Airrex portable air conditioners are commercial spot coolers, not low-cost household units. For many commercial spaces that need substantial cooling on 120-volt service, the HSC-18R is the most balanced starting point: it is listed at 16,800 BTU/h, up to 600 square feet, and 59 dBA. But capacity is only part of the decision. Circuit requirements, heat load, exhaust routing, noise, condensate handling, and the unit’s 175-pound weight all matter. If you are cooling a typical bedroom or living room, a consumer portable AC or permanent mini-split may be a better fit.
Airrex models at a glance
Airrex’s lineup is aimed at temporary or localized cooling in commercial and industrial settings such as server rooms, workshops, warehouses, retail spaces, and production areas. Its cooling-only HSC range spans roughly 12,000 to 60,000 BTU/h. The AHSC range adds heat-pump heating, while water-cooled models such as the HWC-19P address sites where hot-air exhaust is difficult. Specifications, prices, and availability below are distributor listings observed August 18, 2026; verify them before ordering.

Which Airrex is best for your job?
- Small commercial room or localized cooling: HSC-12R. At 12,000 BTU/h and 120 volts, it is the entry point to the HSC line. Its listed $2,503.85 price is the lowest in the range. Consider it for a modest server room, office, or work area when a commercial unit is justified and the heat load is controlled. See HSC-12R specifications.
- Best all-around balance: HSC-18R. Its 16,800 BTU/h capacity, 600-square-foot listed coverage, and 120-volt supply make it a practical starting point for many commercial spot-cooling jobs. It is listed at 59 dBA and weighs about 175 pounds. It requires a 20-amp circuit, so “120 volt” does not mean it can run from any convenient outlet. See HSC-18R specifications.
- Intermediate option: HSC-14R. It provides 13,600 BTU/h and lists 500 square feet on 120 volts. At $3,665.34, it costs substantially more than the HSC-12R for a modest capacity increase; compare it closely with both neighboring models rather than assuming it is the value choice. Check the current catalog.
- More capacity where 208–230 volts is available: HSC-24R. It delivers 23,500 BTU/h and lists 800 square feet. Features listed include a digital thermostat and auto-restart; accessories include exhaust kits, filters, flexible duct, and a condensate pump. It is not a normal 120-volt plug-in appliance. - Large work areas: HSC-36R. The listed 36,000 BTU/h capacity, 1,200-square-foot area, and 1,040 CFM airflow are aimed at larger commercial and industrial spaces. It requires 208–230 volts and a 30-amp breaker circuit; its listed 68 dBA noise level and roughly 38 × 29 × 57-inch size make it a poor default for quiet occupied rooms. See HSC-36R specifications.
- Maximum cooling in the standard HSC range: HSC-60R. This 60,000 BTU/h unit lists coverage up to 2,000 square feet and airflow of 1,850 CFM. At about 54 × 29 × 57 inches, it needs 208–230-volt service, a substantial circuit (listed up to 50 amps), and hardwired pigtail installation. It suits large industrial loads, not casual household cooling. See HSC-60R specifications.
- Cooling and heating: AHSC-18R. This heat-pump model lists 16,800 BTU/h for both cooling and heating, plus dehumidification. It weighs about 178 pounds, needs a 120-volt, 20-amp circuit, and was listed at $5,473.95—about $1,261 more than the HSC-18R. The premium makes sense when heating and seasonal use are valuable; it is harder to justify for summer-only cooling. See AHSC-18R specifications.
- Where hot-air exhaust is impractical: investigate water-cooled options. The HWC-19P may avoid a conventional hot-air exhaust route, but it needs a suitable water supply and drainage. One distributor listed it at $4,362.23 and sold out; confirm availability and plumbing requirements before treating it as an option. Check current availability.
Choose by heat load, not square footage alone
A listed coverage figure is a starting point, not a promise that a unit will hold a particular temperature. A well-insulated 600-square-foot office can have a very different load from a similarly sized workshop with machinery, open doors, high ceilings, or direct sun. Before selecting a model, account for:

- Ceiling height, insulation, windows, and direct solar exposure.
- Heat from people, computers, servers, machinery, lighting, and other equipment.
- Door openings, air leakage, loading docks, and whether the space is partly open.
- Whether the goal is to cool an entire room or deliver cold air to a workstation or equipment rack.
Airrex’s sizing information flags sun, poor insulation, heavy equipment, groups of people, servers, high ceilings, and open docks as conditions that can change the required capacity. If the load is substantial or a temperature limit is critical, get a professional load assessment rather than sizing by floor area alone. Review the distributor’s sizing guidance.
Air-cooled, heat-pump, and water-cooled are different choices
HSC air-cooled units reject heat through an exhaust arrangement. They are usually the simpler route when a duct can carry hot air outdoors or to an appropriate exhaust/return location. The HSC models are listed as shipping in a single-exhaust configuration, with optional return-air ducting available on relevant models.
Single-exhaust operation is convenient, but it can depressurize a tightly sealed room: air exhausted from the room must be replaced, potentially drawing hot, humid, or dusty air through gaps. In sealed spaces, ask whether return-air ducting or another balanced arrangement is appropriate. Duct length, bends, sealing, and placement also affect performance.
AHSC heat pumps provide heating as well as cooling. The AHSC-18R listing gives cooling operation from 61°F to 115°F ambient and heating operation from 46°F to 81°F. Match those listed limits and the heating capacity to the actual climate and load; a heat-pump label alone does not establish that it will meet every winter requirement.
HWC water-cooled units can help where hot-air exhaust is difficult, but shift the installation challenge to water supply and drainage. Confirm local operating requirements and stock before choosing one.

Electrical service is a purchase prerequisite
Check the exact model’s voltage, plug or hardwire arrangement, breaker requirement, and site circuit before buying. The HSC-12R and HSC-14R are listed at 120 volts; the HSC-18R requires a 20-amp circuit. HSC-24R and larger HSC units use 208–230 volts, with progressively larger circuit requirements. The HSC-60R is listed with a pigtail/hardwire setup and a circuit up to 50 amps.
Have a qualified electrician or HVAC professional confirm that the site has the right service and circuit. Do not assume an adapter, extension cord, or shared circuit is suitable; do not defeat a breaker. If a breaker trips, stop operation and have the circuit, voltage, and installation checked.

Installation checklist: exhaust, drainage, access, and filters
- Plan the exhaust route. Identify where hot air will go and whether a ceiling-tile kit or flexible duct is needed. Avoid a long, kinked, leaking, or obstructed run.
- Consider pressure balance. In a sealed room, ask whether optional return-air ducting would reduce negative pressure and unwanted infiltration.
- Plan condensate handling. Depending on model and conditions, water may collect in an internal tank or need a drain/pump. Determine how often a tank needs emptying, whether continuous drainage is possible, and whether a pump is needed to lift water. Protect the area against overflow or drain failure.
- Make room for the machine. “Portable” means relocatable, not lightweight: the HSC-18R is about 175 pounds and AHSC-18R about 178 pounds. Check door widths, ramps, stairs, floor access, turning space, and unloading equipment before delivery.
- Maintain airflow and filtration. Clean removable/washable filters as directed and avoid blocking intake or discharge. MERV 8 and HEPA H13 options are listed for some models; filtration is separate from cooling performance and does not by itself make a unit a medical-grade air purifier.
Accessories add to the real cost. Catalog examples include ceiling-tile kits around $195–$225, condensate pumps around $225–$300, a remote thermostat at $240, and some filters around $120–$160. When Airrex is—and is not—the right buy
Airrex is worth considering when the job calls for commercial spot cooling, higher capacity, ducting flexibility, or temporary cooling where permanent HVAC work is delayed or impractical. It is often a poor fit when the priority is low purchase price, quiet operation, easy room-to-room carrying, or simple household plug-in setup.
- For a bedroom, apartment, or home office: Compare a consumer dual-hose portable AC, which is generally more residentially oriented and less costly. Do not buy commercial capacity you do not need.
- For recurring use in a fixed room: A permanent mini-split may be a better long-term fit for quiet, fixed-location cooling, although it requires installation and is not relocatable.
- For a short event or emergency: Renting a spot cooler may avoid a large capital purchase and can suit temporary demand.
- For a whole building that is chronically hot: Repairing or upgrading central or rooftop HVAC may address the underlying problem more effectively than adding spot coolers.
Quick decision path
- Cooling a conventional household room occasionally? Start with consumer portable AC options; Airrex is likely excessive.
- Need commercial spot cooling and have suitable 120-volt service? Compare HSC-12R and HSC-18R against the actual load and circuit.
- Have 208–230-volt service and a larger load? Assess HSC-24R, HSC-36R, or HSC-60R, including electrical work and noise.
- Need heating as well as cooling? Compare the AHSC premium with the value of year-round use and check its operating limits.
- Cannot route hot exhaust? Investigate water-cooled equipment only after confirming water, drainage, and availability.
