatch Restore 3, after checking subscription and offline terms.
  • “I do not want an app.” Favor a standalone model with physical controls and confirm alarm setup and operation do not depend on an account or Wi-Fi.
  • “I already own Hue.” A Hue routine may be the economical, flexible choice if you are comfortable with the ecosystem and have a reliable sound-alarm backup.
  • “I sleep through everything.” Do not count on light alone. Use a sound alarm and consider vibration or a bed shaker; keep a second alarm for important commitments.
  • “I share a bedroom.” Check whether the light can be directed toward you, lower its intensity if necessary, or consider a vibration-based wake-up method.
  • “I may have SAD.” Seek clinical guidance on a therapy lamp and routine; do not treat a consumer sunrise alarm as an equivalent.
  • “I need accessibility support.” Check tactile control access, display readability, maximum sound level, and compatibility with vibration or bed-shaker accessories. Many sunrise clocks alone will not meet hearing-access needs.

Bottom line

Choose the Lumie Shine 300 if you want a flexible, dedicated sunrise clock with sound options and no obvious need for a content subscription. Choose Hatch Restore 3 when bedtime routines and audio content justify a connected system. For a simpler purchase, the Lumie Rise 100 or Glow 150 may be enough; for existing Hue users, a smart-light routine can work if its connectivity and separate alarm needs are acceptable. None is a guaranteed fix for waking problems, and none should be assumed to replace clinical light therapy.
