For most U.S. front doors, the Schlage Encode Plus is the best all-around code lock if you want a dependable keypad, built-in Wi-Fi, Apple Home Key, remote code management and a conventional key backup. The Aqara U100 is the better value when fingerprint, NFC and USB-C emergency power matter more than a simpler setup. Yale’s Assure Lock 2 is a strong choice for configuration flexibility, while Schlage Sense Pro and Aqara U400 target premium early adopters.
“Best” does not mean the lock with the most unlocking methods. It means a suitable deadbolt, reliable local PIN entry, a practical emergency fallback, correct door fit and smart features your household will actually use.

The Encode Plus combines a built-in keypad, built-in Wi-Fi, Schlage’s app, Apple Home Key and a traditional keyway. That makes it unusually complete for an exterior entry door: family members and guests can use PINs, Apple users can tap an iPhone or Apple Watch, and the mechanical key remains available if electronics fail. Schlage’s product information specifies four AA batteries, up to 100 codes and a manufacturer-stated battery estimate of up to six months under typical use (product details). Built-in Wi-Fi avoids buying a separate bridge, but it also consumes more power than a lock that communicates only locally. Apple Home Key is a major advantage for Apple households and little benefit to an Android-first home.
Buy it if: you want a mainstream connected deadbolt, Home Key and a key backup in one unit. Skip it if: you only need an offline PIN lock or want the lowest ownership cost.
Aqara U100: best feature-rich value
The Aqara U100 adds fingerprint entry, PINs, one-time and recurring codes, NFC access, Apple Home Key, a mechanical key and USB-C emergency power. Aqara’s U.S. store showed $189.99 when checked. It stores up to 50 fingerprints and gives households more ways to enter than most locks at this price.

The trade-off is system complexity. Aqara states that an Aqara hub is needed for some remote, automation and Matter functions; Apple Home remote control and automations have their own Apple home-hub requirements. Local keypad, fingerprint and key operation should be considered separately from cloud features. Aqara says the outer panel is IP65-rated and cites up to eight months of battery life under a stated usage assumption. That is not a head-to-head laboratory result against Schlage’s estimate.
Aqara describes the U100 as meeting the same safety standard as BHMA Level 3. Treat that as a manufacturer statement about physical performance, not a complete judgment about account security, software, installation or the door frame.
Buy it if: fingerprint, NFC and multiple code types matter and you accept a hub for advanced features. Skip it if: you want one simple app and no additional ecosystem hardware.

Yale Assure Lock 2: best for choosing a precise configuration
Yale Assure Lock 2 is a family, not one uniform product. Yale offers different keyway, touchscreen, Wi-Fi, Matter, Z-Wave and Home Key configurations. A comparison that lists one universal set of features can lead you to the wrong SKU.
Its attraction is modular choice and screwdriver-based replacement of a compatible deadbolt. Before buying, write down the complete model number and confirm whether that exact package includes a keyway, Wi-Fi or bridge, Matter support, Home Key and the emergency method you want.
Schlage Sense Pro and Aqara U400: premium alternatives
Schlage lists the Sense Pro at a $399 MSRP and positions it around newer connectivity and digital-key standards. It may suit early adopters, but its premium price and shorter market history make the Encode Plus a more established general recommendation. Verify current Matter, Thread, battery and backup-entry details for the exact model.

Independent coverage describes the Aqara U400 as a Matter-over-Thread lock with keypad, fingerprint access, rechargeable power and Apple-oriented proximity features. Approach-based unlocking can be convenient, but it also deserves careful control testing. Availability and regional support should be confirmed before treating it as a primary recommendation.
Basic keypad versus smart code lock
A basic keypad deadbolt accepts a PIN locally and usually has no app, cloud account, remote unlocking or activity history. It is often the right answer for a side door, garage entry, rental or household that wants fewer failure modes.

A Bluetooth lock normally communicates with a phone nearby. It uses less power than always-connected Wi-Fi, while remote control may require a bridge or hub. A Wi-Fi lock can usually be managed remotely without that separate bridge, but it uses more battery and depends more heavily on the vendor’s app and cloud. A Matter-over-Thread lock can provide local-oriented interoperability, yet still needs a compatible Matter controller and Thread border router for the desired ecosystem. Matter does not guarantee that fingerprints, passcodes, logs and auto-unlock appear identically in Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa and SmartThings.

What to evaluate before buying
1. Physical security
Look for ANSI/BHMA certification or clear manufacturer documentation, but do not confuse a deadbolt rating with total security. A stronger lock cannot compensate for a weak door, short strike screws, a damaged frame or poor alignment. Electronic access control and forced-entry resistance are separate questions. Keyless does not mean unpickable, unhackable or automatically bump-proof.
2. Code-entry quality
PIN entry should work locally, even when the internet is unavailable. Prefer individual user codes, temporary or recurring codes and an audit history over one shared household code. Check code capacity for the exact model rather than relying on “many users” language. Physical buttons provide tactile feedback in darkness, cold and gloves; touchscreens look cleaner and may offer anti-peep entry but can be slower with wet fingers or poor visibility.
3. Backup and failure resilience
Ask what happens after a dead battery, failed motor, lost phone or cloud outage. A keyway is the simplest fallback. An exterior emergency-power port is useful but still requires a cable or power bank. Schlage’s Encode Plus uses a physical key. Aqara’s U100 provides both a mechanical key and USB-C emergency power. Keep the key somewhere accessible but not obvious at the door, and practice the emergency procedure before a lockout.
4. Connectivity and privacy
Separate three functions: local physical entry, local smart-home control and remote cloud control. A Wi-Fi outage may stop notifications and remote unlock while PIN entry continues, but verify this for the exact model. Use a unique manufacturer-account password and multifactor authentication where available. Delete former occupants and service providers immediately, and never reuse a lock code used for an alarm, garage or financial account.
5. Door compatibility
Measure door thickness, backset, bore diameter, edge bore, interior thumb-turn clearance and frame alignment. U.S. deadbolts commonly use a 2⅜- or 2¾-inch backset. Aqara lists a 60- or 70-mm backset, 35–55-mm door thickness and a 54-mm bore for the U100. Confirm that your door uses a compatible single-cylinder deadbolt and that exterior electronics are suitable for rain, freezing temperatures, direct sun or coastal salt air.
Which entry methods are genuinely useful?
- PIN: the most versatile choice for family, children, cleaners and contractors.
- Physical key: protects against battery, motor, app and cloud failures.
- Fingerprint: fast, but affected by wet, dirty or injured fingers and sensor design.
- Apple Home Key: excellent for iPhone and Apple Watch households; remote functions may need an Apple home hub.
- NFC card or tag: helpful for children and users who do not want a phone or memorized PIN.
- App: convenient for administration, but should not be your only dependable entry route.
- Voice or approach unlocking: useful in limited situations, but assess accidental activation and privacy risks carefully.
Installation and setup checklist
- Measure the door and verify the exact model’s requirements.
- Confirm the existing deadbolt and check that its bolt moves freely by hand.
- Install with the door open; correct warped doors and strike alignment first.
- Insert batteries only after the mechanical parts are aligned.
- Complete handing or calibration if the manual requests it.
- Create a unique programming or master code, then individual codes for each person.
- Set auto-lock only after the door consistently closes and latches.
- Test repeated locking and unlocking with the door open.
- Test keypad entry without Wi-Fi if the manufacturer documents local operation.
- Test the key, USB-C power or other emergency method.
- Pair remote services only after local operation is reliable.
- Record the model number, battery type and emergency procedure; follow the current manufacturer manual and support instructions.
Special situations
Renters: obtain permission, retain the original hardware and consider a retrofit that does not permanently alter the door. Short-term rentals: require unique expiring or scheduled codes, remote administration and useful access logs; never share an owner code. Children and older adults: favor tactile or high-contrast keypads, NFC or fingerprints, while retaining a key or emergency-power plan. Cold, wet or coastal locations: check the rating for the exterior panel specifically; IP65 does not mean every installed component is weatherproof. Fire and egress: never use a lock that violates local fire or exit requirements or prevents quick interior escape.
