There is no proven detergent that is best for every colored garment. To limit fading and dye transfer, follow each care label, sort by color and fabric, choose a detergent suited to the load, and measure the dose from its label. Persil Original Ultra Concentrated is one example whose manufacturer says its formula contains fabric-care ingredients intended to help prevent fading; that is a product claim, not an independent comparison showing it outperforms other detergents.
How to choose a detergent for colored clothes
Start with the garment, not a “color-safe” slogan on a detergent bottle. The Federal Trade Commission says care instructions must have a reasonable basis. Labels on garments that are not colorfast should include a warning such as “Wash with like colors” or “Wash separately.” Follow those directions before selecting a wash cycle, temperature, or bleach treatment. For ordinary washable loads, select a detergent form you can dose correctly and use consistently. The American Cleaning Institute (ACI) describes liquid, powder, concentrated, fragrance-free or dye-free detergents, and packets as available categories. Persil’s U.S. product page says its Original Ultra Concentrated detergent has fabric-care ingredients intended to help prevent fading. Liquid, powder, or pod: which form should you choose?
Detergent format is mainly a practical choice; the evidence available here does not establish that one format preserves color better than the others. Consumer Reports’ buying guide, updated February 14, 2025, describes liquid, powder, pod, and sheet formats and reports significant performance differences among detergents in its tests, but it does not provide a color-retention winner in the material cited here. - Liquid: A flexible option for routine loads and pretreating when the product label allows it. Measure according to the package directions.
- Powder: Another general-load option; use the package instructions for dosing and handling.
- Pods or packets: Premeasured for a specified use, so check the label for load size and instructions rather than adding extra by guesswork.
- Fragrance-free or dye-free: A category ACI identifies for shoppers seeking those attributes. These terms alone do not establish superior color retention.
Do not compare products by price per load or assume a color-care advantage from format alone without current package details and relevant testing.

How to wash colored clothes with less risk of fading
- Read the care label. Follow its instructions for washing, temperature, and any bleach restrictions. Sort garments according to both their colors and care requirements.
- Separate likely dye bleeders. ACI advises washing new items separately the first few times to help remove excess dye. Also heed any label warning to wash separately or with like colors. ACI laundering problems and solutions
- Choose a suitable water temperature. Cooler water can help limit color loss when the garment’s care directions permit it. The label takes priority; do not substitute a cold wash if the garment requires another method.
- Measure the detergent dose. Use the detergent’s label directions for the load rather than estimating. Concentrated products may have different dosing instructions from other detergents.
- Turn garments inside out as a friction-reduction measure. Electrolux recommends turning clothes inside out as part of its color-care guidance. This is a care tip, not a guarantee against fading. Electrolux ColourCare information
Is color-safe bleach a detergent?
No. Color-safe bleach is an optional additive or stain-removal product, not a substitute for detergent. Check both the garment’s care label and the additive’s instructions before using it. Clorox recommends testing Clorox 2 for Colors on a hidden area: apply a drop, test all colors in the item, wait five minutes, rinse, let the area dry fully, and inspect for a color change. Do not use bleach or a pretreatment on colored fabric without checking the relevant labels and testing as directed. A product described as color-safe does not remove the need to verify that a particular garment can tolerate it.

What color-safe claims and test figures actually establish
Marketing language, detergent performance testing, and a formal colorfastness standard answer different questions. A product claim is not a comparative ranking, and a standard’s test criteria do not show that every product on the market has passed them.
- Manufacturer claims: Persil describes ingredients intended to help prevent fading. That wording does not establish how it compares with other detergents.
- Consumer Reports testing: Its buying guide updated February 14, 2025 reports significant performance differences among detergents, but the cited information does not establish a color-retention winner.
- Green Seal GS-51: The 2024 edition specifies demonstrating detergent colorfastness using ASTM D4265 or AATCC 124 machine washing, with color change assessed after five wash cycles. This is a standard criterion, not evidence that a particular named detergent met it.
- Electrolux’s figure: The manufacturer describes a test of polyester lasting “50 washing cycles in 30 degrees” for Electrolux ColourCare. It concerns that appliance’s test, not detergents as a class or a detergent comparison.
Can detergent restore clothes that have already faded?
Do not expect detergent to make unstable dye colorfast or restore color that has already been lost. ACI identifies unstable dye, hot water, and improper bleach use as possible causes of color loss and notes that some fading is irreversible. Cooler water where permitted and testing before bleach or pretreatment can reduce avoidable risk, but they cannot guarantee that a garment will keep its original color.
